Beyond the organisational boundaries: identifying external barriers to patient-centred healthcare knowledge sharing

    Get PDF
This paper reports on a secondary analysis of a previously completed case study that aimed to investigate knowledge sharing (KS) in Chinese hospitals. Specifically, the secondary analysis aims to identify, qualify and theorise external barriers that prevent and hinder patient-centred KS in healthcare organisations. The analysis revealed that healthcare KS is strongly influenced and hindered by five external barriers: social belief and preference, the influences of Chinese culture traits, healthcare education structure, political decisions, and economic environment and constraints. Moreover, the findings suggest that these external barriers cannot be overlooked in KS implementation and operation in healthcare organisations and should be carefully assessed beginning in the early stages of KS design and strategic planning. Based on the secondary analysis, this paper proposes a preliminary conceptual model that can be adopted as a theoretical basis for more focused investigations in future studies

‘Usul mikul’, ‘Ketiban sampur’, and the atrophy of innovation process

Idea sharing is one of the most common ways of developing innovation in organizations. Aspirations and suggestions for improvements are recognized, discussed, and executed through idea sharing. This study adopts an ethnographic approach and critically analyzes how idea sharing goes against the grain of organizational culture. Based on a study of a higher education institution in Java, Indonesia, the paper highlights usul mikul and ketiban sampur as two modes of cultural practice which, over time, penalize innovators in their efforts to initiate change and renewal. The results show that these practices are formative to organizational atrophy. They weaken organizational capability to innovate due to the disuse of members’ capabilities. Importantly, the study contributes to the growing literature on innovation management, organizational culture, and higher education management

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop a structural equation model to explain the complex relationship between social network and firm performance by introducing the mediating role of trust, selling capability and pricing capability. Design/methodology/approach – The research model with hypothesis development was derived based on the literature. To provide empirical evidence, this study carried out a survey in which the data were equated with a list of questionnaires with a random survey of 380 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Indonesian context. Findings – This study indicates that the use of social media in management process will not affect the increasing firm performance unless the firms build trust upon social networks. The social network with trust allows the firms to gain a pricing capability and a selling capability, which brings a positive impact on firm performance. The results also show that the selling and the pricing capabilities become essential following the utilizing the social media, which concerns on trust building. Research limitations/implications – This study focused on the small-to-medium context, which has conventionally provided an exemplary site for the development of social capital theory but raises issues of generalizability across different contexts. Practical implications – For the managers, it is advisable to encourage their employees to consciously exploit the selling capability by enhancing the business networks via social media to achieve the firm performance. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the social capital theory by explaining the mediating role of trust in the complex relationship between social network and firm performance. This study provides evidence that trust plays a pivotal role in social networks, which enable the observed firms to achieve the performance

This paper intends to examine the mediating effects of subjective norms on the relationship between career advancement and job characteristics and knowledge sharing behavior. Based on the social exchange theory, we establish a research model which contains job and organizational factors. We distributed 650 questionnaires, but only 439 questionnaires were returned and usable. The hypotheses were tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study examines knowledge sharing behavior and its determinants. The results reveal that career advancement, job characteristics and subjective norms are positively and significantly related to knowledge sharing behavior. The findings depict that subjective norms have a partial positive and significant mediating effect on knowledge sharing behavior. This paper intends to identify knowledge sharing behavior and its determinants in Tanzanian healthcare institutions and among healthcare professionals. This is because there are only a few such studies in the context of Tanzania; therefore, this study offers a theoretical foundation for future studies and practical implications for administrators and practitioners

This study examined the direct relationship between individual capabilities, career advancement, personal values, job characteristics, perceived organizational climate and knowledge- sharing behavior. The study also investigated the moderating effect of subjective norms on the relationship between individual capabilities, career advancement, personal values, job characteristics, perceived organizational climate and knowledge- sharing behavior. A total of 650 questionnaires were personally distributed to respondents from five Tanzanian public hospitals (Muhimbili National Hospital, Ligula Referral Hospital, Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Sekou Toure Reginal Hospital Mwanza and Mbeya Referral Hospital) after permission was granted by the hospital management. Out of the 650 questionnaires distributed, 476 questionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 73%. However, only 439 questionnaires were usable for final analysis. The hypotheses for direct and moderating effects were tested using Smart PLS. The findings of the PLS path model indicated that individual capabilities, career advancement, personal values, and perceived organizational climate are significantly and positively related to knowledge- sharing behavior. Regarding the subjective norms as a moderator in the relationship between exogenous latent variables and the endogenous latent variable, subjective norms were found to moderate the relationship between individual capabilities, job characteristics, perceived organizational climate and knowledge- sharing behavior. The research results reported in this study suggest the need to enhance individual capabilities, career advancement, personal values, and perceived organizational climate as a way of encouraging knowledge- sharing behavior among the healthcare professionals. Apart from that, the hospital management also needs to consider the role of subjective norms when planning to enhance healthcare professionals’ knowledge- sharing behavior, especially when involving individual capabilities, job characteristics and perceived organizational climate

Prediction and control of knowledge usage is useful for Human Resources Management due to its nature as a resource and link with human capital in organizations - especially those that rely on knowledge intensively. By following previous studies focused on identifying and measuring the impact of psychosocial factors as antecedents of knowledge sharing behavior (KSB), a mixed methods approach was used on a sample of 150 healthcare researchers to verify the link between perceptions of social network, shared goals, social trust and knowledge sharing behavior. Firstly, a quantitative approach was used to verify this link and the effects of moderation of knowledge sharing intention (KSI) on KBS. Secondly, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was used to identify alternative configurations that lead to KSI or its absence; KSB and its absence. Findings show evidences of the proposed antecedents of KSI and affecting the KSB. Alternative configurations are discussed regarding conditions that lead to the presence or absence of KSI and KSB (considering tacit and explicit knowledge apart).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
