    Natural computing for vehicular networks

    La presente tesis aborda el diseño inteligente de soluciones para el despliegue de redes vehiculares ad-hoc (vehicular ad hoc networks, VANETs). Estas son redes de comunicación inalámbrica formada principalmente por vehículos y elementos de infraestructura vial. Las VANETs ofrecen la oportunidad para desarrollar aplicaciones revolucionarias en el ámbito de la seguridad y eficiencia vial. Al ser un dominio tan novedoso, existe una serie de cuestiones abiertas, como el diseño de la infraestructura de estaciones base necesaria y el encaminamiento (routing) y difusión (broadcasting) de paquetes de datos, que todavía no han podido resolverse empleando estrategias clásicas. Es por tanto necesario crear y estudiar nuevas técnicas que permitan de forma eficiente, eficaz, robusta y flexible resolver dichos problemas. Este trabajo de tesis doctoral propone el uso de computación inspirada en la naturaleza o Computación Natural (CN) para tratar algunos de los problemas más importantes en el ámbito de las VANETs, porque representan una serie de algoritmos versátiles, flexibles y eficientes para resolver problemas complejos. Además de resolver los problemas VANET en los que nos enfocamos, se han realizado avances en el uso de estas técnicas para que traten estos problemas de forma más eficiente y eficaz. Por último, se han llevado a cabo pruebas reales de concepto empleando vehículos y dispositivos de comunicación reales en la ciudad de Málaga (España). La tesis se ha estructurado en cuatro grandes fases. En la primera fase, se han estudiado los principales fundamentos en los que se basa esta tesis. Para ello se hizo un estudio exhaustivo sobre las tecnologías que emplean las redes vehiculares, para así, identificar sus principales debilidades. A su vez, se ha profundizado en el análisis de la CN como herramienta eficiente para resolver problemas de optimización complejos, y de cómo utilizarla en la resolución de los problemas en VANETs. En la segunda fase, se han abordado cuatro problemas de optimización en redes vehiculares: la transferencia de archivos, el encaminamiento (routing) de paquetes, la difusión (broadcasting) de mensajes y el diseño de la infraestructura de estaciones base necesaria para desplegar redes vehiculares. Para la resolución de dichos problemas se han propuesto diferentes algoritmos CN que se clasifican en algoritmos evolutivos (evolutionary algorithms, EAs), métodos de inteligencia de enjambre (swarm intelligence, SI) y enfriamiento simulado (simulated annealing, SA). Los resultados obtenidos han proporcionado protocolos de han mejorado de forma significativa las comunicaciones en VANETs. En la tercera y última fase, se han realizado experimentos empleando vehículos reales circulando por las carreteras de Málaga y que se comunicaban entre sí. El principal objetivo de estas pruebas ha sido el validar las mejoras que presentan los protocolos que se han optimizado empleando CN. Los resultados obtenidos de las fases segunda y tercera confirman la hipótesis de trabajo, que la CN es una herramienta eficiente para tratar el diseño inteligente en redes vehiculares

    Improving the Routing Layer of Ad Hoc Networks Through Prediction Techniques

    Cada dia és més evident el paper clau que juguen la informàtica/computació mòbil i les tecnologies sense fils a les nostres activitats diàries. Estar sempre connectat, en qualsevol moment i lloc, és actualment més una necessitat que un luxe. Els escenaris de computació ubics creats en base a aquests avenços tecnològics, permeten a les persones proporcionar i consumir informació compartida. En aquests escenaris, les xarxes que donen suport a aquestes comunicacions són típicament sense fils i ad hoc. Les característiques dinàmiques i canviants de les xarxes ad hoc, fan que el treball realitzat per la capa d'enrutament tingui un gran impacte en el rendiment d'aquestes xarxes. És molt important que la capa d'enrutament reaccioni ràpidament als canvis que es produeixen, i fins i tot s'avanci als que es produiran en un futur proper, mitjançant l'aplicació de tècniques de predicció. Aquesta tesi investiga si les tècniques de predicció poden millorar la capa d'enrutament de les xarxes ad hoc. Com a primer pas en aquesta direcció, explorem la potencialitat d'una estratègia de Predictor-Basat-en-Història (HBP) per predir la Informació de Control Topològic (TCI) generada pels protocols d'enrutament. Demostrem que hi ha una gran oportunitat per predir TCI, i aquesta predicció pot centrar-se en un petit subconjunt de missatges. En base a les nostres troballes, implementem el predictor OLSR-HBP i l'avaluem respecte al protocol Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). OLSR-HBP aconsegueix disminucions importants de TCI (sobrecàrrega de senyalització), sense afectar el funcionament de la xarxa i necessita una quantitat de recursos petita i assequible. Finalment, en referència a l'impacte de la predicció en les dades d'enrutament tant de la informació de Qualitat d'Enllaç como de Ruta (o Extrem-a-Extrem), demostrem que l'Anàlisi de Sèries Temporals és un enfocament prometedor per predir amb precisió, tant la Qualitat d'Enllaç como la Qualitat d'Extrem a Extrem en Xarxes Comunitàries.Cada día es más evidente el papel clave que juegan la informática/computación móvil y las tecnologías inalámbricas en nuestras actividades diarias. En estos escenarios, las redes que dan soporte a estas comunicaciones son típicamente inalámbricas y ad hoc. Las características dinámicas y cambiantes de las redes ad hoc, hacen que el trabajo realizado por la capa de enrutamiento tenga un gran impacto en el rendimiento de estas redes. Es muy importante que la capa de enrutamiento reaccione rápidamente a los cambios que se producen, e incluso se adelante a los que sucederán en un futuro cercano, mediante la aplicación de técnicas de predicción. Esta tesis investiga si las técnicas de predicción pueden mejorar la capa de enrutamiento de las redes ad hoc. Como primer paso en esta dirección, exploramos la potencialidad de una estrategia de Predictor-Basado-en-Historia (HBP) para predecir la Información de Control Topológico (TCI) generada por los protocolos de enrutamiento. Finalmente, en referencia al impacto de la predicción en los datos de enrutamiento tanto de la información de Calidad de Enlace como de Ruta (o Extremo-a-Extremo), demostramos que el Análisis de Series Temporales es un enfoque prometedor para predecir con precisión, tanto la Calidad de Enlace como la Calidad de Extremo a Extremo en Redes Comunitarias.Everyday becomes more evident the key role that mobile computing and wireless technologies play in our daily activities. Being always connected, anytime, and anywhere is today more a necessity than a luxury. The ubiquitous computing scenarios created based on these technology advances allow people to provide and consume shared information. In these scenarios, the supporting communication networks are typically wireless and ad hoc. The dynamic and changing characteristics of the ad hoc networks, makes the work done by the routing layer to have a high impact on the performance of these networks. It is very important for the routing layer to quickly react to changes that happen, and even be advanced to what will happen in the near future, by applying prediction techniques. This thesis investigates whether prediction techniques can improve the routing layer of ad hoc networks. As a first step in this direction, in this thesis we explored the potentiality of a History-Based Predictor (HBP) strategy to predict the Topology Control Information (TCI) generated by routing protocols. We demonstrated that there is a high opportunity for predicting theTCI, and this prediction can be just focused on a small subset of messages. Based on our findings we implemented the OLSR-HBP predictor and evaluated it with regard to the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. OLSR History-Based Predictor (OLSR-HBP) achieved important decreases of TCI (signaling overhead), without disturbing the network operation, and requiring a small and affordable amount of resources. Finally, regarding the impact of Prediction on the routing data for both Link and Path (or End-to-End) Quality information, we demonstrated that Time-series analysis is a promising approach to accurately predict both Link and End-to-End Quality in Community Networks

    Ambient noise in wireless mesh networks: Evaluation and proposal of an adaptive algorithm to mitigate link removal

    [EN] Ambient noise is one of the major problems in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). It is responsible for adverse effects on communications such as packet dropping, which dramatically affects the behaviour of ad hoc routing protocols ,a key element of these networks. This issue is of prime importance for WMNs since the loss of communication links experienced by nodes may strongly increase the convergence time of the network. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of this problem makes it difficult to address with traditional techniques. The contribution of this paper goes in the direction of (i) exploring this problem by assessing the behaviour of three state-of-the-art routing protocols in the presence of ambient noise (OLSR, B.A.T.M.A.N and Babel) and (ii) improving the resilience capabilities of these protocols against ambient noise by proposing an algorithm for the link quality-based adaptive replication of packets, named LARK. The goal of LARK is to avoid the loss of communication links in the presence of high levels of ambient noise.     Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research.     Improving the Performance of Multi-Hop Wireless Networks by Selective Transmission Power Control

    In a multi-hop wireless network, connectivity is determined by the link that is established by the receiving signal strength computed by subtracting the path loss from the transmission power. Two path loss models are commonly used in research namely two-ray ground and shadow fading, which determine the receiving signal strength and affect the link quality. Link quality is one of the key factors that affect network performance. In general, network performance improves with better link quality in a wireless network. In this study, we measure the connectivity and performance in a shadow fading path loss model, and our observations shows that both are severely degraded in this path loss model. To improve network performance, we propose power control schemes utilizing link quality to identify the set of nodes required to adjust the transmission power in order to improve the network throughput in both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks.     Contribution to quality of user experience provision over wireless networks

    The widespread expansion of wireless networks has brought new attractive possibilities to end users. In addition to the mobility capabilities provided by unwired devices, it is worth remarking the easy configuration process that a user has to follow to gain connectivity through a wireless network. Furthermore, the increasing bandwidth provided by the IEEE 802.11 family has made possible accessing to high-demanding services such as multimedia communications. Multimedia traffic has unique characteristics that make it greatly vulnerable against network impairments, such as packet losses, delay, or jitter. Voice over IP (VoIP) communications, video-conference, video-streaming, etc., are examples of these high-demanding services that need to meet very strict requirements in order to be served with acceptable levels of quality. Accomplishing these tough requirements will become extremely important during the next years, taking into account that consumer video traffic will be the predominant traffic in the Internet during the next years. In wired systems, these requirements are achieved by using Quality of Service (QoS) techniques, such as Differentiated Services (DiffServ), traffic engineering, etc. However, employing these methodologies in wireless networks is not that simple as many other factors impact on the quality of the provided service, e.g., fading, interferences, etc. Focusing on the IEEE 802.11g standard, which is the most extended technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), it defines two different architecture schemes. On one hand, the infrastructure mode consists of a central point, which manages the network, assuming network controlling tasks such as IP assignment, routing, accessing security, etc. The rest of the nodes composing the network act as hosts, i.e., they send and receive traffic through the central point. On the other hand, the IEEE 802.11 ad-hoc configuration mode is less extended than the infrastructure one. Under this scheme, there is not a central point in the network, but all the nodes composing the network assume both host and router roles, which permits the quick deployment of a network without a pre-existent infrastructure. This type of networks, so called Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs), presents interesting characteristics for situations when the fast deployment of a communication system is needed, e.g., tactics networks, disaster events, or temporary networks. The benefits provided by MANETs are varied, including high mobility possibilities provided to the nodes, network coverage extension, or network reliability avoiding single points of failure. The dynamic nature of these networks makes the nodes to react to topology changes as fast as possible. Moreover, as aforementioned, the transmission of multimedia traffic entails real-time constraints, necessary to provide these services with acceptable levels of quality. For those reasons, efficient routing protocols are needed, capable of providing enough reliability to the network and with the minimum impact to the quality of the service flowing through the nodes. Regarding quality measurements, the current trend is estimating what the end user actually perceives when consuming the service. This paradigm is called Quality of user Experience (QoE) and differs from the traditional Quality of Service (QoS) approach in the human perspective given to quality estimations. In order to measure the subjective opinion that a user has about a given service, different approaches can be taken. The most accurate methodology is performing subjective tests in which a panel of human testers rates the quality of the service under evaluation. This approach returns a quality score, so-called Mean Opinion Score (MOS), for the considered service in a scale 1 - 5. This methodology presents several drawbacks such as its high expenses and the impossibility of performing tests at real time. For those reasons, several mathematical models have been presented in order to provide an estimation of the QoE (MOS) reached by different multimedia services In this thesis, the focus is on evaluating and understanding the multimedia-content transmission-process in wireless networks from a QoE perspective. To this end, firstly, the QoE paradigm is explored aiming at understanding how to evaluate the quality of a given multimedia service. Then, the influence of the impairments introduced by the wireless transmission channel on the multimedia communications is analyzed. Besides, the functioning of different WLAN schemes in order to test their suitability to support highly demanding traffic such as the multimedia transmission is evaluated. Finally, as the main contribution of this thesis, new mechanisms or strategies to improve the quality of multimedia services distributed over IEEE 802.11 networks are presented. Concretely, the distribution of multimedia services over ad-hoc networks is deeply studied. Thus, a novel opportunistic routing protocol, so-called JOKER (auto-adJustable Opportunistic acK/timEr-based Routing) is presented.     Self-Configuration and Self-Optimization Process in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Self-organization in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is an emergent research area, which is becoming important due to the increasing number of nodes in a network. Consequently, the manual configuration of nodes is either impossible or highly costly. So it is desirable for the nodes to be able to configure themselves. In this paper, we propose an alternative architecture for self-organization of WMN based on Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (OLSR) and the ad hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocols as well as using the technology of software agents. We argue that the proposed self-optimization and self-configuration modules increase the throughput of network, reduces delay transmission and network load, decreases the traffic of HELLO messages according to network’s scalability. By simulation analysis, we conclude that the self-optimization and self-configuration mechanisms can significantly improve the performance of OLSR and AODV protocols in comparison to the baseline protocols analyzed
