On green routing and scheduling problem
The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much
interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing
literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental
issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have
been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization

A rolling-horizon quadratic-programming approach to the signal control problem in large-scale congested urban road networks
The paper investigates the efficiency of a recently developed signal control methodology, which offers a computationally feasible technique for real-time network-wide signal control in large-scale urban traffic networks and is applicable also under congested traffic conditions. In this methodology, the traffic flow process is modeled by use of the store-and-forward modeling paradigm, and the problem of network-wide signal control (including all constraints) is formulated as a quadratic-programming problem that aims at minimizing and balancing the link queues so as to minimize the risk of queue spillback. For the application of the proposed methodology in real time, the corresponding optimization algorithm is embedded in a rolling-horizon (model-predictive) control scheme. The control strategyās efficiency and real-time feasibility is demonstrated and compared with the Linear-Quadratic approach taken by the signal control strategy TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control) as well as with optimized fixed-control settings via their simulation-based application to the road network of the city centre of Chania, Greece, under a number of different demand scenarios. The comparative evaluation is based on various criteria and tools including the recently proposed fundamental diagram for urban network traffic
Vision-Based Lane-Changing Behavior Detection Using Deep Residual Neural Network
Accurate lane localization and lane change detection are crucial in advanced
driver assistance systems and autonomous driving systems for safer and more
efficient trajectory planning. Conventional localization devices such as Global
Positioning System only provide road-level resolution for car navigation, which
is incompetent to assist in lane-level decision making. The state of art
technique for lane localization is to use Light Detection and Ranging sensors
to correct the global localization error and achieve centimeter-level accuracy,
but the real-time implementation and popularization for LiDAR is still limited
by its computational burden and current cost. As a cost-effective alternative,
vision-based lane change detection has been highly regarded for affordable
autonomous vehicles to support lane-level localization. A deep learning-based
computer vision system is developed to detect the lane change behavior using
the images captured by a front-view camera mounted on the vehicle and data from
the inertial measurement unit for highway driving. Testing results on
real-world driving data have shown that the proposed method is robust with
real-time working ability and could achieve around 87% lane change detection
accuracy. Compared to the average human reaction to visual stimuli, the
proposed computer vision system works 9 times faster, which makes it capable of
helping make life-saving decisions in time
The State-of-the-art of Coordinated Ramp Control with Mixed Traffic Conditions
Ramp metering, a traditional traffic control strategy for conventional
vehicles, has been widely deployed around the world since the 1960s. On the
other hand, the last decade has witnessed significant advances in connected and
automated vehicle (CAV) technology and its great potential for improving
safety, mobility and environmental sustainability. Therefore, a large amount of
research has been conducted on cooperative ramp merging for CAVs only. However,
it is expected that the phase of mixed traffic, namely the coexistence of both
human-driven vehicles and CAVs, would last for a long time. Since there is
little research on the system-wide ramp control with mixed traffic conditions,
the paper aims to close this gap by proposing an innovative system architecture
and reviewing the state-of-the-art studies on the key components of the
proposed system. These components include traffic state estimation, ramp
metering, driving behavior modeling, and coordination of CAVs. All reviewed
literature plot an extensive landscape for the proposed system-wide coordinated

Store-and-forward based methods for the signal control problem in large-scale congested urban road networks
The problem of designing network-wide traffic signal control strategies for large-scale congested urban road networks is considered. One known and two novel methodologies, all based on the store-and-forward modeling paradigm, are presented and compared. The known methodology is a linear multivariable feedback regulator derived through the formulation of a linear-quadratic optimal control problem. An alternative, novel methodology consists of an open-loop constrained quadratic optimal control problem, whose numerical solution is achieved via quadratic programming. Yet a different formulation leads to an open-loop constrained nonlinear optimal control problem, whose numerical solution is achieved by use of a feasible-direction algorithm. A preliminary simulation-based investigation of the signal control problem for a large-scale urban road network using these methodologies demonstrates the comparative efficiency and real-time feasibility of the developed signal control methods
Resilience Assignment Framework using System Dynamics and Fuzzy Logic.
This paper is concerned with the development of a conceptual framework that measures the resilience of the transport network under climate change related events. However, the conceptual framework could be adapted and quantified to suit each disruptionās unique impacts. The proposed resilience framework evaluates the changes in transport network performance in multi-stage processes; pre, during and after the disruption. The framework will be of use to decision makers in understanding the dynamic nature of resilience under various events. Furthermore, it could be used as an evaluation tool to gauge transport network performance and highlight weaknesses in the network.
In this paper, the system dynamics approach and fuzzy logic theory are integrated and employed to study three characteristics of network resilience. The proposed methodology has been selected to overcome two dominant problems in transport modelling, namely complexity and uncertainty. The system dynamics approach is intended to overcome the double counting effect of extreme events on various resilience characteristics because of its ability to model the feedback process and time delay. On the other hand, fuzzy logic is used to model the relationships among different variables that are difficult to express in numerical form such as redundancy and mobility
Microsimulation models incorporating both demand and supply dynamics
There has been rapid growth in interest in real-time transport strategies over the last decade, ranging from automated highway systems and responsive traffic signal control to incident management and driver information systems. The complexity of these strategies, in terms of the spatial and temporal interactions within the transport system, has led to a parallel growth in the application of traffic microsimulation models for the evaluation and design of such measures, as a remedy to the limitations faced by conventional static, macroscopic approaches. However, while this naturally addresses the immediate impacts of the measure, a difficulty that remains is the question of how the secondary impacts, specifically the effect on route and departure time choice of subsequent trips, may be handled in a consistent manner within a microsimulation framework.
The paper describes a modelling approach to road network traffic, in which the emphasis is on the integrated microsimulation of individual trip-makersā decisions and individual vehicle movements across the network. To achieve this it represents directly individual driversā choices and experiences as they evolve from day-to-day, combined with a detailed within-day traffic simulation model of the spaceātime trajectories of individual vehicles according to car-following and lane-changing rules and intersection regulations. It therefore models both day-to-day and within-day variability in both demand and supply conditions, and so, we believe, is particularly suited for the realistic modelling of real-time strategies such as those listed above. The full model specification is given, along with details of its algorithmic implementation. A number of representative numerical applications are presented, including: sensitivity studies of the impact of day-to-day variability; an application to the evaluation of alternative signal control policies; and the evaluation of the introduction of bus-only lanes in a sub-network of Leeds. Our experience demonstrates that this modelling framework is computationally feasible as a method for providing a fully internally consistent, microscopic, dynamic assignment, incorporating both within- and between-day demand and supply dynamic
"Last-Mile" preparation for a potential disaster
Extreme natural events, like e.g. tsunamis or earthquakes, regularly lead to catastrophes with dramatic consequences. In recent years natural disasters caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, destruction of infrastructure, disruption of economic activity and loss of billions of dollars worth of property and thus revealed considerable deficits hindering their effective management: Needs for stakeholders, decision-makers as well as for persons concerned include systematic risk identification and evaluation, a way to assess countermeasures, awareness raising and decision support systems to be employed before, during and after crisis situations. The overall goal of this study focuses on interdisciplinary integration of various scientific disciplines to contribute to a tsunami early warning information system. In comparison to most studies our focus is on high-end geometric and thematic analysis to meet the requirements of small-scale, heterogeneous and complex coastal urban systems. Data, methods and results from engineering, remote sensing and social sciences are interlinked and provide comprehensive information for disaster risk assessment, management and reduction. In detail, we combine inundation modeling, urban morphology analysis, population assessment, socio-economic analysis of the population and evacuation modeling. The interdisciplinary results eventually lead to recommendations for mitigation strategies in the fields of spatial planning or coping capacity
