    Cost Effective Routing Implementations for On-chip Networks

    Arquitecturas de múltiples núcleos como multiprocesadores (CMP) y soluciones multiprocesador para sistemas dentro del chip (MPSoCs) actuales se basan en la eficacia de las redes dentro del chip (NoC) para la comunicación entre los diversos núcleos. Un diseño eficiente de red dentro del chip debe ser escalable y al mismo tiempo obtener valores ajustados de área, latencia y consumo de energía. Para diseños de red dentro del chip de propósito general se suele usar topologías de malla 2D ya que se ajustan a la distribución del chip. Sin embargo, la aparición de nuevos retos debe ser abordada por los diseñadores. Una mayor probabilidad de defectos de fabricación, la necesidad de un uso optimizado de los recursos para aumentar el paralelismo a nivel de aplicación o la necesidad de técnicas eficaces de ahorro de energía, puede ocasionar patrones de irregularidad en las topologías. Además, el soporte para comunicación colectiva es una característica buscada para abordar con eficacia las necesidades de comunicación de los protocolos de coherencia de caché. En estas condiciones, un encaminamiento eficiente de los mensajes se convierte en un reto a superar. El objetivo de esta tesis es establecer las bases de una nueva arquitectura para encaminamiento distribuido basado en lógica que es capaz de adaptarse a cualquier topología irregular derivada de una estructura de malla 2D, proporcionando así una cobertura total para cualquier caso resultado de soportar los retos mencionados anteriormente. Para conseguirlo, en primer lugar, se parte desde una base, para luego analizar una evolución de varios mecanismos, y finalmente llegar a una implementación, que abarca varios módulos para alcanzar el objetivo mencionado anteriormente. De hecho, esta última implementación tiene por nombre eLBDR (effective Logic-Based Distributed Routing).     Energy-Aware Data Management on NUMA Architectures

    The ever-increasing need for more computing and data processing power demands for a continuous and rapid growth of power-hungry data center capacities all over the world. As a first study in 2008 revealed, energy consumption of such data centers is becoming a critical problem, since their power consumption is about to double every 5 years. However, a recently (2016) released follow-up study points out that this threatening trend was dramatically throttled within the past years, due to the increased energy efficiency actions taken by data center operators. Furthermore, the authors of the study emphasize that making and keeping data centers energy-efficient is a continuous task, because more and more computing power is demanded from the same or an even lower energy budget, and that this threatening energy consumption trend will resume as soon as energy efficiency research efforts and its market adoption are reduced. An important class of applications running in data centers are data management systems, which are a fundamental component of nearly every application stack. While those systems were traditionally designed as disk-based databases that are optimized for keeping disk accesses as low a possible, modern state-of-the-art database systems are main memory-centric and store the entire data pool in the main memory, which replaces the disk as main bottleneck. To scale up such in-memory database systems, non-uniform memory access (NUMA) hardware architectures are employed that face a decreased bandwidth and an increased latency when accessing remote memory compared to the local memory. In this thesis, we investigate energy awareness aspects of large scale-up NUMA systems in the context of in-memory data management systems. To do so, we pick up the idea of a fine-grained data-oriented architecture and improve the concept in a way that it keeps pace with increased absolute performance numbers of a pure in-memory DBMS and scales up on NUMA systems in the large scale. To achieve this goal, we design and build ERIS, the first scale-up in-memory data management system that is designed from scratch to implement a data-oriented architecture. With the help of the ERIS platform, we explore our novel core concept for energy awareness, which is Energy Awareness by Adaptivity. The concept describes that software and especially database systems have to quickly respond to environmental changes (i.e., workload changes) by adapting themselves to enter a state of low energy consumption. We present the hierarchically organized Energy-Control Loop (ECL), which is a reactive control loop and provides two concrete implementations of our Energy Awareness by Adaptivity concept, namely the hardware-centric Resource Adaptivity and the software-centric Storage Adaptivity. Finally, we will give an exhaustive evaluation regarding the scalability of ERIS as well as our adaptivity facilities

    Driving the Network-on-Chip Revolution to Remove the Interconnect Bottleneck in Nanoscale Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip

    The sustained demand for faster, more powerful chips has been met by the availability of chip manufacturing processes allowing for the integration of increasing numbers of computation units onto a single die. The resulting outcome, especially in the embedded domain, has often been called SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (SoC) or MULTI-PROCESSOR SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (MP-SoC). MPSoC design brings to the foreground a large number of challenges, one of the most prominent of which is the design of the chip interconnection. With a number of on-chip blocks presently ranging in the tens, and quickly approaching the hundreds, the novel issue of how to best provide on-chip communication resources is clearly felt. NETWORKS-ON-CHIPS (NoCs) are the most comprehensive and scalable answer to this design concern. By bringing large-scale networking concepts to the on-chip domain, they guarantee a structured answer to present and future communication requirements. The point-to-point connection and packet switching paradigms they involve are also of great help in minimizing wiring overhead and physical routing issues. However, as with any technology of recent inception, NoC design is still an evolving discipline. Several main areas of interest require deep investigation for NoCs to become viable solutions: • The design of the NoC architecture needs to strike the best tradeoff among performance, features and the tight area and power constraints of the onchip domain. • Simulation and verification infrastructure must be put in place to explore, validate and optimize the NoC performance. • NoCs offer a huge design space, thanks to their extreme customizability in terms of topology and architectural parameters. Design tools are needed to prune this space and pick the best solutions. • Even more so given their global, distributed nature, it is essential to evaluate the physical implementation of NoCs to evaluate their suitability for next-generation designs and their area and power costs. This dissertation performs a design space exploration of network-on-chip architectures, in order to point-out the trade-offs associated with the design of each individual network building blocks and with the design of network topology overall. The design space exploration is preceded by a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art interconnect fabrics with themselves and with early networkon- chip prototypes. The ultimate objective is to point out the key advantages that NoC realizations provide with respect to state-of-the-art communication infrastructures and to point out the challenges that lie ahead in order to make this new interconnect technology come true. Among these latter, technologyrelated challenges are emerging that call for dedicated design techniques at all levels of the design hierarchy. In particular, leakage power dissipation, containment of process variations and of their effects. The achievement of the above objectives was enabled by means of a NoC simulation environment for cycleaccurate modelling and simulation and by means of a back-end facility for the study of NoC physical implementation effects. Overall, all the results provided by this work have been validated on actual silicon layout

    Running deep learning applications on resource constrained devices

    The high accuracy of Deep Neural Networks (DNN) come at the expense of high computational cost and memory requirements. During inference, the data is often collected on the edge device which are resource-constrained. The existing solutions for edge deployment include i) executing the entire DNN on the edge (EDGE-ONLY), ii) sending the input from edge to cloud where the DNN is processed (CLOUD-ONLY), and iii) splitting the DNN to execute partially on the edge and partially on the cloud (SPLIT). The choice of deployment between EDGE-ONLY, CLOUD-ONLY and SPLIT is determined by several operating constraints such as device resources and network speed, and application constraints such as latency and accuracy. The EDGE-ONLY approach requires compact DNN with low compute and memory requirements. Thus, the emerging class of DNNs employ low-rank convolutions (LRCONVs) which reduce one or more dimensions compared to the spatial convolutions (CONV). Prior research in hardware accelerators has largely focused on CONVs. The LRCONVs such as depthwise and pointwise convolutions exhibit lower arithmetic intensity and lower data reuse. Thus, LRCONVs result in low hardware utilization and high latency. In our first work, we systematically explore the design space of Cross-layer dataflows to exploit data reuse across layers for emerging DNNs in EDGE-ONLY scenarios. We develop novel fine-grain cross-layer dataflows for LRCONVs that support partial loop dimension completion. Our tool, X-Layer decouples the nested loops in a pipeline and combines them to create a common outer dataflow and several inner dataflows. The CLOUD-ONLY approach can suffer from high latency due to the high transmission cost of large input data from the edge to the cloud. This could be a problem, especially for latency-critical applications. Thankfully, the SPLIT approach reduces latency compared to the CLOUD-ONLY approach. However, existing solutions only split the DNN in floating-point precision. Executing floating-point precision on the edge device can occupy large memory and reduce the potential options for SPLIT solutions. In our second work, we expand and explore the search space of SPLIT solutions by jointly applying mixed-precision post-training quantization and DNN graph split.     Un framework pour l'exécution efficace d'applications sur GPU et CPU+GPU

    Technological limitations faced by the semi-conductor manufacturers in the early 2000's restricted the increase in performance of the sequential computation units. Nowadays, the trend is to increase the number of processor cores per socket and to progressively use the GPU cards for highly parallel computations. Complexity of the recent architectures makes it difficult to statically predict the performance of a program. We describe a reliable and accurate parallel loop nests execution time prediction method on GPUs based on three stages: static code generation, offline profiling, and online prediction. In addition, we present two techniques to fully exploit the computing resources at disposal on a system. The first technique consists in jointly using CPU and GPU for executing a code. In order to achieve higher performance, it is mandatory to consider load balance, in particular by predicting execution time. The runtime uses the profiling results and the scheduler computes the execution times and adjusts the load distributed to the processors. The second technique, puts CPU and GPU in a competition: instances of the considered code are simultaneously executed on CPU and GPU. The winner of the competition notifies its completion to the other instance, implying the termination of the latter.Les verrous technologiques rencontrés par les fabricants de semi-conducteurs au début des années deux-mille ont abrogé la flambée des performances des unités de calculs séquentielles. La tendance actuelle est à la multiplication du nombre de cœurs de processeur par socket et à l'utilisation progressive des cartes GPU pour des calculs hautement parallèles. La complexité des architectures récentes rend difficile l'estimation statique des performances d'un programme. Nous décrivons une méthode fiable et précise de prédiction du temps d'exécution de nids de boucles parallèles sur GPU basée sur trois étapes : la génération de code, le profilage offline et la prédiction online. En outre, nous présentons deux techniques pour exploiter l'ensemble des ressources disponibles d'un système pour la performance. La première consiste en l'utilisation conjointe des CPUs et GPUs pour l'exécution d'un code. Afin de préserver les performances il est nécessaire de considérer la répartition de charge, notamment en prédisant les temps d'exécution. Le runtime utilise les résultats du profilage et un ordonnanceur calcule des temps d'exécution et ajuste la charge distribuée aux processeurs. La seconde technique présentée met le CPU et le GPU en compétition : des instances du code cible sont exécutées simultanément sur CPU et GPU. Le vainqueur de la compétition notifie sa complétion à l'autre instance, impliquant son arrêt
