Towards MANET-based Recommender Systems for Open Facilities
Nowadays, most recommender systems are based on a centralized architecture, which can cause crucial issues in terms of trust, privacy, dependability, and costs. In this paper, we propose a decentralized and distributed MANET-based (Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork) recommender system for open facilities. The system is based on mobile devices that collect sensor data about users locations to derive implicit ratings that are used for collaborative filtering recommendations. The mechanisms of deriving ratings and propagating them in a MANET network are discussed in detail. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate the suitability of the approach in terms of different performance metrics. © 2021, The Author(s)

Guide Me in Analysis: A Framework for Guidance Designers
Guidance is an emerging topic in the field of visual analytics. Guidance can support users in pursuing their analytical goals more efficiently and help in making the analysis successful. However, it is not clear how guidance approaches should be designed and what specific factors should be considered for effective support. In this paper, we approach this problem from the perspective of guidance designers. We present a framework comprising requirements and a set of specific phases designers should go through when designing guidance for visual analytics. We relate this process with a set of quality criteria we aim to support with our framework, that are necessary for obtaining a suitable and effective guidance solution. To demonstrate the practical usability of our methodology, we apply our framework to the design of guidance in three analysis scenarios and a design walk-through session. Moreover, we list the emerging challenges and report how the framework can be used to design guidance solutions that mitigate these issues
Exploring Student Check-In Behavior for Improved Point-of-Interest Prediction
With the availability of vast amounts of user visitation history on
location-based social networks (LBSN), the problem of Point-of-Interest (POI)
prediction has been extensively studied. However, much of the research has been
conducted solely on voluntary checkin datasets collected from social apps such
as Foursquare or Yelp. While these data contain rich information about
recreational activities (e.g., restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment),
information about more prosaic aspects of people's lives is sparse. This not
only limits our understanding of users' daily routines, but more importantly
the modeling assumptions developed based on characteristics of recreation-based
data may not be suitable for richer check-in data. In this work, we present an
analysis of education "check-in" data using WiFi access logs collected at
Purdue University. We propose a heterogeneous graph-based method to encode the
correlations between users, POIs, and activities, and then jointly learn
embeddings for the vertices. We evaluate our method compared to previous
state-of-the-art POI prediction methods, and show that the assumptions made by
previous methods significantly degrade performance on our data with dense(r)
activity signals. We also show how our learned embeddings could be used to
identify similar students (e.g., for friend suggestions).Comment: published in KDD'1

Empowering patients in self-management of parkinson's disease through cooperative ICT systems
The objective of this chapter is to demonstrate the technical feasibility and medical effectiveness of personalised services and care programmes for Parkinson's disease, based on the combination of mHealth applications, cooperative ICTs, cloud technologies and wearable integrated devices, which empower patients to manage their health and disease in cooperation with their formal and informal caregivers, and with professional medical staff across different care settings, such as hospital and home. The presented service revolves around the use of two wearable inertial sensors, i.e. SensFoot and SensHand, for measuring foot and hand performance in the MDS-UPDRS III motor exercises. The devices were tested in medical settings with eight patients, eight hyposmic subjects and eight healthy controls, and the results demonstrated that this approach allows quantitative metrics for objective evaluation to be measured, in order to identify pre-motor/pre-clinical diagnosis and to provide a complete service of tele-health with remote control provided by cloud technologies. © 2016, IGI Global. Information and communication technology solutions for outdoor navigation in dementia
INTRODUCTION:
Information and communication technology (ICT) is potentially mature enough to empower outdoor and social activities in dementia. However, actual ICT-based devices have limited functionality and impact, mainly limited to safety. What is an ideal operational framework to enhance this field to support outdoor and social activities?
METHODS:
Review of literature and cross-disciplinary expert discussion.
RESULTS:
A situation-aware ICT requires a flexible fine-tuning by stakeholders of system usability and complexity of function, and of user safety and autonomy. It should operate by artificial intelligence/machine learning and should reflect harmonized stakeholder values, social context, and user residual cognitive functions. ICT services should be proposed at the prodromal stage of dementia and should be carefully validated within the life space of users in terms of quality of life, social activities, and costs.
DISCUSSION:
The operational framework has the potential to produce ICT and services with high clinical impact but requires substantial investment
