    Network Traffic Control Design and Evaluation

    Recently, the term bufferbloat has been coined to indicate the uncontrolled growth of the network queueing time. A number of network traffic control strategies have been proposed to control network queueing delay. Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithms such as RED, CoDel and PIE have been proposed to drop packets before the network queues become full and to notify upper layers, e.g., transport protocols, about possible congestion status. Innovative packet schedulers such as FQ-CoDel, have been introduced to prioritize flows which do not build queues. Strategies to reduce device buffering, e.g., BQL, have been proposed to increase the effectiveness of packet schedulers. Network experimentation through simulators such as ns-3, one of the most used network simulators, allows the study of bufferbloat and to evaluate solutions in a controlled environment. In this work, we aligned the ns-3 queueing system to the Linux one, one of the most used networking stacks. We introduced in ns-3 a traffic control module modelled after the Linux one. Our design allowed the introduction in ns-3 of schedulers such as FQ-CoDel and of algorithms to dynamically size the buffers such as BQL. Also, we devised a new emulation methodology to overcome some limitations and increase the emulation fidelity. Then, by using the new emulation methodology, we validated the traffic control module with its AQM algorithms (RED, CoDel, FQ-CoDel and PIE). Our experiments prove the high fidelity of network emulation and the high accuracy of the traffic control module and AQM algorithms. Then, we show two proposals of design and evaluation of traffic control strategies by using ns-3. Firstly, we designed and evaluated a traffic control layer for the backlog management in 3GPP stacks. The approach improves significantly the flows performance in LTE networks. Secondly, we highlighted possible design flaws in rate based AQM algorithms and proposed an alternative flow control approach. The approach allows the improvement of the effectiveness of AQM algorithms. Our work will allow researchers to design and evaluate in a more accurate manner traffic control strategies through ns-3 based simulation and emulation and to evaluate the accuracy of other modules implemented in ns-3

    Automated Debugging Methodology for FPGA-based Systems

    Electronic devices make up a vital part of our lives. These are seen from mobiles, laptops, computers, home automation, etc. to name a few. The modern designs constitute billions of transistors. However, with this evolution, ensuring that the devices fulfill the designer’s expectation under variable conditions has also become a great challenge. This requires a lot of design time and effort. Whenever an error is encountered, the process is re-started. Hence, it is desired to minimize the number of spins required to achieve an error-free product, as each spin results in loss of time and effort. Software-based simulation systems present the main technique to ensure the verification of the design before fabrication. However, few design errors (bugs) are likely to escape the simulation process. Such bugs subsequently appear during the post-silicon phase. Finding such bugs is time-consuming due to inherent invisibility of the hardware. Instead of software simulation of the design in the pre-silicon phase, post-silicon techniques permit the designers to verify the functionality through the physical implementations of the design. The main benefit of the methodology is that the implemented design in the post-silicon phase runs many order-of-magnitude faster than its counterpart in pre-silicon. This allows the designers to validate their design more exhaustively. This thesis presents five main contributions to enable a fast and automated debugging solution for reconfigurable hardware. During the research work, we used an obstacle avoidance system for robotic vehicles as a use case to illustrate how to apply the proposed debugging solution in practical environments. The first contribution presents a debugging system capable of providing a lossless trace of debugging data which permits a cycle-accurate replay. This methodology ensures capturing permanent as well as intermittent errors in the implemented design. The contribution also describes a solution to enhance hardware observability. It is proposed to utilize processor-configurable concentration networks, employ debug data compression to transmit the data more efficiently, and partially reconfiguring the debugging system at run-time to save the time required for design re-compilation as well as preserve the timing closure. The second contribution presents a solution for communication-centric designs. Furthermore, solutions for designs with multi-clock domains are also discussed. The third contribution presents a priority-based signal selection methodology to identify the signals which can be more helpful during the debugging process. A connectivity generation tool is also presented which can map the identified signals to the debugging system. The fourth contribution presents an automated error detection solution which can help in capturing the permanent as well as intermittent errors without continuous monitoring of debugging data. The proposed solution works for designs even in the absence of golden reference. The fifth contribution proposes to use artificial intelligence for post-silicon debugging. We presented a novel idea of using a recurrent neural network for debugging when a golden reference is present for training the network. Furthermore, the idea was also extended to designs where golden reference is not present

    Automatic Configuration of Programmable Logic Controller Emulators

    Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which are used to control much of the world\u27s critical infrastructures, are highly vulnerable and exposed to the Internet. Many efforts have been undertaken to develop decoys, or honeypots, of these devices in order to characterize, attribute, or prevent attacks against Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks. Unfortunately, since ICS devices typically are proprietary and unique, one emulation solution for a particular vendor\u27s model will not likely work on other devices. Many previous efforts have manually developed ICS honeypots, but it is a very time intensive process. Thus, a scalable solution is needed in order to automatically configure PLC emulators. The ScriptGenE Framework presented in this thesis leverages several techniques used in reverse engineering protocols in order to automatically configure PLC emulators using network traces. The accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency of the ScriptGenE Framework is tested in three fully automated experiments

    Distributed Implementation of eXtended Reality Technologies over 5G Networks

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe revolution of Extended Reality (XR) has already started and is rapidly expanding as technology advances. Announcements such as Meta’s Metaverse have boosted the general interest in XR technologies, producing novel use cases. With the advent of the fifth generation of cellular networks (5G), XR technologies are expected to improve significantly by offloading heavy computational processes from the XR Head Mounted Display (HMD) to an edge server. XR offloading can rapidly boost XR technologies by considerably reducing the burden on the XR hardware, while improving the overall user experience by enabling smoother graphics and more realistic interactions. Overall, the combination of XR and 5G has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with technology and experience the world around us. However, XR offloading is a complex task that requires state-of-the-art tools and solutions, as well as an advanced wireless network that can meet the demanding throughput, latency, and reliability requirements of XR. The definition of these requirements strongly depends on the use case and particular XR offloading implementations. Therefore, it is crucial to perform a thorough Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) analysis to ensure a successful design of any XR offloading solution. Additionally, distributed XR implementations can be intrincated systems with multiple processes running on different devices or virtual instances. All these agents must be well-handled and synchronized to achieve XR real-time requirements and ensure the expected user experience, guaranteeing a low processing overhead. XR offloading requires a carefully designed architecture which complies with the required KPIs while efficiently synchronizing and handling multiple heterogeneous devices. Offloading XR has become an essential use case for 5G and beyond 5G technologies. However, testing distributed XR implementations requires access to advanced 5G deployments that are often unavailable to most XR application developers. Conversely, the development of 5G technologies requires constant feedback from potential applications and use cases. Unfortunately, most 5G providers, engineers, or researchers lack access to cutting-edge XR hardware or applications, which can hinder the fast implementation and improvement of 5G’s most advanced features. Both technology fields require ongoing input and continuous development from each other to fully realize their potential. As a result, XR and 5G researchers and developers must have access to the necessary tools and knowledge to ensure the rapid and satisfactory development of both technology fields. In this thesis, we focus on these challenges providing knowledge, tools and solutiond towards the implementation of advanced offloading technologies, opening the door to more immersive, comfortable and accessible XR technologies. Our contributions to the field of XR offloading include a detailed study and description of the necessary network throughput and latency KPIs for XR offloading, an architecture for low latency XR offloading and our full end to end XR offloading implementation ready for a commercial XR HMD. Besides, we also present a set of tools which can facilitate the joint development of 5G networks and XR offloading technologies: our 5G RAN real-time emulator and a multi-scenario XR IP traffic dataset. Firstly, in this thesis, we thoroughly examine and explain the KPIs that are required to achieve the expected Quality of Experience (QoE) and enhanced immersiveness in XR offloading solutions. Our analysis focuses on individual XR algorithms, rather than potential use cases. Additionally, we provide an initial description of feasible 5G deployments that could fulfill some of the proposed KPIs for different offloading scenarios. We also present our low latency muti-modal XR offloading architecture, which has already been tested on a commercial XR device and advanced 5G deployments, such as millimeter-wave (mmW) technologies. Besides, we describe our full endto- end complex XR offloading system which relies on our offloading architecture to provide low latency communication between a commercial XR device and a server running a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first successful XR offloading implementations for complex ML algorithms in a commercial device. With the goal of providing XR developers and researchers access to complex 5G deployments and accelerating the development of future XR technologies, we present FikoRE, our 5G RAN real-time emulator. FikoRE has been specifically designed not only to model the network with sufficient accuracy but also to support the emulation of a massive number of users and actual IP throughput. As FikoRE can handle actual IP traffic above 1 Gbps, it can directly be used to test distributed XR solutions. As we describe in the thesis, its emulation capabilities make FikoRE a potential candidate to become a reference testbed for distributed XR developers and researchers. Finally, we used our XR offloading tools to generate an XR IP traffic dataset which can accelerate the development of 5G technologies by providing a straightforward manner for testing novel 5G solutions using realistic XR data. This dataset is generated for two relevant XR offloading scenarios: split rendering, in which the rendering step is moved to an edge server, and heavy ML algorithm offloading. Besides, we derive the corresponding IP traffic models from the captured data, which can be used to generate realistic XR IP traffic.     dissertationA modern software system is a composition of parts that are themselves highly complex: operating systems, middleware, libraries, servers, and so on. In principle, compositionality of interfaces means that we can understand any given module independently of the internal workings of other parts. In practice, however, abstractions are leaky, and with every generation, modern software systems grow in complexity. Traditional ways of understanding failures, explaining anomalous executions, and analyzing performance are reaching their limits in the face of emergent behavior, unrepeatability, cross-component execution, software aging, and adversarial changes to the system at run time. Deterministic systems analysis has a potential to change the way we analyze and debug software systems. Recorded once, the execution of the system becomes an independent artifact, which can be analyzed offline. The availability of the complete system state, the guaranteed behavior of re-execution, and the absence of limitations on the run-time complexity of analysis collectively enable the deep, iterative, and automatic exploration of the dynamic properties of the system. This work creates a foundation for making deterministic replay a ubiquitous system analysis tool. It defines design and engineering principles for building fast and practical replay machines capable of capturing complete execution of the entire operating system with an overhead of several percents, on a realistic workload, and with minimal installation costs. To enable an intuitive interface of constructing replay analysis tools, this work implements a powerful virtual machine introspection layer that enables an analysis algorithm to be programmed against the state of the recorded system through familiar terms of source-level variable and type names. No entanto, a simulação só é eficiente quando utiliza ferramentas de modelagem que suportem a descrição do comportamento do sistema em um elevado nível de abstração. A escassez de plataformas virtuais de MPSoCs que integrem hardware e software escaláveis nos motivou a desenvolver o MPSoCBench, que consiste de um conjunto escalável de MPSoCs incluindo quatro modelos de processadores (PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC e ARM), organizado em plataformas com 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 e 64 núcleos, cross-compiladores, IPs, interconexões, 17 aplicações paralelas e estimativa de consumo de energia para os principais componentes (processadores, roteadores, memória principal e caches). Uma importante demanda em projetos MPSoC é atender às restrições de consumo de energia o mais cedo possível. Considerando que o desempenho do processador está diretamente relacionado ao consumo, há um crescente interesse em explorar o trade-off entre consumo de energia e desempenho, tendo em conta o domínio da aplicação alvo. Técnicas de escalabilidade dinâmica de freqüência e voltagem fundamentam-se em gerenciar o nível de tensão e frequência da CPU, permitindo que o sistema alcance apenas o desempenho suficiente para processar a carga de trabalho, reduzindo, consequentemente, o consumo de energia. Para explorar a eficiência energética e desempenho, foram adicionados recursos ao MPSoCBench, visando explorar escalabilidade dinâmica de voltaegem e frequência (DVFS) e foram validados três mecanismos com base na estimativa dinâmica de energia e taxa de uso de CPUAbstract: Recent design methodologies and tools aim at enhancing the design productivity by providing a software development platform before the definition of the final Multiprocessor System on Chip (MPSoC) architecture details. However, simulation can only be efficiently performed when using a modeling and simulation engine that supports system behavior description at a high abstraction level. The lack of MPSoC virtual platform prototyping integrating both scalable hardware and software in order to create and evaluate new methodologies and tools motivated us to develop the MPSoCBench, a scalable set of MPSoCs including four different ISAs (PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC, and ARM) organized in platforms with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 cores, cross-compilers, IPs, interconnections, 17 parallel version of software from well-known benchmarks, and power consumption estimation for main components (processors, routers, memory, and caches). An important demand in MPSoC designs is the addressing of energy consumption constraints as early as possible. Whereas processor performance comes with a high power cost, there is an increasing interest in exploring the trade-off between power and performance, taking into account the target application domain. Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling techniques adaptively scale the voltage and frequency levels of the CPU allowing it to reach just enough performance to process the system workload while meeting throughput constraints, and thereby, reducing the energy consumption.
