As one of the backbones of the economy, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) aim to grow and develop their businesses in order to build a national economy based on just economic democracy. In various countries, MSMEs play an important role in job creation, productivity and economic growth. For the sake of sustainability and competitive advantage in MSMEs in this industrial era 4.0, digital transformation needs to be implemented. This paper aims to study the ongoing digital transformation of MSMEs in order to gain a richer understanding of the drivers, processes and challenges of digital transformation. There are 40 recent studies on digital transformation in MSMEs from 2016 to 2020 in the form of systematic literature reviews. The results of the study conducted were that MSMEs had different factors, processes and challenges according to the characteristics of each SMEs. The results of the research are practically an informative indicator for policy makers, information service providers, researchers and SMEs to evaluate the elements of digital transformation that have been running on MSMEs. Keywords: Digital Transformation, SMEs, MSMEs

Digitalization of Work Systems—An Organizational Routines’ Perspective

    Get PDF
Digitalization is a hypernym that denotes the ground-shifting impact IT artifacts have on organizations. The term implicitly refers to core topics in Information Systems research, which now enfolds at increasing magnitude, speed, and reach. However, digitalization often lacks explicit references to domestic theories, concepts, and constructs in the Information Systems literature. Fundamental mechanisms that constitute digitalization as an interplay of organizations and information systems remain unexplored. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, based on extending extant theory on organizational routines, we propose four patterns that conceptualize digitalization mechanisms as an interplay of organizational routines and IT artifacts. Second, we demonstrate how more complex transformation trajectories of routines unfold, by concatenating our patterns to form transformation stories. On either level of abstraction, further research can build on the proposed patterns to theorize on how the interplay of IT artifacts and organizational routines constitutes the digitalization of work systems

Research and literature on servitization have expanded greatly in the past years. This study focuses on providing systematic literature review of the micro and macro factors of change in servitization to find solutions for companies to facilitate the change towards digital servitization. This systematic review classifies equally environmental and organizational qualities from the servitization research and is conducted from descriptive sample of 95 articles covering digital servitization and organizational change. The review results indicate that extensive investments required for digital servitization demand substantial growth of value creation and appropriation. Furthermore, the implementation of digitalization obliges to invest in additional capabilities and resources. There are also various micro and macro level factors that need to be acknowledged and taken into consideration as they may all affect the servitization change process in different ways. To facilitate the digital servitization change process, attention needs to be paid to value creation, planning and analysing, management, capabilities and resources, monitoring, network, and stakeholders with the additional factors concluded in this research. These findings have potential to provide beneficial insights both for the companies in the path of servitization and for the research community by providing a novel literature review with perceptive future research ideas of the field and beyond

Nowadays, the application of digital technologies by contemporarysociety and in organizations has become so frequent and expanded that it hasbeen characterized as a change process called digital transformation. The aim ofthis paper is to discuss the concepts and processes of digital transformation to beused as strategies in organizations, focusing on the use and application ofontologies in this context and on the current challenges of its application. In thisresearch, ontologies are treated as instruments for knowledge representation andorganization in different domains, in the context of Information Science. It wasused an exploratory research methodology with a qualitative approach, throughwhich was carried out the study of the scientific literature, the selection of theart state and the subjective analysis. The results indicated that ontologies allowto represent information in the transition process between the project and theproduct development, acting as the solution of semantic interoperabilityproblems. Ontologies are also useful in the process of constructing a company'sservices cloud, by representing the basic concepts, terminology and semantics ofa service-oriented architecture. Finally, it was concluded that ontologies areuseful in the companies’ processes of digital transformation and productdevelopment, because they make the acquired knowledge of a certain domainexplicit, allowing a clearer understanding of the integrated architecturalconcepts and providing additional mechanisms for knowledge inference.

Preselection of Electronic Services by Given Business Service Based on Measuring Semantic Heterogeneity within the Application Area of Logistics

    Get PDF
According to the service orientation design paradigm there are business (BS) and electronic services (ES). BS encapsulate business concerns. ES encapsulate computing systems, information systems and software applications. In environments with a high number of BS and ES the decision on which ES provides the most suitable support for a certain BS is not a trivial task. The objective of the thesis is to provide models, methods, and techniques for preselection of ES for a given BS. Preselection is about reducing the large amount of ES to a significant smaller amount under the consideration of a particular BS

Sustainability of systems interoperability in dynamic business networks

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de ComputadoresCollaborative networked environments emerged with the spread of the internet, contributing to overcome past communication barriers, and identifying interoperability as an essential property to support businesses development. When achieved seamlessly, efficiency is increased in the entire product life cycle support. However, due to the different sources of knowledge, models and semantics, enterprise organisations are experiencing difficulties exchanging critical information, even when they operate in the same business environments. To solve this issue, most of them try to attain interoperability by establishing peer-to-peer mappings with different business partners, or use neutral data and product standards as the core for information sharing, in optimized networks. In current industrial practice, the model mappings that regulate enterprise communications are only defined once, and most of them are hardcoded in the information systems. This solution has been effective and sufficient for static environments, where enterprise and product models are valid for decades. However, more and more enterprise systems are becoming dynamic, adapting and looking forward to meet further requirements; a trend that is causing new interoperability disturbances and efficiency reduction on existing partnerships. Enterprise Interoperability (EI) is a well established area of applied research, studying these problems, and proposing novel approaches and solutions. This PhD work contributes to that research considering enterprises as complex and adaptive systems, swayed to factors that are making interoperability difficult to sustain over time. The analysis of complexity as a neighbouring scientific domain, in which features of interoperability can be identified and evaluated as a benchmark for developing a new foundation of EI, is here proposed. This approach envisages at drawing concepts from complexity science to analyse dynamic enterprise networks and proposes a framework for sustaining systems interoperability, enabling different organisations to evolve at their own pace, answering the upcoming requirements but minimizing the negative impact these changes can have on their business environment
