    Evaluation of Cementitious Injection Grouts for the Stabilization of Holly Tower Support Rock, Hovenweep National Monument

    This thesis addresses the testing and evaluation of the use of a cementitious injection grout for the reattachment of detached slabbing on the sandstone support rock of Holly Tower at Hovenweep National Monument. This research follows on a previous condition assessment and diagnosis of the deterioration of the sandstone support rock and the effects of consolidation on the rock as the first step in a multi-phase conservation program. The extreme instability of the slabbing on the west side of the support rock requires remedial intervention that will retain and reattach the slab to the parent rock. Injection grouting was identified as a viable option for reattachment, requiring the development of an intensive testing regimen to determine the physical and mechanical properties of a commercial cementitious grout

    Väitekirja elektrooniline versioon ei sisalda publikatsiooneVirtuaalne riiete proovimine on üks põhilistest teenustest, mille pakkumine võib suurendada rõivapoodide edukust, sest tänu sellele lahendusele väheneb füüsilise töö vajadus proovimise faasis ning riiete proovimine muutub kasutaja jaoks mugavamaks. Samas pole enamikel varem välja pakutud masinnägemise ja graafika meetoditel õnnestunud inimkeha realistlik modelleerimine, eriti terve keha 3D modelleerimine, mis vajab suurt kogust andmeid ja palju arvutuslikku ressurssi. Varasemad katsed on ebaõnnestunud põhiliselt seetõttu, et ei ole suudetud korralikult arvesse võtta samaaegseid muutusi keha pinnal. Lisaks pole varasemad meetodid enamasti suutnud kujutiste liikumisi realistlikult reaalajas visualiseerida. Käesolev projekt kavatseb kõrvaldada eelmainitud puudused nii, et rahuldada virtuaalse proovikabiini vajadusi. Välja pakutud meetod seisneb nii kasutaja keha kui ka riiete skaneerimises, analüüsimises, modelleerimises, mõõtmete arvutamises, orientiiride paigutamises, mannekeenidelt võetud 3D visuaalsete andmete segmenteerimises ning riiete mudeli paigutamises ja visualiseerimises kasutaja kehal. Selle projekti käigus koguti visuaalseid andmeid kasutades 3D laserskannerit ja Kinecti optilist kaamerat ning koostati nendest andmebaas. Neid andmeid kasutati välja töötatud algoritmide testimiseks, mis peamiselt tegelevad riiete realistliku visuaalse kujutamisega inimkehal ja suuruse pakkumise süsteemi täiendamisega virtuaalse proovikabiini kontekstis.Virtual fitting constitutes a fundamental element of the developments expected to rise the commercial prosperity of online garment retailers to a new level, as it is expected to reduce the load of the manual labor and physical efforts required. Nevertheless, most of the previously proposed computer vision and graphics methods have failed to accurately and realistically model the human body, especially, when it comes to the 3D modeling of the whole human body. The failure is largely related to the huge data and calculations required, which in reality is caused mainly by inability to properly account for the simultaneous variations in the body surface. In addition, most of the foregoing techniques cannot render realistic movement representations in real-time. This project intends to overcome the aforementioned shortcomings so as to satisfy the requirements of a virtual fitting room. The proposed methodology consists in scanning and performing some specific analyses of both the user's body and the prospective garment to be virtually fitted, modeling, extracting measurements and assigning reference points on them, and segmenting the 3D visual data imported from the mannequins. Finally, superimposing, adopting and depicting the resulting garment model on the user's body. The project is intended to gather sufficient amounts of visual data using a 3D laser scanner and the Kinect optical camera, to manage it in form of a usable database, in order to experimentally implement the algorithms devised. The latter will provide a realistic visual representation of the garment on the body, and enhance the size-advisor system in the context of the virtual fitting room under study

    Speleogenesis of the “Buco dei Vinchi” inactive swallow hole (Monte Croara karst sub-area, Bologna, Italy), an outstanding example of antigravitative erosion (or “paragenesis”) in selenitic gypsum. An outline of the “post-antigravitative erosion”

    Inactive swallow hole Buco dei Vinchi developed along a plane dividing selenitic gypsum stratum and an underlying shale interlayer, mostly by antigravitative erosion and by post-antigravitative erosion. It formed through six speleogenetic phases starting from a phreatic phase followed by several antigravitative erosion (= paragenetic) and post-antigravitative erosion phases and vadose phase. During first antigravitative erosion phase, the phreatic protoconduits evolved into small antigravitative conduits with typical cross-section in shape of an inversed U or a bulb. At the end of this phase the small antigravitative conduits converged and merged together in successive stages to form ever-bigger conduits, until – at a certain point – most of them flowed into a single, much wider antigravitative conduit, which later evolved into a composite conduit. Wwe demonstrate that the subhorizontal flat ceilings are not a characteristic feature of the antigravitative passages tout court – as claimed by most authors –, but instead they evolved in caves during periods when the piezometric surface was tangent to the vault of the cave (post-antigravitative erosion phenomenon). Thus these flat ceilings are traces of ‘paleo-piezometric surfaces’; moreover these flat ceilings, being sub-horizontal originally, can provide important information on possible tectonic movements or breakdowns occurred after their formation. The possible ages of the karstic phenomena in the selenitic gypsum near Bologna are discussed. This paper points out that the Buco dei Vinchi and the Cava a Filo swallow holes, presently located in “topographic highs”, were very probably in “topographic lows” at the time of their hydrologic activity, and that this is evidence of a relief inversion started at least 127,000 years ago. Therefore the beginning of the first karstic phenomena in the Bologna karst area is much older than this date. It is explained why the absolute altimetrical lowering of the Monte Croara karst sub-area (with respect to the present sea level) should be of about – 0.39 mm/year

    The effectiveness of a selected aiming method in archery for use with cross-dominant subjects

    This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a selected aiming method in archery for use with cross-dominant subjects. The subjects consisted of nine sophomore and five graduate women students attending The University of North Carolina at Greensboro during the academic year 1965-66. On the basis of a selected test of handedness and the hole-in-card test of eye dominance, these subjects were classified as cross-dominant. Each subject had had at least one semester of archery instruction and was familiar with the basic techniques of shooting. Scores from the pre-test were ranked and paired and the subjects were divided into two groups. A coin was tossed to determine which group was experimental and which was control. The experimental group used the selected aiming method of closing the dominant eye, suggested by Falkenstine (22:27) and Edwards and Heath (18:61). An eye patch was placed over the eye to insure the maintenance of proper controls. Those in the control group used whatever visual aiming technique they wished. The Seven Steps of Shooting taught at Teela-Wooket National Archery Camp were utilized as the basis for instruction on archery form for both groups. Both groups shot thirty-two ends, or 192 arrows, over a six-week period, shooting once a week with no practice in between

    Landscape archaeology at the Doak House

    The Doak House Museum is housed in an impressive brick structure located on the campus of Tusculum College in Greene County, Tennessee. Built about 1829-30, this large two-story mansion was owned until the mid-1970s by descendents of the Samuel W. Doak family, the original occupants. Doak was a minister and pioneer educator in east Tennessee who, with his father, established Tusculum Academy (later College) in 1818 (Fuhrmann 1986:43). Samuel W. Doak built a second academy adjacent to his residence in 1835; oral tradition has it that this restored wooden building sits on its original limestone foundations (George Collins: personal communication) approximately 41 m south of the house. A restored springhouse about 60.5 m east of the academy building is the third extant structure associated with the antebellum Doak occupation; its construction date is unknown. The Tusculum College Department of Museum Program and Studies operates the Doak House Museum. Current plans by the College call for extensive modifications to the grounds surrounding the Doak House, including new parking lots, roadways, landscaping, and additional utilities. As part of the planning process, George Collins, the Department’s Director, felt it would be useful to have an archaeological survey undertaken prior to any alterations to the property. The goals of the survey were to identify historic fence lines, roadways, outbuildings, and other landscape elements on the property in order to avoid destroying significant archaeological resources and to guide future restoration efforts. Collins contacted the Jeffrey L. Brown Institute of Archaeology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and it was agreed that the UTC summer archaeological field school would be held at the site during the spring of 2003. Through outside grants and the support of Tusculum College, the Doak House Museum provided housing and a modest stipend for the field school students. Fieldwork occurred from May 7 through June 5, 2003, with a crew of eight students supervised by Dr. Nicholas Honerkamp, Director of the Institute of Archaeology. This 21-day project generated 15 pages of typed field notes, several plan view maps, over 300 digital field photos (including several dozen provided by the Doak House Museum), and 87 bags of artifacts. Cleaning, classification and analysis of the 8848 artifacts generated by this project occurred during June, July, and August at the UTC Institute of Archaeology laboratory under the direct supervision of the author. Report preparation was undertaken in August and September of 2003 and involved approximately 200 person-hours.
