Discourse and Silence in Martianus Capella’s De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii

The present paper analyzes Martianus Capella’s De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii from a generic point of view, departing from Systemic Functional Linguistics, in order to establish parody as its main feature, in consistence with its generic adscription to Menippean Satire. As a result, we expect to prove that Martianus is attacking discourse and discursive knowledge, and proposing silence as an alternative category for the characterization of transcendence and truth. This perspective intends to show De nuptiis as a Menippean Satire which subverts all values exposed along the work, turn ing thus into an anti-didactic text

La construcción discursiva del epitalamio: contrastes y oposiciones en De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae de Marciano Capela

En De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae (s. V d. C.), Marciano Capela propone un epitalamio alegórico por medio del cual el saber y la elocuencia —representados por Filología y Mercurio respectivamente— deben unirse en matrimonio. Nuestro trabajo estudia el Prólogo (1.1-2) de De nuptiis, en el que es posible leer un manifiesto programático aplicable a toda la obra. Esperamos reconocer así las estrategias discursivas por medio de las cuales Marciano construye De nuptiis y, a la vez, analizar el efecto desestabilizador que esta construcción imprime sobre la anunciada posibilidad de unión entre discurso y saber. In De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae (V A. D.) Martianus Capella proposes an allegorical epithalamium in which knowledge and eloquence —Philology and Mercury— are supposed to unite in marriage. Our paper focuses on the Prologue (1.1-2), which can be considered as a programmatic section applied to the whole work. We aim to recognize the discursive strategies Martianus employs to construct De nuptiis, and at the same time we expect to analyze the destabilizing effect this construction shows in the possibility of unification between discourse and knowledge

Towards a parody of knowledge in a latin neoplatonic author: Martianus capela’s de nuptiis mercurii et philologiae

La monumental obra de Marciano Capela, De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae, clausura la paideia clásica e inaugura la educación medieval. Es, sin duda, un eslabón fundamental en la transmisión del saber de la Antigüedad clásica, dada la cantidad de información de que nos provee, su carácter no demasiado técnico, y su organización por tratados que invita a leerlos de manera independiente. En este marco nuestro presente trabajo analiza fundamentalmente la parodia como recurso discursivo y constructivo en De nuptiis, y la forma en que afecta la presentación de las Artes Liberales, tanto a nivel del discurso como en su contenido referencial. Así, esperamos echar luz sobre el proyecto literario de Marciano, que en nuestra opinión es esencialmente desestabilizador y crítico con respecto a las posibilidades de aprehensión y transmisión del saberMartianus’ monumental work, De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae, concludes classical paideia and inaugurates medieval education. It is an essential link in the transmission of knowledge from Classical Antiquity to Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, considering the amount of information it provides and it non-technical character. The present paper analyses the resource of parody in Martianus’ work and how it affects the presentation of the Liberal Arts, both as discourses and in their referential content. Il prologo del de nuptis di Marziano Capella alla fabula nuziale (il matrimonio di Filologia e Mercurio) è costituito da una prima parte in versi, l'inno a Imeneo (un unicum nelle letteratura antica), cui segue una parte in prosa, un dialogo dal carattere metaletterario con il figlio omonimo, dedicatario dell'opera. I motivi elaborati, che richiamano Lucrezio e Porfirio, delineano il progetto culturale dell'opera: una difesa, e al tempo stesso una rifondazione, della tradizione culturale pagana, dove la filologia sia la scienza sotto la quale riunire il percorso formativo dell'encyclios paideia.The prologue of Martianus Capella's de nuptiis to the nuptial fabula (the marriage between Philologia and Mercurius) is constituted by a first part in verses, the hymn to Hymenaeus (an unicum in the ancient literature), followed by a second part in prose, a meta-literary dialogue with the homonym son, to which the work is dedicated. Innovaciones léxicas del dominio de la geometría en el "De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurio" de Marciano Capela

La geometría latina antigua ha sido transmitida por un grupo no muy nutrido de textos, entre los que destaca el de Marciano Cape- la. Probablemente la contribución más notable de su obra al desarrollo de la expresión de esta materia en latín fue la acuñación de términos por los procedimientos habituales en una disciplina de origen griego: el préstamo y el calco, pero con un substrato latino antiguo. En este artículo pretendemos estudiar los vocablos más significativos de este grupo, aplicando un método de análisis del léxico técnico, que tenga en cuenta las modalidades de uso y contextos en que se produce.Ancient Latin geometry has been transmitted by a not very large number of texts. Martianus Capella's text excels over these. The most outstanding contribution of his work to the development of expression of this subject in Latin was likely the coining of terms by usual procedures in a Greek-originated discipline: loan and calque, grounded on an ancient Latin layer.
