    An empirical evaluation of techniques for parallel simulation of message passing networks

    209 p.[EN]In the field of computer design, simulation is an essential tool to validate and evaluate architectural proposals. Conventional simulation techniques, designed for their use in sequential computers, are too slow if the system to simulate is large or complex. The aim of this work is to search for techniques to accelerate simulations exploiting the parallelism available in current, commercial multicomputers, and to use these techniques to study a model of a message router. This router has been designed to constitute the communication infrastructure of a (hypothetical) massively parallel computer. Three parallel simulation techniques have been considered: synchronous, asynchronous-conservative and asynchronous-optimistic. These algorithms have been implemented in three multicomputers: a transputer-based Supernode, an Intel Paragon and a network of workstations. The influence that factors such as the characteristics of the simulated models, the organization of the simulators and the characteristics of the target multicomputers have in the performance of the simulations has been measured and characterized. It is concluded that optimistic parallel simulation techniques are not suitable for the considered kind of models, although they may provide good performance in other environments. A network of workstations is not the right platform for our experiments, because the communication demands of the parallel simulators surpass the abilities of local area networks—the granularity is too fine. Synchronous and conservative parallel simulation techniques perform very well in the Supernode and in the Paragon, specially if the model to simulate is complex or large—precisely the worst case for traditional, sequential simulators. This way, studies previously considered as unrealizable, due to their exceedingly high computational cost, can be performed in reasonable times. Additionally, the spectrum of possibilities of using multicomputers can be broadened to execute more than numeric applications.[ES]En el ámbito del diseño de computadores, la simulación es una herramienta imprescindible para la validación y evaluación de cualquier propuesta arquitectónica. Las ténicas convencionales de simulación, diseñadas para su utilización en computadores secuenciales, son demasiado lentas si el sistema a simular es grande o complejo. El objetivo de esta tesis es buscar técnicas para acelerar estas simulaciones, aprovechando el paralelismo disponible en multicomputadores comerciales, y usar esas técnicas para el estudio de un modelo de encaminador de mensajes. Este encaminador está diseñado para formar infraestructura de comunicaciones de un hipotético computador masivamente paralelo. En este trabajo se consideran tres técnicas de simulación paralela: síncrona, asíncrona-conservadora y asíncrona-optimista. Estos algoritmos se han implementado en tres multicomputadores: un Supernode basado en Transputers, un Intel Paragon y una red de estaciones de trabajo. Se caracteriza la influencia que tienen en las prestaciones de los simuladores aspectos tales como los parámetros del modelo simulado, la organización del simulador y las características del multicomputador utilizado. Se concluye que las técnicas de simulación paralela optimista no resultan adecuadas para trabajar con el modelo considerado, aunque pueden ofrecer un buen rendimiento en otros entornos. La red de estaciones de trabajo no resulta una plataforma apropiada para estas simulaciones, ya que una red local no reúne condiciones para la ejecución de aplicaciones paralelas de grano fino. Las técnicas de simulación paralela síncrona y conservadora dan muy buenos resultados en el Supernode y en el Paragon, especialmente si el modelo a simular es complejo o grande—precisamente el peor caso para los algoritmos secuenciales. De esta forma, estudios previamente considerados inviables, por ser demasiado costosos computacionalmente, pueden realizarse en tiempos razonables.     Analysis of Performance-impacting Factors on Checkpointing Frameworks: The CPPC Case Study

Its performance and the factors that impact it are transparently and rigorously identified and assessed. The tests were performed on a public supercomputing infrastructure, using a large number of very different applications and showing excellent results in terms of performance and effort required for integration into user codes. Statistical analysis techniques have been used to better approximate the performance of the tool. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons with other rollback-recovery approaches to fault tolerance are also included. All these data and comparisons are then discussed in an effort to extract meaningful conclusions about the state-of-the-art and future research trends in the rollback-recovery field.Minsiterio de Ciencia e Innovación; TIN2010-1673

    High-performance computing for vision

    Vision is a challenging application for high-performance computing (HPC). Many vision tasks have stringent latency and throughput requirements. Further, the vision process has a heterogeneous computational profile. Low-level vision consists of structured computations, with regular data dependencies. The subsequent, higher level operations consist of symbolic computations with irregular data dependencies. Over the years, many approaches to high-speed vision have been pursued. VLSI hardware solutions such as ASIC's and digital signal processors (DSP's) have provided good processing speeds on structured low-level vision tasks. Special purpose systems for vision have also been designed. Currently, there is growing interest in using general purpose parallel systems for vision problems. These systems offer advantages of higher performance, sofavare programmability, generality, and architectural flexibility over the earlier approaches. The choice of low-cost commercial-off-theshelf (COTS) components as building blocks for these systems leads to easy upgradability and increased system life. The main focus of the paper is on effectively using the COTSbased general purpose parallel computing platforms to realize high-speed implementations of vision tasks. Due to the successful use of the COTS-based systems in a variety of high performance applications, it is attractive to consider their use for vision applications as well. However, the irregular data dependencies in vision tasks lead to large communication overheads in the HPC systems. At the University of Southern California, our research efforts have been directed toward designing scalable parallel algorithms for vision tasks on the HPC systems. In our approach, we use the message passing programming model to develop portable code. Our algorithms are specified using C and MPI. In this paper, we summarize our efforts, and illustrate our approach using several example vision tasks. To facilitate the analysis and development of scalable algorithms, a realistic computational model of the parallel system must be used. Several such models have been proposed in the literature. We use the General-purpose Distributed Memory (GDM) model which is a simple but realistic model of state-of-theart parallel machines. Using the GDM model, generic algorithmic techniques such as data remapping, overlapping of communication with computation, message packing, asynchronous execution, and communication scheduling are developed. Using these techniques, we have developed scalable algorithms for many vision tasks. For instance, a scalable algorithm for linear approximation has been developed using the asynchronous execution technique. Using this algorithm, linear feature extraction can be performed in 0.065 s on a 64 node SP-2 for a 512 × 512 image. A serial implementation takes 3.45 s for the same task. Similarly, the communication scheduling and decomposition techniques lead to a scalable algorithm for the line grouping task.     Compiler assisted chekpointing of message-passing applications in heterogeneous environments

    [Resumen] With the evolution of high performance computing towards heterogeneous, massively parallel systems, parallel applications have developed new checkpoint and restart necessities, Whether due to a failure in the execution or to a migration of the processes to different machines, checkpointing tools must be able to operate in heterogeneous environments. However, some of the data manipulated by a parallel application are not truly portable. Examples of these include opaque state (e.g. data structures for communications support) or diversity of interfaces for a single feature (e.g. communications, I/O). Directly manipulating the underlying ad-hoc representations renders checkpointing tools incapable of working on different environments. Portable checkpointers usually work around portability issues at the cost of transparency: the user must provide information such as what data needs to be stored, where to store it, or where to checkpoint. CPPC (ComPiler for Portable Checkpointing) is a checkpointing tool designed to feature both portability and transparency, while preserving the scalability of the executed applications. It is made up of a library and a compiler. The CPPC library contains routines for variable level checkpointing, using portable code and protocols. The CPPC compiler achieves transparency by relieving the user from time-consuming tasks, such as performing code analyses and adding instrumentation code

    Galley: A New Parallel File System for Parallel Applications

    Most current multiprocessor file systems are designed to use multiple disks in parallel, using the high aggregate bandwidth to meet the growing I/O requirements of parallel scientific applications. Most multiprocessor file systems provide applications with a conventional Unix-like interface, allowing the application to access those multiple disks transparently. This interface conceals the parallelism within the file system, increasing the ease of programmability, but making it difficult or impossible for sophisticated application and library programmers to use knowledge about their I/O to exploit that parallelism. In addition to providing an insufficient interface, most current multiprocessor file systems are optimized for a different workload than they are being asked to support. In this work we examine current multiprocessor file systems, as well as how those file systems are used by scientific applications. Contrary to the expectations of the designers of current parallel file systems, the workloads on those systems are dominated by requests to read and write small pieces of data. Furthermore, rather than being accessed sequentially and contiguously, as in uniprocessor and supercomputer workloads, files in multiprocessor file systems are accessed in regular, structured, but non-contiguous patterns. Based on our observations of multiprocessor workloads, we have designed Galley, a new parallel file system that is intended to efficiently support realistic scientific multiprocessor workloads. In this work, we introduce Galley and discuss its design and implementation. We describe Galley\u27s new three-dimensional file structure and discuss how that structure can be used by parallel applications to achieve higher performance. We introduce several new data-access interfaces, which allow applications to explicitly describe the regular access patterns we found to be common in parallel file system workloads. We show how these new interfaces allow parallel applications to achieve tremendous increases in I/O performance. Finally, we discuss how Galley\u27s new file structure and data-access interfaces can be useful in practice

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's HPCC program is part of a new Presidential initiative aimed at producing a 1000-fold increase in supercomputing speed and a 100-fold improvement in available communications capability by 1997. As more advanced technologies are developed under the HPCC program, they will be used to solve NASA's 'Grand Challenge' problems, which include improving the design and simulation of advanced aerospace vehicles, allowing people at remote locations to communicate more effectively and share information, increasing scientist's abilities to model the Earth's climate and forecast global environmental trends, and improving the development of advanced spacecraft. NASA's HPCC program is organized into three projects which are unique to the agency's mission: the Computational Aerosciences (CAS) project, the Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) project, and the Remote Exploration and Experimentation (REE) project. An additional project, the Basic Research and Human Resources (BRHR) project exists to promote long term research in computer science and engineering and to increase the pool of trained personnel in a variety of scientific disciplines. This document presents an overview of the objectives and organization of these projects as well as summaries of individual research and development programs within each project
