    Achievements and challenges in learning analytics in Spain: The view of SNOLA

    [EN] As in other research fields, the development of learning analytics is influenced by the networks of researchers that contribute to it. This paper describes one of such networks: the Spanish Network of Learning Analytics (SNOLA). The paper presents the research lines of the members of SNOLA, as well as the main challenges that learning analytics has to address in the next few years as perceived by these researchers. This analysis is based on SNOLA’s archival data and on a survey carried out to the current members of the network. Although this approach does not cover all the activity related to learning analytics in Spain, the results provide a representative overview of the current state of research related to learning analytics in this context. The paper describes these trends and the main challenges, among which we can point out the need to adopt an ethical commitment with data, to develop systems that respond to the requirements of the end users, and to reach a wider institutional impact.[ES] Tal y como ocurre en otros campos de investigación, el desarrollo de la analítica del aprendizaje está influido por las redes de investigadores que contribuyen al mismo. Este artículo describe una de estas redes: la Red Española de Analítica de Aprendizaje (SNOLA).     Use of interactive resources in a self-learning platform for Pre-A1 Beginner students: A qualitative analysis

    To explore the possibility of using different interactive resources through technology to help Generation Z Pre-A1 Beginner students develop self-learning skills when learning a foreign language.La presente investigación examina los factores que afectan a los estudiantes de la Generación Z, quienes son usuarios nativos de la tecnología, cuando utilizan tecnología como herramienta en su proceso de aprendizaje. Esta investigación se centró en cómo utilizar actividades de autoaprendizaje asistidas por tecnología para los estudiantes de la Generación Z de nivel principiante Pre A1. Se realizó una investigación cualitativa de Acción/Participación, que utilizó entrevistas y observaciones como herramientas de investigación. Se definieron dos preguntas de investigación (1) ¿Cómo ayudan los recursos interactivos a estudiantes principiantes Pre-A1-de la Generación Z a desarrollar habilidades de autoaprendizaje para aprender un idioma extranjero? (2) ¿Cuál es la percepción del profesor sobre el cambio de la dinámica de una clase para los estudiantes principiantes Pre-A1-de la Generación Z usando el método invertido (FLIP)? El investigador eligió una muestra inicial de 20 estudiantes, que cumplían con los criterios del rango de edad para la Gen-Z, utilizando una metodología no probabilística. Para recopilar datos, se realizaron dos entrevistas con el profesor y una entrevista con los estudiantes; también se realizó una observación de una clase. La investigación encontró cinco temas principales desde punto de vista del profesor y de los estudiantes: (1) la experiencia utilizando modelos de autoaprendizaje con tecnología, (2) preferencias y preparación de los participantes, (3) utilidad de la metodología y la tecnología de autoaprendizaje, (4) formación necesaria para el uso de la metodología de autoaprendizaje y herramientas tecnológicas, y (5) motivación para utilizar la metodología de autoaprendizaje y herramientas tecnológicas para el curso.     Learning networks and moodle use in online courses: a social network analysis study

    Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Ciências da Educação Especialidade em Tecnologias, Redes e Multimédia na Educação e FormaçãoThis research presents a case study on the interactions between the participants of the forums of four online undergraduate courses from the perspective of social network analysis (SNA). Due to lack of studies on social networks in online learning environments in higher education in Portugal we have choose a qualitative structural analysis to address this phenomenon. The context of this work was given by the new experiences in distance education (DE) that many institutions have been making. Those experiences are a function of the changes in educational paradigms and due to a wider adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) from schools as well as to the competitive market. Among the technologies adopted by universities are the Learning Management Systems (LMSs) that allow recording, storing and using large amounts of relational data about their users and that can be accessed through Webtracking. We have used this information to construct matrices that allowed the SNA. In order to deepen knowledge about the four online courses we were studying we have also collect data with questionnaires and interviews and we did a content analysis to the participations in the forums. The three main sources of data collection led us to three types of analysis: SNA, statistical analysis and content analysis. These types of analysis allowed, in turn, a three-dimensional study on the use of the LMS: 1) the relational dimension through the study of forums networks and patterns of interaction among participants in those networks, 2) the dimension relative to the process of teaching and learning through content analysis of the interviews; 3) and finally the dimension related to the participants' perceptions about the use of LMS for educational purposes and as a platform for creating social networks through the analysis of questionnaires.With the results obtained we carried out a comparative study between the four courses and tried to present a reflection on the Online Project of the University as well as possible causes that led to what was observed. We have finished with a proposal of a framework for studying the relational aspects of online learning networks aimed at possible future research in this area

    Active Methodologies for the Promotion of Mathematical Learning

    In recent years, the methodologies of teaching have been in a process of transition. Multiple active methodologies have proliferated, with the aim of changing the concept we have had of teaching so far. These advocate for a student who plays a leading role in the process of building learning, while the teacher acts as a figure who facilitates and glimpses the paths to learning. In order to be able to carry out this type of teaching in an optimal way, it is necessary for the teaching and research community to be correctly trained in its pedagogical principles and in the tools that boost its implementation. Among these principles and tools, it is of vital importance that information and communication technologies (ICT) be adequately handled. The use of active methodologies (project-based learning, problem-based learning, service learning, flipped classroom, mobile learning, etc.) or innovative pedagogical approaches (simulation, role-playing, gamification, etc.) promotes an improvement in the motivation of students as well as their skills. This aspect is especially important in the area of mathematics, whose contents are characterized by their abstraction, thus highlighting the need for its dynamization in classrooms of different educational stages

    Interoperability Gap Challenges for Learning Object Repositories & Learning Management Systems

    An interoperability gap exists between Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and Learning Object Repositories (LORs). Learning Objects (LOs) and the associated Learning Object Metadata (LOM) that is stored within LORs adhere to a variety of LOM standards. A common LOM standard found in LORs is the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) Content Aggregation Model (CAM). In contrast, LMSs are independent computer systems that manage and deliver course content to students via a web interface. This research addressed three important issues related to the interoperability gap: (a) a lack of a metadata standard that defined the format of how student assessment data should be communicated from LMSs to LORs, (b) a lack of an architectural standard for the movement of data from LMSs to LORs, and (c) a lack of middleware that facilitated the movement of the student assessment data from the LMSs to LORs. This research achieved the following objectives: (a) the SCORM CAM LOM standard was extended to facilitate the storage of student assessment data, (b) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) was identified as the best architecture to resolve the interoperability gap between LMSs and LORs, (c) a panel of Computer Information Systems (CIS) experts participated in a five-stage, web-based, anonymous Delphi process that approved and ranked 28 functional requirements for a proposed middleware application, and (d) the functional requirements were verified via the development of a prototype that transferred student assessment data from a LMSs into the LOM of LOs that are stored within a LOR. In conclusion, the research demonstrated that there are three acceptable approaches to extending the SCORM LOM standard: (a) new metadata elements, (b) new vocabulary values, and (c) the reference of an internal or external XML file using a location element. The main accomplishments of the research were the gathering of SOA functional requirements and the development of a prototype that provided an approach for the resolution of the interoperability gap that exists between LMSs and LORs

    Development of an e-portfolio social network using emerging web technologies

    Dissertação de mestrado em Informatics EngineeringDigital portfolios (also known as e-Portfolios) can be described as digital collections of artifacts, being both a product (a digital collection of artifacts) and a process (reflecting on those artifacts and what they represent). It is an extension of the traditional Curriculum Vitae, which tells the educational and professional milestones of someone, while the portfolio proves and qualifies them (e.g.: annually thousands of students finish a Master degree on Informatics, but only one has built Vue, Twitter or Facebook – the Portfolio goes beyond the CV milestones by specifying the person’s output throughout life and distinguishing them). e-Portfolios augment this by introducing new digital representations and workflows, exposed to a community, being both a product and a process. This approach can be useful for individual self-reflection, education or even job markets, where companies seek talented individuals, because it expands the traditional CV concept and empowers individual merit. There have been many studies, theories, and methodologies related with e-Portfolios, but transpositions to web applications have been unsuccessful, untuitive and too complex (in opposition to the CV format, which had success in various applications, for example LinkedIn). This project aims to study new approaches and develop an exploratory web/mobile application of this method ology, by exploring the potential of social networks to promote them, augmented by emergent web technologies. Its main output is the prototype of a new product (a social network of e-Portfolio) and its design decisions, with new theoretical approaches applied to web development. By the end of this project, we will have idealized a web infrastructure for interacting with networks of users, their skills, and communities seeking them. The approach to the development of this platform will be to integrate emerging technologies like WebAssembly and Rust in its development cycle and document our findings. At the end of this project, in addition to the prototype of a new product, we hope to have contributed to the State of the Art of Web Engineering and to be able to answer questions regarding new emerging web development ecosystems.Os portfólios digitais (também conhecidos como e-Portfolios) podem ser descritos como coleções digitais de artefatos, sendo tanto um produto (uma coleção digital de artefatos) quanto um processo (refletindo sobre esses artefatos e o que eles representam). É uma extensão do tradicional Curriculum Vitae, onde o primeiro conta os marcos educacionais e profissionais de alguém, enquanto que o segundo, o Portfólio, comprova-os e qualifica-os (e.g.: anualmente milhares de alunos concluem graduações em Informática, no entanto apenas um consebeu o Vue, o Twitter ou o Facebook - o Portfólio vai além dos indicadores quantitativos do CV, especificando e qualificando a produção da pessoa ao longo da vida e distinguindo-a). Os e-Portfolios expandem este conceito com a introdução de novas representações digitais e fluxos de trabalho, expostos a uma comunidade, sendo tanto um produto como um processo. Esta abordagem pode ser útil para a autorreflexão individual, educação ou mesmo mercados de trabalho, onde as empresas procuram indivíduos talentosos, porque expande o conceito tradicional de CV e potencializa o mérito individual. Existem muitos estudos, teorias e metodologias relacionadas com os e-Portfolios, mas as transposições para aplicações web têm sido mal sucedidas, pouco intuitivas e muito complexas (em oposição ao formato CV, que tem tido sucesso em várias aplicações, por exemplo no LinkedIn). Este projeto visa estudar novas abordagens neste domínio e desenvolver uma aplicação exploratória web/mobile que melhor exprima os e-Portfolios, explorando o potencial das redes sociais para os promover em conjunto com tecnologias web emergentes. As principais produções esperadadas deste trabalho são um protótipo de um novo produto (uma rede social de e-Portfolio) e documentar novas abordagens teóricas aplicadas ao desenvolvimento web. No final deste projeto, teremos idealizado uma infraestrutura web para interagir com redes de utilizadores, as suas competências e comunidades que os procurem. A abordagem ao desenvolvimento desta plataforma será integrar tecnologias emergentes como WebAssembly e Rust no seu ciclo de desenvolvimento e documentar as nossas descobertas e decisões. No final deste projeto, para além do protótipo de uma plataforma, esperamos ter contribuido para o Estado da Arte da Engenharia Web e responder a questões sobre novos ecossistemas emergentes de desenvolvimento web
