Application of a new multi-agent Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation methodology in ship design
In this paper, a multiple objective 'Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation' methodology (HCPSO) is proposed. This methodology is able to handle multiple objective optimisation problems in the area of ship design, where the simultaneous optimisation of several conflicting objectives is considered. The proposed method is a hybrid technique that merges the features of co-evolution and Nash equilibrium with a ε-disturbance technique to eliminate the stagnation. The method also offers a way to identify an efficient set of Pareto (conflicting) designs and to select a preferred solution amongst these designs. The combination of co-evolution approach and Nash-optima contributes to HCPSO by utilising faster search and evolution characteristics. The design search is performed within a multi-agent design framework to facilitate distributed synchronous cooperation. The most widely used test functions from the formal literature of multiple objectives optimisation are utilised to test the HCPSO. In addition, a real case study, the internal subdivision problem of a ROPAX vessel, is provided to exemplify the applicability of the developed method
Chaotic multi-objective optimization based design of fractional order PI{\lambda}D{\mu} controller in AVR system
In this paper, a fractional order (FO) PI{\lambda}D\mu controller is designed
to take care of various contradictory objective functions for an Automatic
Voltage Regulator (AVR) system. An improved evolutionary Non-dominated Sorting
Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II), which is augmented with a chaotic map for
greater effectiveness, is used for the multi-objective optimization problem.
The Pareto fronts showing the trade-off between different design criteria are
obtained for the PI{\lambda}D\mu and PID controller. A comparative analysis is
done with respect to the standard PID controller to demonstrate the merits and
demerits of the fractional order PI{\lambda}D\mu controller.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figure
Optimization of Battery Energy Storage to Improve Power System Oscillation Damping
A placement problem for multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units
is formulated towards power system transient voltage stability enhancement in
this paper. The problem is solved by the Cross-Entropy (CE) optimization
method. A simulation-based approach is adopted to incorporate higher-order
dynamics and nonlinearities of generators and loads. The objective is to
maximize the voltage stability index, which is setup based on certain
grid-codes. Formulations of the optimization problem are then discussed.
Finally, the proposed approach is implemented in MATLAB/DIgSILENT and tested on
the New England 39-Bus system. Results indicate that installing BESS units at
the optimized location can alleviate transient voltage instability issue
compared with the original system with no BESS. The CE placement algorithm is
also compared with the classic PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) method, and
its superiority is demonstrated in terms of a faster convergence rate with

Synthesis of Minimal Error Control Software
Software implementations of controllers for physical systems are at the core
of many embedded systems. The design of controllers uses the theory of
dynamical systems to construct a mathematical control law that ensures that the
controlled system has certain properties, such as asymptotic convergence to an
equilibrium point, while optimizing some performance criteria. However, owing
to quantization errors arising from the use of fixed-point arithmetic, the
implementation of this control law can only guarantee practical stability:
under the actions of the implementation, the trajectories of the controlled
system converge to a bounded set around the equilibrium point, and the size of
the bounded set is proportional to the error in the implementation. The problem
of verifying whether a controller implementation achieves practical stability
for a given bounded set has been studied before. In this paper, we change the
emphasis from verification to automatic synthesis. Using synthesis, the need
for formal verification can be considerably reduced thereby reducing the design
time as well as design cost of embedded control software.
We give a methodology and a tool to synthesize embedded control software that
is Pareto optimal w.r.t. both performance criteria and practical stability
regions. Our technique is a combination of static analysis to estimate
quantization errors for specific controller implementations and stochastic
local search over the space of possible controllers using particle swarm
optimization. The effectiveness of our technique is illustrated using examples
of various standard control systems: in most examples, we achieve controllers
with close LQR-LQG performance but with implementation errors, hence regions of
practical stability, several times as small.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
DIFFERENTIAL EVOLUTION FOR OPTIMIZATION OF PID GAIN IN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING CONTROL SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
PID controller of servo control system maintains the gap between Electrode and workpiece in Electrical Dis- charge Machining (EDM). Capability of the controller is significant since machining process is a stochastic phenomenon and physical behaviour of the discharge is unpredictable. Therefore, a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is designed and applied to an EDM servo actuator system in order to find suitable gain parameters. Simulation results verify the capabilities and effectiveness of the DE algorithm to search the best configuration of PID gain to maintain the electrode position.

A hybrid EKF and switching PSO algorithm for joint state and parameter estimation of lateral flow immunoassay models

The official published can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEIn this paper, a hybrid extended Kalman filter (EKF) and switching particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm is proposed for jointly estimating both the parameters and states of the lateral flow immunoassay model through available short time-series measurement. Our proposed method generalizes the well-known EKF algorithm by imposing physical constraints on the system states. Note that the state constraints are encountered very often in practice that give rise to considerable difficulties in system analysis and design. The main purpose of this paper is to handle the dynamic modeling problem with state constraints by combining the extended Kalman filtering and constrained optimization algorithms via the maximization probability method. More specifically, a recently developed SPSO algorithm is used to cope with the constrained optimization problem by converting it into an unconstrained optimization one through adding a penalty term to the objective function. The proposed algorithm is then employed to simultaneously identify the parameters and states of a lateral flow immunoassay model.
