Extending Scojo-PECT by migration based on application level checkpointing

In parallel computing, jobs have different runtimes and required computation resources. With runtimes correlated with resources, scheduling these jobs would be a packing problem getting the utilization and total execution time varies. Sometimes, resources are idle while jobs are preempted or have resource conflict with no chance to take use of them. This greatly wastes system resource at certain degree. Here we propose an approach which takes periodic checkpoints of running jobs with the chance to take advantage of migration to optimize our scheduler during long term scheduling. We improve our original Scojo-PECT preemptive scheduler which does not have checkpoint support before. We evaluate the gained execution time minus overhead of checkpointing/migration, to make comparison with original execution time

Power Analysis and Optimization Techniques for Energy Efficient Computer Systems

    Get PDF
Reducing power consumption has become a major challenge in the design and operation of to-day’s computer systems. This chapter describes different techniques addressing this challenge at different levels of system hardware, such as CPU, memory, and internal interconnection network, as well as at different levels of software components, such as compiler, operating system and user applications. These techniques can be broadly categorized into two types: Design time power analysis versus run-time dynamic power management. Mechanisms in the first category use ana-lytical energy models that are integrated into existing simulators to measure the system’s power consumption and thus help engineers to test power-conscious hardware and software during de-sign time. On the other hand, dynamic power management techniques are applied during run-time, and are used to monitor system workload and adapt the system’s behavior dynamically to save energy

Making intelligent systems team players: Case studies and design issues. Volume 1: Human-computer interaction design

Initial results are reported from a multi-year, interdisciplinary effort to provide guidance and assistance for designers of intelligent systems and their user interfaces. The objective is to achieve more effective human-computer interaction (HCI) for systems with real time fault management capabilities. Intelligent fault management systems within the NASA were evaluated for insight into the design of systems with complex HCI. Preliminary results include: (1) a description of real time fault management in aerospace domains; (2) recommendations and examples for improving intelligent systems design and user interface design; (3) identification of issues requiring further research; and (4) recommendations for a development methodology integrating HCI design into intelligent system design

A model-based approach for automatic recovery from memory leaks in enterprise applications

Large-scale distributed computing systems such as data centers are hosted on heterogeneous and networked servers that execute in a dynamic and uncertain operating environment, caused by factors such as time-varying user workload and various failures. Therefore, achieving stringent quality-of-service goals is a challenging task, requiring a comprehensive approach to performance control, fault diagnosis, and failure recovery. This work presents a model-based approach for fault management, which integrates limited lookahead control (LLC), diagnosis, and fault-tolerance concepts that: (1) enables systems to adapt to environment variations, (2) maintains the availability and reliability of the system, (3) facilitates system recovery from failures. We focused on memory leak errors in this thesis. A characterization function is designed to detect memory leaks. Then, a LLC is applied to enable the computing system to adapt efficiently to variations in the workload, and to enable the system recover from memory leaks and maintain functionality
