Shingles & Pneumococcal Vaccines: Recommendations for Older Adults
As the immune system tends to weaken over time, patients aged 50+ begin having increased risk for certain potentially preventable diseases, especially shingles and pneumonia. Although there are vaccinations to protect against these diseases, there are many significant barriers preventing patients from receiving the vaccines that they need, including potentially confusing guidelines, concerns over risks, and recent changes to vaccine recommendations. This project aims to produce a clear and concise educational brochure to help overcome some of these barriers, and to drive patient-provider conversation about their vaccine recommendations.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1463/thumbnail.jp
Modifying the New York State Public School Financing Formula After \u3ci\u3eLevittown\u3ci\u3e
Spending on public education is primarily an obligation of state legislature and local school districts in the United States. Legislatures determine not only the amount of education spending, but also how much money is to be given to specific school districts. As a result, there have been growing discrepancies over how much financial assistance one district will have over another, leaving children from poor and fiscally overburdened districts at a disadvantage. This Note focuses on the New York case, Levittown v. Nyquist, as well as the New York funding formula, and ultimately recommends adoption of a school finance system that guarantees each school district sufficient funds to match the current average of state spending per pupil
Investigating the Role of FGF8 Signaling in Neurogenesis of the Developing Zebrafish Eye
In the embryonic zebrafish, the fibroblast growth factor 8a (FGF8) signaling network is essential for proper development and maintenance of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) as well as the hyaloid vasculature, the vessels that supply the eye with nutrients during development. Disruption of FGF8 signaling via knock down of FGF8 or pharmacologic inhibition of FGF receptors (FGFRs) results in extensive abnormalities throughout the developing eye. Our preliminary data indicated that in developing zebrafish, mRNA expression of fgf8a is present exclusively in the RGCs, while the fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (fgfr1b) is expressed exclusively in the area of the hyaloid vasculature. These results led us to hypothesize that FGF8 signals from the RGCs to the vasculature of the developing eye, and that this signaling network is essential for proper eye development. In order to test this hypothesis, we demonstrated the ability to detect downstream phosphorylation events in response to acute FGF8 stimulation in cells that expressed FGFR1 using Western blot and immunofluorescence (IF). Next, we established a zebrafish eye explant culture system to treat the cells of the developing zebrafish eye in vitro. Using transgenic zebrafish lines expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) tags in either the differentiating RGCs or the vascular cells of the eye, we attempted to identify the specific cells capable of responding to FGF8. Our data indicate that recombinant FGF8 is capable of activating detectable intracellular signaling cascades, such as ERK phosphorylation, in cultured endothelial cells. Furthermore, FGF8 is capable of inducing signaling in some of the cells from the developing zebrafish eye, but not in the RGCs. These findings support our proposed model in which FGF8 signals from the RGCs to the hyaloid vasculature, resulting in the activation of signaling pathways that are necessary for proper development of the hyaloid vasculature and RGCs
Modes of Interaction Between Divorced Parents
It is not unusual for researchers as well as laypersons to refer to the behaviour of non-custidial parents who comply with legally-determined child support obligations as "cooperative", event though this term would not typically be appropirate from the perspective of formal models of expenditures on public goods [the children in this case]. We develop a model in which compliance with child support orders is ynonymous with cooperative behaviour.DIVORCE ; CHILDREN ; PARENTS
Labor Market Search and Schooling Investment
We generalize the standard search, matching, and bargaining framework to allow individuals to acquire productivity-enhancing schooling prior to labor market entry. As is well-known, search frictions and weakness in bargaining position contribute to under-investment from an efficiency perspective. In order to evaluate the sensitivity of schooling investments to "hold up," the model is estimated using Current Population Survey data. We focus on the impact of bargaining power on schooling investment, and find that the effects are large. A brief exploration of the two-sided investment model suggests that something akin to a "Hosios condition" result regarding the socially optimal surplus division rule may be attainable.Labor market search; schooling choice; hold-up; Nash bargaining
Present status and future prospects for NASA's program in geodynamics
An overview of NASA's involvement in developing systems for precise determination of polar motion, earth rotation, and position on the earth's surface is given. The observational methods discussed are laser ranging to the moon and to artificial satellites, and very long baseline microwave interferometry. A plan for a geodynamics program to apply space technology to research in earth dynamics is outlined
Returns to Mobility in the Transition to a Market Economy
In spite of ongoing dramatic changes in labor market structure, transitional economies display rather low worker flows across sectors and occupations. Such low mobility can be explained by low returns to job changes as well as by market segmentation in the allocation of job offers. We develop an econometric model which enables us to characterize intertemporal changes in probabilities of dismissal, remuneration, and offer arrival rates on the basis of information on observed transitions and wage payments. The model is estimated using data from the Polish Labor Force Survey. Our results indicate a significant degree of segmentation in the allocation of job offers and more stability in public sector versus private sector jobs. Our model can also be used for policy experiments. In particular, we infer that reductions of 10 per cent in the generosity of unemployment benefits will not significantly boost outflows from the unemployment state. These findings support explanations for low mobility in transitional economies, which are based on informational failures, and high costs of moving from public to private enterprises for those with high levels of job tenure and labor market experience in the public sector.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39604/2/wp217.pd
Wall-thickness changes predicted in hollow-drawn tubing
Hollow-tube drawing or tube sinking theory is based on the concept of continuous distribution of dislocations. Material composition, parameter influence, and die-angle are determining factors in derivation of the theoretical model
