Broadside Love: A Comparison of Reading with Digital Tools versus Deep Knowledge in the Ballads of Samuel Pepys

    Get PDF
This essay explores the ways in which one portion of the ballads, those having to do with Love Pleasant (a category Pepys created and which was the largest in his collection), deal with the notion of love as typified in cheap print. This comparative analysis is done through the use of digital tools and slow/deep reading. I explore what digital textual analysis brings to the table when dealing with a large, but pre-selected, dataset in which the elements should share many common elements; how false data can be identified and winnowed out if one is just beginning work on broadside ballads; and, finally, what is the best way to interleave digital tools with slow reading

Kardiomiopatia połogowa — wciąż niepoznana. Aktualny stan wiedzy

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is defined as idiopathic cardiomyopathy which occurs at the end of pregnancy or in the first few months after delivery, with symptoms of heart failure (HF) secondary to left ventricular dysfunction, and at the same time no other cause for this condition. The pathomechanism of the disease has not yet been fully understood, but it is probably based on the interaction of complex factors. The clinical course of PPCM varies from life-threatening acute heart failure to mild symptoms mimicking the symptoms typical of the perinatal period. In Europe, PPCM is a rare disease but there are areas of the world where it occurs in one in every 300 cases. The treatment of PPCM is similar to that of HF with reduced ejection fraction. However, it is important to exclude drugs with teratogenic effects during pregnancy. The inclusion of bromocriptine in PPCM therapy seems to be justified, and in some cases improves the prognosis.

Speculative sequential consistency with little custom storage

This paper proposes SC++lite, a sequentially consistent system that relaxes memory order speculatively to bridge the performance gap among memory consistency models. Prior proposals to speculatively relax memory order require large custom on-chip storage to maintain a history of speculative processor and memory state while memory order is relaxed. SC++lite uses the memory hierarchy to store the speculative history, providing a scalable path for speculative SC systems across a wide range of applications and system latencies. We use cycle-accurate simulation of shared-memory multiprocessors to show that SC++lite can fully relax memory order while virtually obviating the need for custom on-chip storage. Moreover while demand for storage increases significantly with larger memory latencies, SC++lite's ability to relax memory order remains insensitive to memory latency. An SC++lite system can improve performance over a base SC system by 28% with only 2 KB of custom storage in a system with 16 processors. In contrast, speculative SC systems with custom storage require 51 KB of storage to improve performance by 31% over a base SC syste

    Accessing 3D Data

The issue of access and discoverability is not simply a matter of permissions and availability. To identify, locate, retrieve, and reuse 3D materials requires consideration of a multiplicity of content types, as well as community and financial investment to resolve challenges related to usability, interoperability, sustainability, and equity. This chapter will cover modes, audiences, assets and decision points, technology requirements, and limitations impacting access, as well as providing recommendations for next steps

    Store-Ordered Streaming of Shared Memory

Coherence misses in shared-memory multiprocessors account for a substantial fraction of execution time in many important scientific and commercial workloads. Memory streaming provides a promising solution to the coherence miss bottleneck because it improves memory level parallelism and lookahead while using on-chip resources efficiently. We observe that the order in which shared data are consumed by one processor is correlated to the order in which they were produced by another. We investigate this phenomenon and demonstrate that it can be exploited to send Store- ORDered Streams (SORDS) of shared data from producers to consumers, thereby eliminating coherent read misses. Using a trace-driven analysis of all user and OS memory references in a cache-coherent distributed shared- memory multiprocessor, we show that SORDS based memory streaming can eliminate between 36% and 100% of all coherent read misses in scientific workloads and between 23% and 48%in online transaction processing workloads
