    Enhanced online programming for industrial robots

    The use of robots and automation levels in the industrial sector is expected to grow, and is driven by the on-going need for lower costs and enhanced productivity. The manufacturing industry continues to seek ways of realizing enhanced production, and the programming of articulated production robots has been identified as a major area for improvement. However, realizing this automation level increase requires capable programming and control technologies. Many industries employ offline-programming which operates within a manually controlled and specific work environment. This is especially true within the high-volume automotive industry, particularly in high-speed assembly and component handling. For small-batch manufacturing and small to medium-sized enterprises, online programming continues to play an important role, but the complexity of programming remains a major obstacle for automation using industrial robots. Scenarios that rely on manual data input based on real world obstructions require that entire production systems cease for significant time periods while data is being manipulated, leading to financial losses. The application of simulation tools generate discrete portions of the total robot trajectories, while requiring manual inputs to link paths associated with different activities. Human input is also required to correct inaccuracies and errors resulting from unknowns and falsehoods in the environment. This study developed a new supported online robot programming approach, which is implemented as a robot control program. By applying online and offline programming in addition to appropriate manual robot control techniques, disadvantages such as manual pre-processing times and production downtimes have been either reduced or completely eliminated. The industrial requirements were evaluated considering modern manufacturing aspects. A cell-based Voronoi generation algorithm within a probabilistic world model has been introduced, together with a trajectory planner and an appropriate human machine interface. The robot programs so achieved are comparable to manually programmed robot programs and the results for a Mitsubishi RV-2AJ five-axis industrial robot are presented. Automated workspace analysis techniques and trajectory smoothing are used to accomplish this. The new robot control program considers the working production environment as a single and complete workspace. Non-productive time is required, but unlike previously reported approaches, this is achieved automatically and in a timely manner. As such, the actual cell-learning time is minimal

    Planning Hybrid Driving-Stepping Locomotion on Multiple Levels of Abstraction

    Navigating in search and rescue environments is challenging, since a variety of terrains has to be considered. Hybrid driving-stepping locomotion, as provided by our robot Momaro, is a promising approach. Similar to other locomotion methods, it incorporates many degrees of freedom---offering high flexibility but making planning computationally expensive for larger environments. We propose a navigation planning method, which unifies different levels of representation in a single planner. In the vicinity of the robot, it provides plans with a fine resolution and a high robot state dimensionality. With increasing distance from the robot, plans become coarser and the robot state dimensionality decreases. We compensate this loss of information by enriching coarser representations with additional semantics.     Path planning algorithms for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot in unstructured environments

    openPath planning is a crucial aspect of autonomous robot navigation, enabling robots to efficiently and safely navigate through complex environments. This thesis focuses on autonomous navigation for robots in dynamic and uncertain environments. In particular, the project aims to analyze the localization and path planning problems. A fundamental review of the existing literature on path planning algorithms has been carried on. Various factors affecting path planning, such as sensor data fusion, map representation, and motion constraints, are also analyzed. Thanks to the collaboration with E80 Group S.p.A., the project has been developed using ROS (Robot Operating System) on a Clearpath Dingo-O, an indoor mobile robot. To address the challenges posed by unstructured and dynamic environments, ROS follows a combined approach of using a global planner and a local planner. The global planner generates a high-level path, considering the overall environment, while the local planner handles real-time adjustments to avoid moving obstacles and optimize the trajectory. This thesis describes the role of the global planner in a ROS-framework. Performance benchmarking of traditional algorithms like Dijkstra and A*, as well as other techniques, is fundamental in order to understand the limits of these methods. In the end, the Hybrid A* algorithm is introduced as a promising approach for addressing the issues of unstructured environments for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot. The core concepts and implementation details of the algorithm are discussed, emphasizing its ability to efficiently explore continuous state spaces and generate drivable paths.The effectiveness of the proposed path planning algorithms is evaluated through extensive simulations and real-world experiments using the mobile platform.     Physically-based sampling for motion planning

    Motion planning is a fundamental problem with applications in a wide variety of areas including robotics, computer graphics, animation, virtual prototyping, medical simulations, industrial simulations, and trac planning. Despite being an active area of research for nearly four decades, prior motion planning algorithms are unable to provide adequate solutions that satisfy the constraints that arise in these applications. We present a novel approach based on physics-based sampling for motion planning that can compute collision-free paths while also satisfying many physical constraints. Our planning algorithms use constrained simulation to generate samples which are biased in the direction of the nal goal positions of the agent or agents. The underlying simulation core implicitly incorporates kinematics and dynamics of the robot or agent as constraints or as part of the motion model itself. Thus, the resulting motion is smooth and physically-plausible for both single robot and multi-robot planning. We apply our approach to planning of deformable soft-body agents via the use of graphics hardware accelerated interference queries. We highlight the approach with a case study on pre-operative planning for liver chemoembolization. Next, we apply it to the case of highly articulated serial chains. Through dynamic dimensionality reduction and optimized collision response, we can successfully plan the motion of \\snake-like robots in a practical amount of time despite the high number of degrees of freedom in the problem. Finally, we show the use of the approach for a large number of bodies in dynamic environments. By applying our approach to both global and local interactions between agents, we can successfully plan for thousands of simple robots in real-world scenarios. We demonstrate their application to large crowd simulations

    Trajectory planning for industrial robot using genetic algorithms

    En las últimas décadas, debido la importancia de sus aplicaciones, se han propuesto muchas investigaciones sobre la planificación de caminos y trayectorias para los manipuladores, algunos de los ámbitos en los que pueden encontrarse ejemplos de aplicación son; la robótica industrial, sistemas autónomos, creación de prototipos virtuales y diseño de fármacos asistido por ordenador. Por otro lado, los algoritmos evolutivos se han aplicado en muchos campos, lo que motiva el interés del autor por investigar sobre su aplicación a la planificación de caminos y trayectorias en robots industriales. En este trabajo se ha llevado a cabo una búsqueda exhaustiva de la literatura existente relacionada con la tesis, que ha servido para crear una completa base de datos utilizada para realizar un examen detallado de la evolución histórica desde sus orígenes al estado actual de la técnica y las últimas tendencias. Esta tesis presenta una nueva metodología que utiliza algoritmos genéticos para desarrollar y evaluar técnicas para la planificación de caminos y trayectorias. El conocimiento de problemas específicos y el conocimiento heurístico se incorporan a la codificación, la evaluación y los operadores genéticos del algoritmo. Esta metodología introduce nuevos enfoques con el objetivo de resolver el problema de la planificación de caminos y la planificación de trayectorias para sistemas robóticos industriales que operan en entornos 3D con obstáculos estáticos, y que ha llevado a la creación de dos algoritmos (de alguna manera similares, con algunas variaciones), que son capaces de resolver los problemas de planificación mencionados. El modelado de los obstáculos se ha realizado mediante el uso de combinaciones de objetos geométricos simples (esferas, cilindros, y los planos), de modo que se obtiene un algoritmo eficiente para la prevención de colisiones. El algoritmo de planificación de caminos se basa en técnicas de optimización globales, usando algoritmos genéticos para minimizar una función objetivo considerando restricciones para evitar las colisiones con los obstáculos. El camino está compuesto de configuraciones adyacentes obtenidas mediante una técnica de optimización construida con algoritmos genéticos, buscando minimizar una función multiobjetivo donde intervienen la distancia entre los puntos significativos de las dos configuraciones adyacentes, así como la distancia desde los puntos de la configuración actual a la final.     Quantization, Calibration and Planning for Euclidean Motions in Robotic Systems

    The properties of Euclidean motions are fundamental in all areas of robotics research. Throughout the past several decades, investigations on some low-level tasks like parameterizing specific movements and generating effective motion plans have fostered high-level operations in an autonomous robotic system. In typical applications, before executing robot motions, a proper quantization of basic motion primitives could simplify online computations; a precise calibration of sensor readings could elevate the accuracy of the system controls. Of particular importance in the whole autonomous robotic task, a safe and efficient motion planning framework would make the whole system operate in a well-organized and effective way. All these modules encourage huge amounts of efforts in solving various fundamental problems, such as the uniformity of quantization in non-Euclidean manifolds, the calibration errors on unknown rigid transformations due to the lack of data correspondence and noise, the narrow passage and the curse of dimensionality bottlenecks in developing motion planning algorithms, etc. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is to tackle these challenges in the topics of quantization, calibration and planning for Euclidean motions

    Efficient configuration space construction and optimization

    The configuration space is a fundamental concept that is widely used in algorithmic robotics. Many applications in robotics, computer-aided design, and related areas can be reduced to computational problems in terms of configuration spaces. In this dissertation, we address three main computational challenges related to configuration spaces: 1) how to efficiently compute an approximate representation of high-dimensional configuration spaces; 2) how to efficiently perform geometric, proximity, and motion planning queries in high dimensional configuration spaces; and 3) how to model uncertainty in configuration spaces represented by noisy sensor data. We present new configuration space construction algorithms based on machine learning and geometric approximation techniques. These algorithms perform collision queries on many configuration samples. The collision query results are used to compute an approximate representation for the configuration space, which quickly converges to the exact configuration space. We highlight the efficiency of our algorithms for penetration depth computation and instance-based motion planning. We also present parallel GPU-based algorithms to accelerate the performance of optimization and search computations in configuration spaces. In particular, we design efficient GPU-based parallel k-nearest neighbor and parallel collision detection algorithms and use these algorithms to accelerate motion planning. In order to extend configuration space algorithms to handle noisy sensor data arising from real-world robotics applications, we model the uncertainty in the configuration space by formulating the collision probabilities for noisy data.     Robottimanipulaattorin anturipohjainen liikesuunnittelu

    When teleoperating a manipulator, obtaining sufficient situational awareness is often difficult. The operator's task can be made easier by automatically taking care of supporting tasks, such as collision avoidance, enabling the operator to concentrate on the manipulation task. In this work planning based collision avoidance methods for a robot manipulator in a changing unstructured environment are studied. Sensor based motion planning system is developed. The system detects the environment using a three-dimensional range sensor and produces an occupancy grid map. Three motion planning algorithms based on rapidly exploring random trees (RRT) are compared based on the planning time of the algorithm, the execution time of the planned motion and the end effector movement caused by the motion. For the experiments the motion planning system was implemented using Kinova JACO robot arm as the manipulator and Microsoft Kinect as the sensor. RRT-based algorithms were found to be suitable for this kind of motion planning systems. Of the algorithms compared, RRT-Connect was the fastest, but RRT* produced the best solution paths. The selection of algorithm depends on the relative value of path quality and solution speed and is application dependent.Teleoperoitaessa manipulaattoria riittävän tilannetietoisuuden välittäminen operaattorille on haastavaa. Operaattorin työtä voidaan helpottaa hoitamalla automaattisesti manipulaatiotehtävää tukevia tehtäviä, kuten törmäyksen välttämistä. Tässä työssä tutkitaan suunnittelupohjaisia menetelmiä robottimanipulaattorin törmäyksen välttämiseen muuttuvassa ja etukäteen tuntemattomassa ympäristössä. Työssä toteutettu anturipohjainen liikesuunnittelujärjestelmä havainnoi ympäristöä kolmiulotteista etäisyysmittausta hyödyntäen ja muodostaa siitä varauskartan. Kolmea nopeasti tutkiviin satunnaispuihin (RRT) perustuvaa liikesuunnittelualgoritmia vertaillaan suunnitteluun kuluneen ajan, liikkeen suoritusajan ja työkalun kulkeman matkan suhteen. Kokeita varten järjestelmä toteutettiin Kinova JACO manipulaattoria ja Microsoft Kinect anturia hyödyntäen. Kokeissa havaittiin RRT algoritmien soveltuvan tämän tyyppisiin liikesuunnittelujärjestelmiin. Vertailluista algoritmeista RRT-Connect oli nopein, mutta RRT* tuotti parhaan ratkaisun.
