    Embedded Vision Systems: A Review of the Literature

    Over the past two decades, the use of low power Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) for the acceleration of various vision systems mainly on embedded devices have become widespread. The reconfigurable and parallel nature of the FPGA opens up new opportunities to speed-up computationally intensive vision and neural algorithms on embedded and portable devices. This paper presents a comprehensive review of embedded vision algorithms and applications over the past decade. The review will discuss vision based systems and approaches, and how they have been implemented on embedded devices. Topics covered include image acquisition, preprocessing, object detection and tracking, recognition as well as high-level classification. This is followed by an outline of the advantages and disadvantages of the various embedded implementations. Finally, an overview of the challenges in the field and future research trends are presented. This review is expected to serve as a tutorial and reference source for embedded computer vision systems

    Miniaturized embedded stereo vision system (MESVS)

    Stereo vision is one of the fundamental problems of computer vision. It is also one of the oldest and heavily investigated areas of 3D vision. Recent advances of stereo matching methodologies and availability of high performance and efficient algorithms along with availability of fast and affordable hardware technology, have allowed researchers to develop several stereo vision systems capable of operating at real-time. Although a multitude of such systems exist in the literature, the majority of them concentrates only on raw performance and quality rather than factors such as dimension, and power requirement, which are of significant importance in the embedded settings. In this thesis a new miniaturized embedded stereo vision system (MESVS) is presented, which is miniaturized to fit within a package of 5x5cm, is power efficient, and cost-effective. Furthermore, through application of embedded programming techniques and careful optimization, MESVS achieves the real-time performance of 20 frames per second. This work discusses the various challenges involved regarding design and implementation of this system and the measures taken to tackle them

    Towards a Common Software/Hardware Methodology for Future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

    The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches. The reader is invited to substantiate the content of this book with the deliverables published during the DESERVE project.     Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Hardware Vision Systems Dedicated to Real-Time Face Recognition

    Human face recognition is an active area of research spanning several disciplines such as image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision. Most researches have concentrated on the algorithms of segmentation, feature extraction, and recognition of human faces, which are generally realized by software implementation on standard computers. However, many applications of human face recognition such as human-computer interfaces, model-based video coding, and security control (Kobayashi, 2001, Yeh & Lee, 1999) need to be high-speed and real-time, for example, passing through customs quickly while ensuring security. For the last years, our laboratory has focused on face processing and obtained interesting results concerning face tracking and recognition by implementing original dedicated hardware systems. Our aim is to implement on embedded systems efficient models of unconstrained face tracking and identity verification in arbitrary scenes. The main goal of these various systems is to provide efficient robustness algorithms that only require moderated computation in order 1) to obtain high success rates of face tracking and identity verification and 2) to cope with the drastic real-time constraints. The goal of this chapter is to describe three different hardware platforms dedicated to face recognition. Each of them has been designed, implemented and evaluated in our laboratory

    Semi-dense SLAM on an FPGA SoC

    Deploying advanced Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping, or SLAM, algorithms in autonomous low-power robotics will enable emerging new applications which require an accurate and information rich reconstruction of the environment. This has not been achieved so far because accuracy and dense 3D reconstruction come with a high computational complexity. This paper discusses custom hardware design on a novel platform for embedded SLAM, an FPGA-SoC, combining an embedded CPU and programmable logic on the same chip. The use of programmable logic, tightly integrated with an efficient multicore embedded CPU stands to provide an effective solution to this problem. In this work an average framerate of more than 4 frames/second for a resolution of 320×240 has been achieved with an estimated power of less than 1 Watt for the custom hardware. In comparison to the software-only version, running on a dual-core ARM processor, an acceleration of 2× has been achieved for LSD-SLAM, without any compromise in the quality of the result

    Vector Disparity Sensor with Vergence Control for Active Vision Systems

    This paper presents an architecture for computing vector disparity for active vision systems as used on robotics applications. The control of the vergence angle of a binocular system allows us to efficiently explore dynamic environments, but requires a generalization of the disparity computation with respect to a static camera setup, where the disparity is strictly 1-D after the image rectification. The interaction between vision and motor control allows us to develop an active sensor that achieves high accuracy of the disparity computation around the fixation point, and fast reaction time for the vergence control. In this contribution, we address the development of a real-time architecture for vector disparity computation using an FPGA device. We implement the disparity unit and the control module for vergence, version, and tilt to determine the fixation point. In addition, two on-chip different alternatives for the vector disparity engines are discussed based on the luminance (gradient-based) and phase information of the binocular images. The multiscale versions of these engines are able to estimate the vector disparity up to 32 fps on VGA resolution images with very good accuracy as shown using benchmark sequences with known ground-truth. The performances in terms of frame-rate, resource utilization, and accuracy of the presented approaches are discussed. On the basis of these results, our study indicates that the gradient-based approach leads to the best trade-off choice for the integration with the active vision system
