    Design and Modeling of 9 Degrees of Freedom Redundant Robotic Manipulator

    In disaster areas, robot manipulators are used to rescue and clearance of sites. Because of the damaged area, they encounter disturbances like obstacles, and limited workspace to explore the area and to achieve the location of the victims. Increasing the degrees of freedom is required to boost the adaptability of manipulators to avoid disturbances, and to obtain the fast desired position and precise movements of the end-effector. These robot manipulators offer a reliable way to handle the barrier challenges since they can search in places that humans can't reach. In this research paper, the 9-DOF robotic manipulator is designed, and an analytical model is developed to examine the system’s behavior in different scenarios. The kinematic and dynamic representation of the proposed model is analyzed to obtain the translation or rotation, and joint torques to achieve the expected position, velocity, and acceleration respectively. The number of degrees may be raised to avoid disturbances, and to obtain the fast desired position and precise movements of the end-effector. The simulation of developed models is performed to ensure the adaptable movement of the manipulators working in distinct configurations and controlling their motion thoroughly and effectively. In the proposed configuration the joints can easily be moved to achieve the desired position of the end-effector and the results are satisfactory. The simulation results show that the redundant manipulator achieves the victim location with various configurations of the manipulator. Results reveal the effectiveness and efficacy of the proposed system

    Modeling and Contour Control of Multi-Axis Linear Driven Machine Tools

    In modern manufacturing industries, many applications require precision motion control of multi-agent systems, like multi-joint robot arms and multi-axis machine tools. Cutter (end effector) should stay as close as possible to the reference trajectory to ensure the quality of the final products. In conventional computer numerical control (CNC), the control unit of each axis is independently designed to achieve the best individual tracking performance. However, this becomes less effective when dealing with multi-axis contour following tasks because of the lack of coordination among axes. This dissertation studies the control of multi-axis machine tools with focus on reducing the contour error. The proposed research explicitly addresses the minimization of contour error and treats the multi-axis machine tool as a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system instead of several decoupled single-input-single-output (SISO) systems. New control schemes are developed to achieve superior contour following performance even in the presence of disturbances. This study also extends the applications of the proposed control system from plane contours to regular contours in R3. The effectiveness of the developed control systems is experimentally verified on a micro milling machine

    Reachability Map for Diverse and Energy Efficient Stepping of Humanoids

    In legged locomotion, the relationship between different gait behaviors and energy consumption must consider the full-body dynamics and the robot control as a whole, which cannot be captured by simple models. This work studies the totality of robot dynamics and whole-body optimal control as a coupled system to investigate energy consumption during balance recovery. We developed a two-phase nonlinear optimization pipeline for dynamic stepping, which generates reachability maps showing complex energy-stepping relations. We optimize gait parameters to search all reachable locations and quantify the energy cost during dynamic transitions, which allows studying the relationship between energy consumption and stepping locations given different initial conditions. We found that to achieve efficient actuation, the stepping location and timing can have simple approximations close to the underlying optimality, resulting in optimal step positions with a 10.9% lower energy cost than those generated by linear inverted pendulum model. Despite the complexity of this nonlinear process, we found that near-minimal effort stepping locations are within a region of attractions, rather than a narrow solution space suggested by a simple model. This provides new insights into the nonuniqueness of near-optimal solutions in robot motion planning and control, and the diversity of stepping behavior in humans

    Uavs path planning under a bi-objective optimization framework for smart cities

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used extensively for search and rescue operations, surveillance, disaster monitoring, attacking terrorists, etc. due to their growing advantages of low-cost, high maneuverability, and easy deployability. This study proposes a mixed-integer programming model under a multi-objective optimization framework to design trajectories that enable a set of UAVs to execute surveillance tasks. The first objective maximizes the cumulative probability of target detection to aim for mission planning success. The second objective ensures minimization of cumulative path length to provide a higher resource utilization goal. A two-step variable neighborhood search (VNS) algorithm is offered, which addresses the combinatorial optimization issue for determining the near-optimal sequence for cell visiting to reach the target. Numerical experiments and simulation results are evaluated in numerous benchmark instances. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach can favorably support practical deployability purposes

    Physical Interaction of Autonomous Robots in Complex Environments

    Recent breakthroughs in the fields of computer vision and robotics are firmly changing the people perception about robots. Itsafelyplacesrobotsindomesticenvironments in order to facilitate humans daily life. Industrial robotics is now reconsidering its basic idea of robot as a worker. Currently, the primary method to guarantee the personnels safety in industrial environments is the installation of physical barriers around the working area of robots. The development of new technologies and new algorithms in the sensor field and in the robotic one has led to a new generation of lightweight and collaborative robots. Therefore, industrial robotics leveraged the intrinsic properties of this kind of robots to generate a robot co-worker that is able to safely coexist, collaborate and interact inside its workspace with both personnels and objects. This Ph.D. dissertation focuses on the generation of a pipeline for fast object pose estimation and distance computation of moving objects,in both structured and unstructured environments,using RGB-D images. This pipeline outputs the command actions which let the robot complete its main task and fulfil the safety human-robot coexistence behaviour at once. The proposed pipeline is divided into an object segmentation part,a 6D.o.F. object pose estimation part and a real-time collision avoidance part for safe human-robot coexistence. Firstly, the segmentation module finds candidate object clusters out of RGB-D images of clutter scenes using a graph-based image segmentation technique. This segmentation technique generates a cluster of pixels for each object found in the image. The candidate object clusters are then fed as input to the 6 D.o.F. object pose estimation module. The latter is in charge of estimating both the translation and the orientation in 3D space of each candidate object clusters. The object pose is then employed by the robotic arm to compute a suitable grasping policy. The last module generates a force vector field of the environment surrounding the robot, the objects and the humans. This force vector field drives the robot toward its goal while any potential collision against objects and/or humans is safely avoided.     Cooperative control for multi-vehicle swarms

    The cooperative control of large-scale multi-agent systems has gained a significant interest in recent years from the robotics and control communities for multi-vehicle control. One motivator for the growing interest is the application of spatially and temporally distributed multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems for distributed sensing and collaborative operations. In this research, the multi-vehicle control problem is addressed using a decentralised control system. The work aims to provide a decentralised control framework that synthesises the self-organised and coordinated behaviour of natural swarming systems into cooperative UAV systems. The control system design framework is generalised for application into various other multi-agent systems including cellular robotics, ad-hoc communication networks, and modular smart-structures. The approach involves identifying su itable relationships that describe the behaviour of the UAVs within the swarm and the interactions of these behaviours to produce purposeful high-level actions for system operators. A major focus concerning the research involves the development of suitable analytical tools that decomposes the general swarm behaviours to the local vehicle level. The control problem is approached using two-levels of abstraction; the supervisory level, and the local vehicle level. Geometric control techniques based on differential geometry are used at the supervisory level to reduce the control problem to a small set of permutation and size invariant abstract descriptors. The abstract descriptors provide an open-loop optimal state and control trajectory for the collective swarm and are used to describe the intentions of the vehicles. Decentralised optimal control is implemented at the local vehicle level to synthesise self-organised and cooperative behaviour. A deliberative control scheme is implemented at the local vehicle le vel that demonstrates autonomous, cooperative and optimal behaviour whilst the preserving precision and reliability at the local vehicle level

    Robust Spline Path Following for Redundant Mechanical Systems

    Path following controllers make the output of a control system approach and traverse a pre-specified path with no a priori time-parametrization. The first part of the thesis implements a path following controller for a simple class of paths, based on transverse feedback linearization (TFL), which guarantees invariance of the path to be followed. The coordinate and feedback transformation employed allows one to easily design control laws to generate arbitrary desired motions on the path for the closed-loop system. The approach is applied to an uncertain and simplified model of a fully actuated robot manipulator for which none of the dynamic parameters are measured. The controller is made robust to modelling uncertainties using Lyapunov redesign. The experimental results show a substantial improvement when using the robust controller for path following versus standard state feedback. In the second part of the thesis, the class of paths and systems considered are extended. We present a method for path following control design applicable to framed curves generated by spline interpolating waypoints in the workspace of kinematically redundant mechanical systems. The class of admissible paths include self-intersecting curves. Kinematic redundancies of the system are resolved by designing controllers that solve a suitably defined constrained quadratic optimization problem that can be easily tuned by the designer to achieve various desired poses. The class of redundant systems considered include mobile manipulators for a large class of wheeled ground vehicles. The result is a path following controller that simultaneously controls the manipulator and mobile base, without any trajectory planning performed on the mobile base. The approach is experimentally verified using the robust controller developed in the first part of the thesis on a 4-degree-of-freedom (4DOF) redundant manipulator and a mobile manipulator system with a differential drive base

    Actuators for Intelligent Electric Vehicles

    This book details the advanced actuators for IEVs and the control algorithm design. In the actuator design, the configuration four-wheel independent drive/steering electric vehicles is reviewed. An in-wheel two-speed AMT with selectable one-way clutch is designed for IEV. Considering uncertainties, the optimization design for the planetary gear train of IEV is conducted. An electric power steering system is designed for IEV. In addition, advanced control algorithms are proposed in favour of active safety improvement. A supervision mechanism is applied to the segment drift control of autonomous driving. Double super-resolution network is used to design the intelligent driving algorithm. Torque distribution control technology and four-wheel steering technology are utilized for path tracking and adaptive cruise control. To advance the control accuracy, advanced estimation algorithms are studied in this book. The tyre-road peak friction coefficient under full slip rate range is identified based on the normalized tyre model. The pressure of the electro-hydraulic brake system is estimated based on signal fusion. Besides, a multi-semantic driver behaviour recognition model of autonomous vehicles is designed using confidence fusion mechanism. Moreover, a mono-vision based lateral localization system of low-cost autonomous vehicles is proposed with deep learning curb detection. To sum up, the discussed advanced actuators, control and estimation algorithms are beneficial to the active safety improvement of IEVs
