    Digital implementation of the cellular sensor-computers

    Two different kinds of cellular sensor-processor architectures are used nowadays in various applications. The first is the traditional sensor-processor architecture, where the sensor and the processor arrays are mapped into each other. The second is the foveal architecture, in which a small active fovea is navigating in a large sensor array. This second architecture is introduced and compared here. Both of these architectures can be implemented with analog and digital processor arrays. The efficiency of the different implementation types, depending on the used CMOS technology, is analyzed. It turned out, that the finer the technology is, the better to use digital implementation rather than analog

    SIMD pipelined processor implemented on a FPGA

    The goal of this thesis was to create a processor using VHDL that could be used for educational purposes as well as a stepping stone in creating a reconfigurable system for digital signal processing or image processing applications. To do this a subset of MIPS instructions were chosen to demonstrate functionality within a five stage pipeline (instruction fetch, instruction decode, execution, memory, and write back) processor in simulation and in synthesis. A hazard controller was implemented to handle data forwarding and stalling. The basic MIPS architecture was extended by adding singlecycle multiplication functionality and single-cycle SIMD instructions. The architecture contains parameters for easy modification of SIMD units depending on the needs of the processor. The SIMD architecture was designed with distributed memory so that every memory unit received the same address. This simplifies the address logic so that the processor does not have to use a complex addressing mode. The memory can be pictured as row and columns method of access. The SIMD instructions were chosen to be able to perform binary operations to implement future morphological operations and to use the multiply and add operations for implementing MACs to perform convolution and filtering operations in future image processing applications. The board being used to verify the processor was a Xilinx University Program (XUP) board that contains Xilinx Virtex II Pro XC2VP30 FPGA, package FF896. The maximum number of units that can be instantiated in the FPGA on the XUP board is eight units which would use the entire FPGA slice area. This allows the processor to complete eight sets of 32-bit data operations per cycle when the SIMD pipeline is full. The design was shown to operate at the maximum speed of 100 MHz and utilize all the area of the FPGA. The processor was verified in both simulation and synthesis. The new soft-core 32-bit SIMD processor extends existing soft-core processors in that it provides a reconfigurable SIMD-pipeline allowing it to operate on multiple inputs concurrently, with 32-bit operands and a single-cycle throughput

    Hierarchical stack filtering : a bitplane-based algorithm for massively parallel processors

    With the development of novel parallel architectures for image processing, the implementation of well-known image operators needs to be reformulated to take advantage of the so-called massive parallelism. In this work, we propose a general algorithm that implements a large class of nonlinear filters, called stack filters, with a 2D-array processor. The proposed method consists of decomposing an image into bitplanes with the bitwise decomposition, and then process every bitplane hierarchically. The filtered image is reconstructed by simply stacking the filtered bitplanes according to their order of significance. Owing to its hierarchical structure, our algorithm allows us to trade-off between image quality and processing time, and to significantly reduce the computation time of low-entropy images. Also, experimental tests show that the processing time of our method is substantially lower than that of classical methods when using large structuring elements. All these features are of interest to a variety of real-time applications based on morphological operations such as video segmentation and video enhancement

    Efficient Irregular Wavefront Propagation Algorithms on Hybrid CPU-GPU Machines

    In this paper, we address the problem of efficient execution of a computation pattern, referred to here as the irregular wavefront propagation pattern (IWPP), on hybrid systems with multiple CPUs and GPUs. The IWPP is common in several image processing operations. In the IWPP, data elements in the wavefront propagate waves to their neighboring elements on a grid if a propagation condition is satisfied. Elements receiving the propagated waves become part of the wavefront. This pattern results in irregular data accesses and computations. We develop and evaluate strategies for efficient computation and propagation of wavefronts using a multi-level queue structure. This queue structure improves the utilization of fast memories in a GPU and reduces synchronization overheads. We also develop a tile-based parallelization strategy to support execution on multiple CPUs and GPUs. We evaluate our approaches on a state-of-the-art GPU accelerated machine (equipped with 3 GPUs and 2 multicore CPUs) using the IWPP implementations of two widely used image processing operations: morphological reconstruction and euclidean distance transform. Our results show significant performance improvements on GPUs. The use of multiple CPUs and GPUs cooperatively attains speedups of 50x and 85x with respect to single core CPU executions for morphological reconstruction and euclidean distance transform, respectively.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figure

    Intensity-based image registration using multiple distributed agents

    Image registration is the process of geometrically aligning images taken from different sensors, viewpoints or instances in time. It plays a key role in the detection of defects or anomalies for automated visual inspection. A multiagent distributed blackboard system has been developed for intensity-based image registration. The images are divided into segments and allocated to agents on separate processors, allowing parallel computation of a similarity metric that measures the degree of likeness between reference and sensed images after the application of a transform. The need for a dedicated control module is removed by coordination of agents via the blackboard. Tests show that additional agents increase speed, provided the communication capacity of the blackboard is not saturated. The success of the approach in achieving registration, despite significant misalignment of the original images, is demonstrated in the detection of manufacturing defects on screen-printed plastic bottles and printed circuit boards

    A reconfigurable real-time morphological system for augmented vision

    There is a significant number of visually impaired individuals who suffer sensitivity loss to high spatial frequencies, for whom current optical devices are limited in degree of visual aid and practical application. Digital image and video processing offers a variety of effective visual enhancement methods that can be utilised to obtain a practical augmented vision head-mounted display device. The high spatial frequencies of an image can be extracted by edge detection techniques and overlaid on top of the original image to improve visual perception among the visually impaired. Augmented visual aid devices require highly user-customisable algorithm designs for subjective configuration per task, where current digital image processing visual aids offer very little user-configurable options. This paper presents a highly user-reconfigurable morphological edge enhancement system on field-programmable gate array, where the morphological, internal and external edge gradients can be selected from the presented architecture with specified edge thickness and magnitude. In addition, the morphology architecture supports reconfigurable shape structuring elements and configurable morphological operations. The proposed morphology-based visual enhancement system introduces a high degree of user flexibility in addition to meeting real-time constraints capable of obtaining 93 fps for high-definition image resolution
