    Identification of nonlinear systems using hybrid functions

    Most real systems have nonlinear behavior and thus model linearization may not produce an accurate representation of them. This paper presents a method based on hybrid functions to identify the parameters of nonlinear real systems. A hybrid function is a combination of two groups of orthogonal functions: piecewise orthogonal functions (e.g. Block-Pulse) and continuous orthogonal functions (e.g. Legendre polynomials). These functions are completed with an operational matrix of integration and a product matrix. Therefore, it is possible to convert nonlinear differential and integration equations into algebraic equations. After mathematical manipulation, the unknown linear and nonlinear parameters are identified. As an example, a mechanical system with single degree of freedom is simulated using the proposed method and the results are compared against those of an existing approach.<br /

    Adaptive Gain and Order Scheduling of Optimal Fractional Order PI{\lambda}D{\mu} Controllers with Radial Basis Function Neural-Network

    Gain and order scheduling of fractional order (FO) PI{\lambda}D{\mu} controllers are studied in this paper considering four different classes of higher order processes. The mapping between the optimum PID/FOPID controller parameters and the reduced order process models are done using Radial Basis Function (RBF) type Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Simulation studies have been done to show the effectiveness of the RBFNN for online scheduling of such controllers with random change in set-point and process parameters.Comment: 6 pages, 12 figure

    Modeling and control of flatness in cold rolling mill using fuzzy petri nets

    Today, having a good flatness control in steel industry is essential to ensure an overall product quality, productivity and successful processing. Flatness error, given as difference between measured strip flatness and target curve, can be minimized by modifying roll gap with various control functions. In most practical systems, knowing the definition of the model in order to have an acceptable control is essential. In this paper, a fuzzy Petri net method for modeling and control of flatness in cold rolling mill is developed. The method combines the concepts of Petri net and fuzzy control theories. It focuses on the fuzzy decision making problems of the fuzzy rule tree structures. The method is able to detect and recover possible errors that can occur in the fuzzy rule of the knowledge-based system. The method is implemented and simulated. The results show that its error is less than that of a PI conventional controller.<br /

    Avoidance High-Frequency Chattering Second-Order Sliding Mode Controller Design: Buck Converter in Wind Power System

    This paper mainly discussed a method of high-frequency second-order sliding mode control for Buck converter in wind power systems. Because the wind energy of nature is always unpredictable and intermittent, the robust control such as sliding mode control is adopted in past literatures. In order to remove the high frequency chattering problem when the traditional sliding mode achieves convergence, the second order sliding mode algorithm is reviewed firstly. Meanwhile, the Buck converter taken as a step-down converter is usually adopted in wind power system, because of its simple structure and good linearity. Under those conditions, the second order sliding mode controller is designed based on Buck converter, especially in high-power wind generation system. The experimental results illustrate that the theory of second order sliding mode can be used in high-power Buck converter. It provides one novel avoidance high frequency chattering method for the technology development of new energy generation system

    Fuel efficiency in a hybrid electric vehicle requires a fine balance between usage of combustion engine and battery power. Information about the geometry of the road and traffic ahead can have a great impact on optimized control and the power split between the main parts of a hybrid electric vehicle. This paper provides a survey on the existing methods of control and energy management emphasizing on those that consider the look-ahead road situation and trajectory information. Then it presents the future trends in the control and energy management of hybrid electric vehicles.<br /

    This paper investigates the finite-time H∞ fault estimation problem for linear time-delay systems, where the delay appears in both state and measurement equations. Firstly, the design of finite horizon H∞ fault estimation is converted into a minimum problem of certain quadratic form. Then we introduce a stochastic system in Krein space, and a sufficient and necessary condition for the minimum is derived by applying innovation analysis approach and projection theory. Finally, a solution to the H∞ fault estimation is obtained by recursively computing a partial difference Riccati equation, which has the same dimension as the original system. Compared with the conventional augmented approach, the solving of a high dimension Riccati equation is avoided

    Dynamic Control Applied to a Laboratory Antilock Braking System

    The control of an antilock braking system is a difficult problem due to the existence of nonlinear dynamics and uncertainties of its characteristics. To overcome these issues, in this work, a dynamic nonlinear controller is proposed, based on a nonlinear observer. To evaluate its performance, this controller has been implemented on an ABS Laboratory setup, representing a quarter car model. The nonlinear observer reconstructs some of the state variables of the setup, assumed not measurable, to establish a fair benchmark for an ABS system of a real automobile. The dynamic controller ensures exponential convergence of the state estimation, as well as robustness with respect to parameter variations

    Improved model reduction and tuning of fractional-order PI(λ)D(μ) controllers for analytical rule extraction with genetic programming

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Genetic algorithm (GA) has been used in this study for a new approach of suboptimal model reduction in the Nyquist plane and optimal time domain tuning of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and fractional-order (FO) PI(λ)D(μ) controllers. Simulation studies show that the new Nyquist-based model reduction technique outperforms the conventional H(2)-norm-based reduced parameter modeling technique. With the tuned controller parameters and reduced-order model parameter dataset, optimum tuning rules have been developed with a test-bench of higher-order processes via genetic programming (GP). The GP performs a symbolic regression on the reduced process parameters to evolve a tuning rule which provides the best analytical expression to map the data. The tuning rules are developed for a minimum time domain integral performance index described by a weighted sum of error index and controller effort. From the reported Pareto optimal front of the GP-based optimal rule extraction technique, a trade-off can be made between the complexity of the tuning formulae and the control performance. The efficacy of the single-gene and multi-gene GP-based tuning rules has been compared with the original GA-based control performance for the PID and PI(λ)D(μ) controllers, handling four different classes of representative higher-order processes. These rules are very useful for process control engineers, as they inherit the power of the GA-based tuning methodology, but can be easily calculated without the requirement for running the computationally intensive GA every time. Three-dimensional plots of the required variation in PID/fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller parameters with reduced process parameters have been shown as a guideline for the operator.     A Novel Fractional Order Fuzzy PID Controller and Its Optimal Time Domain Tuning Based on Integral Performance Indices

    A novel fractional order (FO) fuzzy Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller has been proposed in this paper which works on the closed loop error and its fractional derivative as the input and has a fractional integrator in its output. The fractional order differ-integrations in the proposed fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are kept as design variables along with the input-output scaling factors (SF) and are optimized with Genetic Algorithm (GA) while minimizing several integral error indices along with the control signal as the objective function. Simulations studies are carried out to control a delayed nonlinear process and an open loop unstable process with time delay. The closed loop performances and controller efforts in each case are compared with conventional PID, fuzzy PID and PI{\lambda}D{\mu} controller subjected to different integral performance indices. Simulation results show that the proposed fractional order fuzzy PID controller outperforms the others in most cases.Comment: 30 pages, 20 figure
