    Milestones in Autonomous Driving and Intelligent Vehicles Part \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1}: Control, Computing System Design, Communication, HD Map, Testing, and Human Behaviors

    Interest in autonomous driving (AD) and intelligent vehicles (IVs) is growing at a rapid pace due to the convenience, safety, and economic benefits. Although a number of surveys have reviewed research achievements in this field, they are still limited in specific tasks and lack systematic summaries and research directions in the future. Our work is divided into 3 independent articles and the first part is a Survey of Surveys (SoS) for total technologies of AD and IVs that involves the history, summarizes the milestones, and provides the perspectives, ethics, and future research directions. This is the second part (Part \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1} for this technical survey) to review the development of control, computing system design, communication, High Definition map (HD map), testing, and human behaviors in IVs. In addition, the third part (Part \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} for this technical survey) is to review the perception and planning sections. The objective of this paper is to involve all the sections of AD, summarize the latest technical milestones, and guide abecedarians to quickly understand the development of AD and IVs. Combining the SoS and Part \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2}, we anticipate that this work will bring novel and diverse insights to researchers and abecedarians, and serve as a bridge between past and future.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

    Optimal Control of Legged-Robots Subject to Friction Cone Constraints

    A hierarchical control architecture is presented for energy-efficient control of legged robots subject to variety of linear/nonlinear inequality constraints such as Coulomb friction cones, switching unilateral contacts, actuator saturation limits, and yet minimizing the power losses in the joint actuators. The control formulation can incorporate the nonlinear friction cone constraints into the control without recourse to the common linear approximation of the constraints or introduction of slack variables. A performance metric is introduced that allows trading-off the multiple constraints when otherwise finding an optimal solution is not feasible. Moreover, the projection-based controller does not require the minimal-order dynamics model and hence allows switching contacts that is particularly appealing for legged robots. The fundamental properties of constrained inertia matrix derived are similar to those of general inertia matrix of the system and subsequently these properties are greatly exploited for control design purposes. The problem of task space control with minimum (point-wise) power dissipation subject to all physical constraints is transcribed into a quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) that can be solved by barrier methods

    A Piezoresistive Array Armband With Reduced Number of Sensors for Hand Gesture Recognition

    Human machine interfaces (HMIs) are employed in a broad range of applications, spanning from assistive devices for disability to remote manipulation and gaming controllers. In this study, a new piezoresistive sensors array armband is proposed for hand gesture recognition. The armband encloses only three sensors targeting specific forearm muscles, with the aim to discriminate eight hand movements. Each sensor is made by a force-sensitive resistor (FSR) with a dedicated mechanical coupler and is designed to sense muscle swelling during contraction. The armband is designed to be easily wearable and adjustable for any user and was tested on 10 volunteers. Hand gestures are classified by means of different machine learning algorithms, and classification performances are assessed applying both, the 10-fold and leave-one-out cross-validations. A linear support vector machine provided 96% mean accuracy across all participants. Ultimately, this classifier was implemented on an Arduino platform and allowed successful control for videogames in real-time. The low power consumption together with the high level of accuracy suggests the potential of this device for exergames commonly employed for neuromotor rehabilitation. The reduced number of sensors makes this HMI also suitable for hand-prosthesis control

    A cyber-physical system (CPS) is composed of tightly-integrated computation, communication and physical elements. Medical devices, buildings, mobile devices, robots, transportation and energy systems can benefit from CPS co-design and optimization techniques. Cyber-physical vehicle systems (CPVSs) are rapidly advancing due to progress in real-time computing, control and artificial intelligence. Multidisciplinary or multi-objective design optimization maximizes CPS efficiency, capability and safety, while online regulation enables the vehicle to be responsive to disturbances, modeling errors and uncertainties. CPVS optimization occurs at design-time and at run-time. This paper surveys the run-time cooperative optimization or co-optimization of cyber and physical systems, which have historically been considered separately. A run-time CPVS is also cooperatively regulated or co-regulated when cyber and physical resources are utilized in a manner that is responsive to both cyber and physical system requirements. This paper surveys research that considers both cyber and physical resources in co-optimization and co-regulation schemes with applications to mobile robotic and vehicle systems.     Limited Information Shared Control and its Applications to Large Vehicle Manipulators

    Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der kooperativen Regelung einer mobilen Arbeitsmaschine, welche aus einem Nutzfahrzeug und einem oder mehreren hydraulischen Manipulatoren besteht. Solche Maschinen werden für Aufgaben in der Straßenunterhaltungsaufgaben eingesetzt. Die Arbeitsumgebung des Manipulators ist unstrukturiert, was die Bestimmung einer Referenztrajektorie erschwert oder unmöglich macht. Deshalb wird in dieser Arbeit ein Ansatz vorgeschlagen, welcher nur das Fahrzeug automatisiert, während der menschliche Bediener ein Teil des Systems bleibt und den Manipulator steuert. Eine solche Teilautomatisierung des Gesamtsystems führt zu einer speziellen Klasse von Mensch-Maschine-Interaktionen, welche in der Literatur noch nicht untersucht wurde: Eine kooperative Regelung zwischen zwei Teilsystemen, bei der die Automatisierung keine Informationen von dem vom Menschen gesteuerten Teilsystem hat. Deswegen wird in dieser Arbeit ein systematischer Ansatz der kooperativen Regelung mit begrenzter Information vorgestellt, der den menschlichen Bediener unterstützen kann, ohne die Referenzen oder die Systemzustände des Manipulators zu messen. Außerdem wird ein systematisches Entwurfskonzept für die kooperative Regelung mit begrenzter Information vorgestellt. Für diese Entwurfsmethode werden zwei neue Unterklassen der sogenannten Potenzialspiele eingeführt, die eine systematische Berechnung der Parameter der entwickelten kooperativen Regelung ohne manuelle Abstimmung ermöglichen. Schließlich wird das entwickelte Konzept der kooperativen Regelung am Beispiel einer großen mobilen Arbeitsmaschine angewandt, um seine Vorteile zu ermitteln und zu bewerten. Nach der Analyse in Simulationen wird die praktische Anwendbarkeit der Methode in drei Experimenten mit menschlichen Probanden an einem Simulator untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen die Überlegenheit des entwickelten kooperativen Regelungskonzepts gegenüber der manuellen Steuerung und der nicht-kooperativen Steuerung hinsichtlich sowohl der objektiven Performanz als auch der subjektiven Bewertung der Probanden. Somit zeigt diese Dissertation, dass die kooperative Regelung mobiler Arbeitsmaschinen mit den entwickelten theoretischen Konzepten sowohl hilfreich als auch praktisch anwendbar ist

    Modeling, Evaluation, and Scale on Artificial Pedestrians: A Literature Review

    Modeling pedestrian dynamics and their implementation in a computer are challenging and important issues in the knowledge areas of transportation and computer simulation. The aim of this article is to provide a bibliographic outlook so that the reader may have quick access to the most relevant works related to this problem. We have used three main axes to organize the article's contents: pedestrian models, validation techniques, and multiscale approaches. The backbone of this work is the classification of existing pedestrian models; we have organized the works in the literature under five categories, according to the techniques used for implementing the operational level in each pedestrian model. Then the main existing validation methods, oriented to evaluate the behavioral quality of the simulation systems, are reviewed. Furthermore, we review the key issues that arise when facing multiscale pedestrian modeling, where we first focus on the behavioral scale (combinations of micro and macro pedestrian models) and second on the scale size (from individuals to crowds). The article begins by introducing the main characteristics of walking dynamics and its analysis tools and concludes with a discussion about the contributions that different knowledge fields can make in the near future to this exciting area

    A fast and robust deep convolutional neural networks for complex human activity recognition using smartphone

As a significant role in healthcare and sports applications, human activity recognition (HAR) techniques are capable of monitoring humans’ daily behavior. It has spurred the demand for intelligent sensors and has been giving rise to the explosive growth of wearable and mobile devices. They provide the most availability of human activity data (big data). Powerful algorithms are required to analyze these heterogeneous and high-dimension streaming data efficiently. This paper proposes a novel fast and robust deep convolutional neural network structure (FR-DCNN) for human activity recognition (HAR) using a smartphone. It enhances the effectiveness and extends the information of the collected raw data from the inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors by integrating a series of signal processing algorithms and a signal selection module. It enables a fast computational method for building the DCNN classifier by adding a data compression module. Experimental results on the sampled 12 complex activities dataset show that the proposed FR-DCNN model is the best method for fast computation and high accuracy recognition. The FR-DCNN model only needs 0.0029 s to predict activity in an online way with 95.27% accuracy. Meanwhile, it only takes 88 s (average) to establish the DCNN classifier on the compressed dataset with less precision loss 94.18%

    Vulnerable road users and connected autonomous vehicles interaction: a survey

    There is a group of users within the vehicular traffic ecosystem known as Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). VRUs include pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, among others. On the other hand, connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are a set of technologies that combines, on the one hand, communication technologies to stay always ubiquitous connected, and on the other hand, automated technologies to assist or replace the human driver during the driving process. Autonomous vehicles are being visualized as a viable alternative to solve road accidents providing a general safe environment for all the users on the road specifically to the most vulnerable. One of the problems facing autonomous vehicles is to generate mechanisms that facilitate their integration not only within the mobility environment, but also into the road society in a safe and efficient way.     Research Trends and Future Perspectives in Marine Biomimicking Robotics

    Mechatronic and soft robotics are taking inspiration from the animal kingdom to create new high-performance robots. Here, we focused on marine biomimetic research and used innovative bibliographic statistics tools, to highlight established and emerging knowledge domains. A total of 6980 scientific publications retrieved from the Scopus database (1950–2020), evidencing a sharp research increase in 2003–2004. Clustering analysis of countries collaborations showed two major Asian-North America and European clusters. Three significant areas appeared: (i) energy provision, whose advancement mainly relies on microbial fuel cells, (ii) biomaterials for not yet fully operational soft-robotic solutions; and finally (iii), design and control, chiefly oriented to locomotor designs. In this scenario, marine biomimicking robotics still lacks solutions for the long-lasting energy provision, which presently hinders operation autonomy. In the research environment, identifying natural processes by which living organisms obtain energy is thus urgent to sustain energy-demanding tasks while, at the same time, the natural designs must increasingly inform to optimize energy consumption
