    Multiphase induction motor drives - a technology status review

    The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio

    To develop an efficient variable speed compressor motor system

    This research presents a proposed new method of improving the energy efficiency of a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) for induction motors. The principles of VSD are reviewed with emphasis on the efficiency and power losses associated with the operation of the variable speed compressor motor drive, particularly at low speed operation.The efficiency of induction motor when operated at rated speed and load torque is high. However at low load operation, application of the induction motor at rated flux will cause the iron losses to increase excessively, hence its efficiency will reduce dramatically. To improve this efficiency, it is essential to obtain the flux level that minimizes the total motor losses. This technique is known as an efficiency or energy optimization control method. In practice, typical of the compressor load does not require high dynamic response, therefore improvement of the efficiency optimization control that is proposed in this research is based on scalar control model.In this research, development of a new neural network controller for efficiency optimization control is proposed. The controller is designed to generate both voltage and frequency reference signals imultaneously. To achieve a robust controller from variation of motor parameters, a real-time or on-line learning algorithm based on a second order optimization Levenberg-Marquardt is employed. The simulation of the proposed controller for variable speed compressor is presented. The results obtained clearly show that the efficiency at low speed is significant increased. Besides that the speed of the motor can be maintained. Furthermore, the controller is also robust to the motor parameters variation. The simulation results are also verified by experiment

    Acoustic noise radiated by PWM-controlled induction machine drives

    This paper investigates the acoustic noise radiated from two nominally identical induction motors when fed from sinusoidal, and asymmetric regular sampling subharmonic and space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converters. The theory for analyzing the noise spectrum is developed further to account for the interaction between the motor and the drive. It is shown that manufacturing tolerances can result in significant differences in the noise level emitted from nominally identical motors, and that mechanical resonances can result in extremely high noise emissions. Such resonances can be induced by stator and rotor slot air-gap field harmonics due to the fundamental component of current, and by the interaction between the airgap field harmonics produced by the fundamental and the PWM harmonic currents. The significance of the effect of PWM strategy on the noise is closely related to the mechanical resonance with vibration mode order zero, while the PWM strategy will be critical only if the dominant cause of the emitted noise is the interaction of the fundamental air-gap field and PWM harmonic

    Mathematical modelling of a vector controlled LIM drive

    The linear induction motor is often still considered to be a special-purpose machine that is tailored to meet specific needs, but it is slowly finding more applications with its added advantages over rotary motors. This thesis is concerned with the development of a mathematical model which provides the transient and steady-state performance of a current-regulated inverter-fed linear induction motor system. The linear induction motor is posed as a one-dimensional electromagnetic field problem, to provide a better understanding of the so called 'endeffect' phenomena, which accounts mainly for the difference in performance between the linear induction motor and its rotary counterpart. An equivalent circuit is described that takes into account these end-effect transients for a single-sided linear induction motor. An accurate model for the inverter switching action is developed and the performance of the complete system under various operating conditions is studied, and compared with experimental results obtained from published literature. A closed-loop control system is implemented, using conventional field-oriented control and a newer and simpler method known as Natural Field Orientation is investigated, and compared with both the direct and indirect field orientation methods. In Natural Field Orientation, a decoupled control of torque and flux producing components of current is easily achieved by using the machines inherent properties, to establish a correct field-orientation, and this allows the induction motor to provide a performance that combines the control characteristics of the dc motor with the merits of the induction motor

    Impact of PWM strategies on RMS current of the DC-link Voltage Capacitor of a dual-three phase drive

    The major drawback of usual dual three-phase AC machines, when supplied by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is the occurrence of extra harmonic currents which circulate in the stator windings causing additional losses and constraints on the power component. This paper compares dedicated Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies used for controlling a dual three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine supplied by a six-leg VSI. Since the application is intended for low-voltage (48V) mild-hybrid automotive traction, an additional major constraint arises: the compactness of the drive related to the size of the DC-bus capacitor. Thus, the PWM strategy must be chosen by taking into consideration its impact on both, the motor and the RMS value of DC-bus current

    High Performance of CSI Fed IM Drives at Low Speed operation with MRAS Based Estimation of Stator Resistance

    This paper is proposed to improve the performance of sensorless vector controlled CSI fed induction motor drives during low-speed operations. In general the performance of sensorless vector controlled induction motor drives is poor at very low speed due to stator resistance variations and the estimated flux and torque deviates from its set value. Therefore online tuning of the stator resistance is necessary at very low speed. The performance and efficiency of an induction motor drive system can be enhanced by online tuning of stator resistance. A novel model reference adaptive system (MRAS)-based algorithm for simultaneous identification of stator resistance (Rs) and rotor speed (ðŽr) implemented in sensorless Field oriented controlled CSI fed induction motor. The reference model and adjustable model are interchangeable for concurrent ðŽr and Rs estimation in the low-speed operating region is investigated. The simulation and experimental results are proved that the proposed method is improving the performance of the drive system at low speed operation

This converter reduces the voltage constraints between all cells, which results in a lower transmission losses, high switching frequencies and the improvement of the output voltage waveforms. This paper proposes an improved topology of the series multicell inverter which minimizes harmonics, reduces torque ripples and losses in a variable-speed induction motor drive. The flying capacitor multilevel inverter topology based on the classical and modified phase shift pulse width modulation (PSPWM, MPSPWM) techniques are applied in this paper to minimize harmonic distortion at the inverter output. Simulation results are presented for a 2-kW induction motor drive and the results obtained demonstrate reduced harmonics, improved transient responses and reference tracking performance of the voltage in the induction motor and consequently reduced torque ripplesPeer reviewe
