    IPv6 Operation for WAVE - Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments

    International audienceThe IEEE WAVE protocol suite is providing commu- nications services to applications in vehicular networks, by way of promising support for two protocol stacks: the Wave Short Message Protocol (WSMP) and IPv6. While WSMP is developed within the IEEE 1609 family of standards, the authors of this paper assert, that considerations for IPv6 operation for WAVE are less developed, and several issues are left unaddressed by the current IEEE 1609 specifications. This paper reviews these issues and analyzes the main challenges in providing proper IPv6 operation for WAVE networks

    ROUTE OPTIMIZATION IN NESTED MOBILE NETWORKS (NEMO) USING OLSR

    International audienceInternet edge mobility has been possible for a number of years: mobile IP[8], allows a host to change its point of at- tachment to the Internet and NEMO [6] allows the same functionality for a group of hosts along with a mobile router. The virtue of NEMO and mobile IP is transparency: a host remains identifiable through the same IP address, and traffic sent to that IP address will be tunneled to arrive at the intended node. NEMO allows "nested networks": a mobile network which attaches to another mobile network to arbitrary depth. However for each level of nesting, traffic is encap- sulated and tunneled to reach the destination. This leads to increased overhead (encapsulation) and to sub-optimal paths (tunneling without consideration for the actual net- work topology). In this paper, we investigate route-optimization in nested NEMO networks. We employ an ad-hoc routing protocol between mobile routers to ensure shortest routes when both source and destination for traffic is within the nested NEMO network. The mechanism also simplifies the requirements for route optimization when the source node is located outside of the nested NEMO network

    Temperature Dependence of Magnetophotoconductance in One-Dimensional Molecular Assembly of Hexabenzocoronene

    Temperature dependencies of transient photocharge and magnetophotoconductance effect of columnar self-assemblies of the hexabenzocoronene derivative (HBC-C14), which is a prospective one-dimensional photoconductor, presented different thermal activation processes for carrier generation and transportation, respectively. Thermal equilibrium between the low-lying short distance and high-lying long-distance geminate electron–hole (e–h) pairs is the origin for activation in carrier generation. The energy difference between these e–h pairs is estimated to be 7 meV, which was mainly due to the Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, the carrier transport with thermal activation was understood by the multiple trapping model. Carrier detrapping from localized states located in the band gap causes the thermal activation in the carrier transport. The shallow energy depth at the density peak of the localized state from the mobility edge (10 ± 3 meV) is a unique nature of HBC-C14 self-assemblies. A very narrow Gaussian distribution for density of the localized states was also clarified

    Study on the necessary survey days for energy intake in school children assessed by 7 day survey

    Theoretically, the longer the period of a nutrition survey, the more reliable the results. However, a long survey can impose a burden on subjects and cause the results to become inaccurate. For adults, a 3 non-consecutive day survey is usually recommended ; however, for school children, at least in Japan, it has not been determined whether this is necessary. In this study we conducted a survey of 7 days and tried to find the minimum number of days necessary to determine the energy intake. The subjects were about 300 children aged from 6 to 7, 10 to 11 and 13 to 14 years old in a city in the western part of Japan. The weighing method was used for the school lunch and other meals were surveyed by 24-recalling method. For the 6-7 year-old school children, guardians were asked to keep dietary records. The final number of subjects who were able to complete the 7-day survey was 139. Energy intakes for each weekday were not statistically different (p>0.05) and those for each weekend did not differ (p>0.05). Average energy intakes on weekdays were higher than those on weekend days in 10-11 and 13-14 year-old children. The average intakes of energy in 10-11 and 13-14 year-old children were lower than Japanese estimated energy requirements (EER). However, body weight of more than 90% of subjects was within the normal range. The results suggest that a survey of one weekday is reliable for all weekdays and that of one week-end day is reliable for any weekend day and also indicate the necessity of further studies of EER in rapidly growing children

    Vehicular Carriers for Big Data Transfers

    International audienceIn the latest years, Internet traffic has increased at a significantly faster pace than its capacity, preventing efficient bulk data transfers such as datacenter migrations and high-definition user-generated multimedia data. In this paper, we propose to take advantage of the existing worldwide road infrastructure as an offloading channel to help the legacy Internet assuage its burden. One of the motivations behind our work is that a significant share of the Internet traffic is elastic and tolerates a certain delay before consumption. Our results suggest that piggybacking data on vehicles can easily lead to network capacity in the petabyte range. Furthermore, such a strategy exceeds by far the performance of today's alternatives that, although yielding good performance levels, still rely on the legacy Internet and inherent then its intrinsic limitations. We show through a number of analyses that our proposal has the potential to obtain remarkable reductions in transfer delays while being economically affordable

    This paper describes an experimental evaluation of a multiservice ad hoc network, aimed to be interconnected with an infrastructure, operator-managed network. This network supports the efficient delivery of services, unicast and multicast, legacy and multimedia, to users connected in the ad hoc network. It contains the following functionalities: routing and delivery of unicast and multicast services; distributed QoS mechanisms to support service differentiation and resource control responsive to node mobility; security, charging, and rewarding mechanisms to ensure the correct behaviour of the users in the ad hoc network. This paper experimentally evaluates the performance of multiple mechanisms, and the influence and performance penalty introduced in the network, with the incremental inclusion of new functionalities. The performance results obtained in the different real scenarios may question the real usage of ad-hoc networks for more than a minimal number of hops with such a large number of functionalities deployed

    The Immune Response to Herpes Simplex Virus Encephalitis in Mice Is Modulated by Dietary Vitamin E

    Herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSE) is the most common fatal sporadic encephalitis in humans. HSE is primarily caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 infection of the brain. HSE results in increased levels of oxidative stress, including the production of reactive oxygen species, free radicals, and neuroinflammation. The most biologically active form of vitamin E (VE) is α-tocopherol (α-TOC). In cellular membranes, α-TOC prevents lipid peroxidation by scavenging free radicals and functioning as an antioxidant. Supplementation with VE has been shown to decrease immunosenescence, improve immune function, and may be neuroprotective. To determine how VE deficiency and VE supplementation would alter the pathogenesis of HSE, we placed weanling male BALB/cByJ mice on VE-deficient (VE-D), VE-adequate (VE-A), or 10× VE-supplemented diets for 4 wk, and then infected the mice intranasally with HSV-1. VE-D mice had more severe symptoms of encephalitis than VE-A mice, including weight loss, keratitis, hunched posture, and morbidity. VE-D mice had increased cytokine and chemokine expression in the brain and increased viral titers. In contrast, VE supplementation failed to decrease cytokine production and had no effect on viral titer. We demonstrated that adequate levels of VE are important in limiting HSE pathology and that 10× supplementation does not enhance protection
