The leading hadronic contribution to from lattice QCD with flavours of O() improved Wilson quarks
The comparison of the theoretical and experimental determinations of the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon constitutes one of the
strongest tests of the Standard Model at low energies. In this article, we
compute the leading hadronic contribution to using lattice QCD
simulations employing Wilson quarks. Gauge field ensembles at four different
lattice spacings and several values of the pion mass down to its physical value
are used. We apply the O() improvement programme with two discretizations of
the vector current to better constrain the approach to the continuum limit. The
electromagnetic current correlators are computed in the time-momentum
representation. In addition, we perform auxiliary calculations of the pion form
factor at timelike momenta in order to better constrain the tail of the
isovector correlator and to correct its dominant finite-size effect. For the
numerically dominant light-quark contribution, we have rescaled the lepton mass
by the pion decay constant computed on each lattice ensemble. We perform a
combined chiral and continuum extrapolation to the physical point, and our
final result is . It contains the contributions of quark-disconnected
diagrams, and the systematic error has been enlarged to account for the missing

Die Nutzungsintention als Prädiktor der realen Systemnutzung: eine quantitative Analyse
Systemnutzung stellt in der Nutzerakzeptanzforschung eine der wichtigsten abhängigen Variablen dar. In vielen Akzeptanzstudien ergeben sich jedoch Probleme bei ihrer Erhebung. Manche Forscher weichen daher auf eine Selbsteinschätzung der Nutzer bzgl. der System-nutzung aus, d.h. sie messen diese nicht auf Basis einer objektiv bestimmbaren Größe. Andere beschränken sich in ihren Studien auf die Nutzungsintention als abhängige Variable anstelle der Systemnutzung und stützen sich dabei implizit auf die Annahme, dass Nutzungs-intention ein geeigneter Prädiktor für Systemnutzung sei. Diese Annahme wird in diesem Beitrag auf Basis von Daten zweier Studien überprüft und bestätigt. Akzeptanzforschern kann daher empfohlen werden, mit Nutzungsintention als abhängiger Variable zu arbeiten. The hyperfine transition in light muonic atoms of odd Z
The hyperfine (hf) transition rates for muonic atoms have been re-measured
for select light nuclei, using neutron detectors to evaluate the time
dependence of muon capture. For F = 5.6 (2)
s for the hf transition rate, a value which is considerably more
accurate than previous measurements. Results are also reported for Na, Al, P,

Electroweak Gauge-Boson Production at Small q_T: Infrared Safety from the Collinear Anomaly
Using methods from effective field theory, we develop a novel, systematic
framework for the calculation of the cross sections for electroweak gauge-boson
production at small and very small transverse momentum q_T, in which large
logarithms of the scale ratio M_V/q_T are resummed to all orders. These cross
sections receive logarithmically enhanced corrections from two sources: the
running of the hard matching coefficient and the collinear factorization
anomaly. The anomaly leads to the dynamical generation of a non-perturbative
scale q_* ~ M_V e^{-const/\alpha_s(M_V)}, which protects the processes from
receiving large long-distance hadronic contributions. Expanding the cross
sections in either \alpha_s or q_T generates strongly divergent series, which
must be resummed. As a by-product, we obtain an explicit non-perturbative
expression for the intercept of the cross sections at q_T=0, including the
normalization and first-order \alpha_s(q_*) correction. We perform a detailed
numerical comparison of our predictions with the available data on the
transverse-momentum distribution in Z-boson production at the Tevatron and LHC.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figure
Recruitment methods and yield rates in a clinical trial of physical exercise for older adults with hypertension—HAEL Study: a study within a trial
Background:
Although the prevalence of hypertension is high in older adults, clinical trial recruitment is a challenge. Our main aim was to describe the HAEL Study recruitment methods and yield rates. The secondary objectives were to explore the reasons for exclusion and to describe the characteristics of the enrolled participants.
Methods:
This is a descriptive study within a trial. The HAEL Study was a Brazilian randomized two-center, parallel trial with an estimated sample of 184 participants. The recruitment strategy was based on four methods: electronic health records, word of mouth, print and electronic flyer, and press media. The yield rate was the ratio of the number of participants who underwent randomization to the total number of volunteers screened, calculated for overall, per recruitment method, by study center and by age group and sex. Additionally, we described the reasons for exclusion in the screening phase, as well as the demographic characteristics of those enrolled. The data are presented in absolute/relative frequencies and mean ± standard deviation.
Results:
A total of 717 individuals were screened, and 168 were randomized over 32 months. The yield rate was higher for word of mouth (30.1%) in the overall sample. However, press media contributed the most (39.9%) to the absolute number of participants randomized in the trial. The coordinating center and participating center differed in methods with the highest yield ratios and absolute numbers of randomized participants. The main reason for exclusion in the screening phase was due to the physically active status in those intending to participate in the study (61.5%). Out of 220 participants included, 52 were excluded mainly because they did not meet the eligibility criteria (26.9%). Most of the screened volunteers were women (60.2%) age 60–69 years (59.5%), and most of the randomized participants were Caucasian/white (78.0%).
Conclusions:
Multiple recruitment methods constituted effective strategies. We observed that approximately one of every four individuals screened was allocated to an intervention group. Even so, there were limitations in obtaining a representative sample of older Brazilian adults with hypertension. Data show an underrepresentation of race and age groups
Evidence for proton acceleration up to TeV energies based on VERITAS and Fermi-LAT observations of the Cas A SNR
We present a study of -ray emission from the core-collapse supernova
remnant Cas~A in the energy range from 0.1GeV to 10TeV. We used 65 hours of
VERITAS data to cover 200 GeV - 10 TeV, and 10.8 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT
data to cover 0.1-500 GeV. The spectral analysis of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data
shows a significant spectral curvature around GeV that is
consistent with the expected spectrum from pion decay. Above this energy, the
joint spectrum from \textit{Fermi}-LAT and VERITAS deviates significantly from
a simple power-law, and is best described by a power-law with spectral index of
with a cut-off energy of TeV. These
results, along with radio, X-ray and -ray data, are interpreted in the
context of leptonic and hadronic models. Assuming a one-zone model, we exclude
a purely leptonic scenario and conclude that proton acceleration up to at least
6 TeV is required to explain the observed -ray spectrum. From modeling
of the entire multi-wavelength spectrum, a minimum magnetic field inside the

A 2000 year long seasonal record of floods in the southern European Alps
International audienceKnowledge of past natural flood variability and controlling climate factors is of high value since it can be useful to refine projections of the future flood behavior under climate warming. In this context, we present a seasonally resolved 2000 year long flood frequency and intensity reconstruction from the southern Alpine slope (North Italy) using annually laminated (varved) lake sediments. Floods occurred predominantly during summer and autumn, whereas winter and spring events were rare. The all-season flood frequency and, particularly, the occurrence of summer events increased during solar minima, suggesting solar-induced circulation changes resembling negative conditions of the North Atlantic Oscillation as controlling atmospheric mechanism. Furthermore, the most extreme autumn events occurred during a period of warm Mediterranean sea surface temperature. Interpreting these results in regard to present climate change, our data set proposes for a warming scenario, a decrease in summer floods, but an increase in the intensity of autumn floods at the South-Alpine slope
Direct measurement of stellar angular diameters by the VERITAS Cherenkov Telescopes
The angular size of a star is a critical factor in determining its basic
properties. Direct measurement of stellar angular diameters is difficult: at
interstellar distances stars are generally too small to resolve by any
individual imaging telescope. This fundamental limitation can be overcome by
studying the diffraction pattern in the shadow cast when an asteroid occults a
star, but only when the photometric uncertainty is smaller than the noise added
by atmospheric scintillation. Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes used for
particle astrophysics observations have not generally been exploited for
optical astronomy due to the modest optical quality of the mirror surface.
However, their large mirror area makes them well suited for such
high-time-resolution precision photometry measurements. Here we report two
occultations of stars observed by the VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes with
millisecond sampling, from which we are able to provide a direct measurement of
the occulted stars' angular diameter at the milliarcsecond scale.
This is a resolution never achieved before with optical measurements and
represents an order of magnitude improvement over the equivalent lunar
occultation method. We compare the resulting stellar radius with empirically
derived estimates from temperature and brightness measurements, confirming the
latter can be biased for stars with ambiguous stellar classifications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Astronom
D-cycloserine augmentation of exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and posttraumatic stress disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual participant data
Importance: Whether and under which conditions D-cycloserine (DCS) augments the effects of exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and posttraumatic stress disorders is unclear. Objective: To clarify whether DCS is superior to placebo in augmenting the effects of cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and posttraumatic stress disorders and to evaluate whether antidepressants interact with DCS and the effect of potential moderating variables. Data Sources: PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to February 10, 2016. Reference lists of previous reviews and meta-analyses and reports of randomized clinical trials were also checked. Study Selection: Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were (1) double-blind randomized clinical trials of DCS as an augmentation strategy for exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy and (2) conducted in humans diagnosed as having specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder. Data Extraction and Synthesis: Raw data were obtained from the authors and quality controlled. Data were ranked to ensure a consistent metric across studies (score range, 0-100). We used a 3-level multilevel model nesting repeated measures of outcomes within participants, who were nested within studies. Results: Individual participant data were obtained for 21 of 22 eligible trials, representing 1047 of 1073 eligible participants. When controlling for antidepressant use, participants receiving DCS showed greater improvement from pretreatment to posttreatment (mean difference, -3.62; 95% CI, -0.81 to -6.43; P = .01; d = -0.25) but not from pretreatment to midtreatment (mean difference, -1.66; 95% CI, -4.92 to 1.60; P = .32; d = -0.14) or from pretreatment to follow-up (mean difference, -2.98, 95% CI, -5.99 to 0.03; P = .05; d = -0.19). Additional analyses showed that participants assigned to DCS were associated with lower symptom severity than those assigned to placebo at posttreatment and at follow-up. Antidepressants did not moderate the effects of DCS. None of the prespecified patient-level or study-level moderators was associated with outcomes. Conclusions and Relevance: D-cycloserine is associated with a small augmentation effect on exposure-based therapy. This effect is not moderated by the concurrent use of antidepressants. Further research is needed to identify patient and/or therapy characteristics associated with DCS response.2018-05-0
