Statistical inference for association studies in the presence of binary outcome misclassification
In biomedical and public health association studies, binary outcome variables
may be subject to misclassification, resulting in substantial bias in effect
estimates. The feasibility of addressing binary outcome misclassification in
regression models is often hindered by model identifiability issues. In this
paper, we characterize the identifiability problems in this class of models as
a specific case of "label switching" and leverage a pattern in the resulting
parameter estimates to solve the permutation invariance of the complete data
log-likelihood. Our proposed algorithm in binary outcome misclassification
models does not require gold standard labels and relies only on the assumption
that outcomes are correctly classified at least 50% of the time. A label
switching correction is applied within estimation methods to recover unbiased
effect estimates and to estimate misclassification rates. Open source software
is provided to implement the proposed methods. We give a detailed simulation
study for our proposed methodology and apply these methods to data from the
2020 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS).Comment: 37 pages, 4 figure
Discovery of seven T Tauri stars and a brown dwarf candidate in the nearby TW Hydrae Association
We report the discovery of five T Tauri star systems, two of which are
resolved binaries, in the vicinity of the nearest known region of recent star
formation, the TW Hydrae Association. The newly discovered systems display the
same signatures of youth (namely high X-ray flux, large Li abundance and strong
chromospheric activity) and the same proper motion as the original five
members. These similarities firmly establish the group as a bona fide T Tauri
association, unique in its proximity to Earth and its complete isolation from
any known molecular clouds.
At an age of ~10 Myr and a distance of ~50 pc, the association members are
excellent candidates for future studies of circumstellar disk dissipation and
the formation of brown dwarfs and planets. Indeed, as an example, our speckle
imaging revealed a faint, very likely companion 2" north of CoD-33 7795 (TWA
5). Its color and brightness suggest a spectral type ~M8.5 which, at an age of

The Automorphism Group of a Finite p-Group is Almost Always a p-Group
Many common finite p-groups admit automorphisms of order coprime to p, and
when p is odd, it is reasonably difficult to find finite p-groups whose
automorphism group is a p-group. Yet the goal of this paper is to prove that
the automorphism group of a finite p-group is almost always a p-group. The
asymptotics in our theorem involve fixing any two of the following parameters
and letting the third go to infinity: the lower p-length, the number of
generators, and p. The proof of this theorem depends on a variety of topics:
counting subgroups of a p-group; analyzing the lower p-series of a free group
via its connection with the free Lie algebra; counting submodules of a module

The Relationship between Time Perspective and Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose among people with Type 1 Diabetes
Background. Self-monitoring of blood glucose helps people with type 1 diabetes to maintain glycaemic control and reduce the risk of complications. However, adherence to blood glucose monitoring is often suboptimal. Purpose. Like many health behaviours, self-monitoring of blood glucose involves exerting effort in the present in order to achieve future benefits. As such, the present research explored whether individual differences in time perspective – specifically, the extent to which people have a balanced time perspective – are associated with the frequency with which people with type 1 diabetes monitor their blood glucose and, thus, maintain glycaemic control. Methods. Adults with type 1 diabetes completed measures of time perspective, feelings associated with monitoring, attitudes toward monitoring, and trait self-control. Objective data regarding the frequency with which participants monitored their blood glucose levels and their long-term glycaemic control was extracted from their medical records. Results. Hierarchical regression analyses and tests of indirect effects (N = 129) indicated that having a more balanced time perspective was associated with more frequent monitoring of blood glucose, and as a result, better glycaemic control. Further analyses (N =158) also indicated that there was an indirect relationship between balanced time perspective and monitoring of blood glucose via the feelings that participants associated with monitoring and their subsequent attitudes toward monitoring. Conclusions. These findings point to the importance and relevance of time perspective for understanding health-related behaviour and may help to inform interventions designed to promote self-monitoring of blood glucose in people with type 1 diabetes
Genomic and physiological variability within Group II (non-proteolytic) Clostridium botulinum
BACKGROUND: Clostridium botulinum is a group of four physiologically and phylogenetically distinct bacteria that produce botulinum neurotoxin. While studies have characterised variability between strains of Group I (proteolytic) C. botulinum, the genetic and physiological variability and relationships between strains within Group II (non-proteolytic) C. botulinum are not well understood. In this study the genome of Group II strain C. botulinum Eklund 17B (NRP) was sequenced and used to construct a whole genome DNA microarray. This was used in a comparative genomic indexing study to compare the relatedness of 43 strains of Group II C. botulinum (14 type B, 24 type E and 5 type F). These results were compared with characteristics determined from physiological tests. RESULTS: Whole genome indexing showed that strains of Group II C. botulinum isolated from a wide variety of environments over more than 75 years clustered together indicating the genetic background of Group II C. botulinum is stable. Further analysis showed that strains forming type B or type F toxin are closely related with only toxin cluster genes targets being unique to either type. Strains producing type E toxin formed a separate subset. Carbohydrate fermentation tests supported the observation that type B and F strains form a separate subset to type E strains. All the type F strains and most of type B strains produced acid from amylopectin, amylose and glycogen whereas type E strains did not. However, these two subsets did not differ strongly in minimum growth temperature or maximum NaCl concentration for growth. No relationship was found between tellurite resistance and toxin type despite all the tested type B and type F strains carrying tehB, while the sequence was absent or diverged in all type E strains. CONCLUSIONS: Although Group II C. botulinum form a tight genetic group, genomic and physiological analysis indicates there are two distinct subsets within this group. All type B strains and type F strains are in one subset and all type E strains in the other
Tuberculosis incidence correlates with sunshine : an ecological 28-year time series study
Birmingham is the largest UK city after London, and central Birmingham has an annual tuberculosis incidence of 80 per 100,000. We examined seasonality and sunlight as drivers of tuberculosis incidence. Hours of sunshine are seasonal, sunshine exposure is necessary for the production of vitamin D by the body and vitamin D plays a role in the host response to tuberculosis.
Methods:
We performed an ecological study that examined tuberculosis incidence in Birmingham from Dec 1981 to Nov 2009, using publicly-available data from statutory tuberculosis notifications, and related this to the seasons and hours of sunshine (UK Meteorological Office data) using unmeasured component models.
Results:
There were 9,739 tuberculosis cases over the study period. There was strong evidence for seasonality, with notifications being 24.1% higher in summer than winter (p<0.001). Winter dips in sunshine correlated with peaks in tuberculosis incidence six months later (4.7% increase in incidence for each 100 hours decrease in sunshine, p<0.001).
Discussion and Conclusion:
A potential mechanism for these associations includes decreased vitamin D levels with consequent impaired host defence arising from reduced sunshine exposure in winter. This is the longest time series of any published study and our use of statutory notifications means this data is essentially complete. We cannot, however, exclude the possibility that another factor closely correlated with the seasons, other than sunshine, is responsible. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight depends not only on total hours of sunshine but also on multiple individual factors. Our results should therefore be considered hypothesis-generating. Confirmation of a potential causal relationship between winter vitamin D deficiency and summer peaks in tuberculosis incidence would require a randomized-controlled trial of the effect of vitamin D supplementation on future tuberculosis incidence
Monomeric PcrA helicase processively unwinds plasmid lengths of DNA in the presence of the initiator protein RepD
The helicase PcrA unwinds DNA during asymmetric replication of plasmids, acting with an initiator protein, in our case RepD. Detailed kinetics of PcrA activity were measured using bulk solution and a single-molecule imaging technique to investigate the oligomeric state of the active helicase complex, its processivity and the mechanism of unwinding. By tethering either DNA or PcrA to a microscope coverslip surface, unwinding of both linear and natural circular plasmid DNA by PcrA/RepD was followed in real-time using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Visualization was achieved using a fluorescent single-stranded DNA-binding protein. The single-molecule data show that PcrA, in combination with RepD, can unwind plasmid lengths of DNA in a single run, and that PcrA is active as a monomer. Although the average rate of unwinding was similar in single-molecule and bulk solution assays, the single-molecule experiments revealed a wide distribution of unwinding speeds by different molecules. The average rate of unwinding was several-fold slower than the PcrA translocation rate on single-stranded DNA, suggesting that DNA unwinding may proceed via a partially passive mechanism. However, the fastest dsDNA unwinding rates measured in the single-molecule unwinding assays approached the PcrA translocation speed measured on ssDNA
A Spatially Resolved `Inside-out' Outburst of IP Pegasi
We present a comprehensive photometric dataset taken over the entire outburst
of the eclipsing dwarf nova IP Peg in September/October 1997. Analysis of the
lightcurves taken over the long rise to the peak-of-outburst shows conclusively
that the outburst started near the centre of the disc and moved outwards. This
is the first dataset that spatially resolves such an outburst. The dataset is
consistent with the idea that long rise times are indicative of such
`inside-out' outbursts. We show how the thickness and the radius of the disc,
along with the mass transfer rate change over the whole outburst. In addition,
we show evidence of the secondary and the irradiation thereof. We discuss the
possibility of spiral shocks in the disc; however we find no conclusive

Towards informed and multi-faceted wildlife trade interventions
International trade in wildlife is a key threat to biodiversity conservation. CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, is the primary mechanism for controlling international wildlife trade and seeks to ensure it is sustainable, relying on trade bans and controls. However, there has been little comprehensive review of the effectiveness of CITES. Here, we review typical and atypical approaches taken to regulate wildlife trade in CITES and assert that it boasts few successes. We attribute this to: non-compliance, an over reliance on regulation, lack of knowledge of listed species, ignorance of the reality of market forces, and influence among CITES actors. To more effectively manage trade we argue that interventions need to go beyond regulation and should be multi-faceted, reflecting the complexity of wildlife trade. To inform such interventions we assert an intensive research effort is needed and we outline six key research areas: (1) factors undermining wildlife trade governance at the national level, (2) determining sustainable harvest rates for CITES species, (3) gaining the buy-in of local communities in implementing CITES, (4) supply and demand based market interventions, (5) means of quantifying illicit trade, and (6) political processes and influence within CITES
Channel Interference in a Quasi Ballistic Aharonov-Bohm Experiment
New experiments are presented on the transmission of electron waves through a
2DEG (2 dimensional electron gas) ring with a gate on top of one of the
branches. Magnetoconductance oscillations are observed, and the phase of the
Aharanov-Bohm signal alternates between 0 and pi as the gate voltage is
scanned. A Fourier transform of the data reveals a dominant period in the
voltage which corresponds to the energy spacing between successive transverse
modes.A theoretical model including random phase shifts between successive
