    Risico inventarisatie van schade door ethyleen bij tussenplanten : effecten van tomaat op tussengeplante komkommer en tomaat

    Bij een herfstteelt van trostomaten op goten is het aantrekkelijk om in de winter tomaten of komkommers tussen te planten. Door het grotendeels weg laten zakken van het oude gewas onder de goot en het jonge gewas op de goot te zetten, kan de teeltwisseling met een minder groot gat in de productie verlopen. Omdat trostomaten aan de plant volledig doorkleuren bestaat in principe de kans dat de ethyleen die gevormd wordt door de rijpende vruchten schade kan geven aan het jonge tussengeplante gewas. Bij tomaat is in 2000 op enkele bedrijven trosrui geconstateerd bij het tussengeplante toma tengewas. Hierbij werd gedacht aan mogelijke ethyleenschade. Ethyleen is een gasvormige, planteigen stof die als groeiregulator (hormoon) bij zeer veel verschillende fysiologische processen betrokken is. Het beïnvloedt o.a. bloei, bladgroei en lengtegroei van de spruit (Abeles et al., 1992). Als er externe bronnen zijn van ethyleen dan is er al snel sprake van schade. Symptomen van ethyleenschade zijn o.a. afwijkende kiemplanten, bloemrui, trosrui, afwijkende bladstand, bladval en stagnatie van de vegetatieve groei. Ernstige ethyleenschade uit zich direct in bladvergeling, maar soms treedt er verdekt wat lichte schade op die toch blijkt te leiden tot productiederving. Ethyleen komt in de buitenlucht standaard voor in een concentratie van 1 – 5 ppb (Abeles et al., 1992), maar kan in stedelijke gebieden tot wel 100 keer hoger worden. Ethyleen kan dus als luchtvervuiling een kas binnenkomen, of ophopen ten gevolge van een slecht afgestelde brander (Hanan, 1973, Esmeijer, 1999). Een andere bron van ethyleen is een gewas met doorkleurende vruchten zoals tomaat (Reid, 1988). In het geval van tussenplanten in de winterperiode zou dit problemen kunnen opleveren. In het verleden werd ook wel tussengeplant, maar leidde dit nooit tot problemen, omdat de vruchten los geoogst werden en nooit zo lang doorgekleurd in het gewas aanwezig bleven. Bovendien werd er alleen tussengeplant in de zomermaanden als er relatief veel gelucht werd. Bij tussenplanten in de winter van komkommers bij tomaat gaat het om een situatie waarin de luchtramen vaak gesloten zijn en er weinig licht beschikbaar is. De meeste gewassen zijn in die omstandigheden gevoelig voor schade, en naar verwachting zullen jonge, snel groeiende komkommerplanten op die regel geen uitzondering zijn

    Dietary supplementation with multiple micronutrients: No beneficial effects in pediatric cystic fibrosis patients

    AbstractBackgroundCystic fibrosis (CF) patients are subjected to increased oxidative stress due to chronic pulmonary inflammation and recurrent infections. Additionally, these patients have diminished skeletal muscle performance and exercise capacity. We hypothesize that a mixture of multiple micronutrients could have beneficial effects on pulmonary function and muscle performance.MethodsA double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, cross-over trial with a mixture of multiple micronutrients (ML1) was performed in 22 CF patients (12.9±2.5 yrs) with predominantly mild lung disease. Anthropometric measures, pulmonary function, exercise performance by bicycle ergometry, muscular strength and vitamins A and E were determined.ResultsAnalysis was performed using the paired Student t-test comparing the change in each parameter during ML1 and placebo. Plasma vitamin E and A levels increased during ML1 when compared to placebo. However, no significant difference between the effect of the ML1 or placebo was observed neither for FEV1, FVC, anthropometry, nor for the parameters for muscle performance.ConclusionsThe micronutrient mixture was not superior to placebo with respect to changes in pulmonary function or muscle performance in pediatric CF patients, despite a significant increase in plasma vitamin E concentrations

    Prediction of fetal lung immaturity using gestational age, patient characteristics and fetal lung maturity tests: a probabilistic approach

    Objectives: The lecithin/sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio and the lamellar body count (LBC) can be used to predict respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Design: We performed a retrospective cohort study among consecutive women who underwent amniotic fluid sampling for the assessment of fetal lung maturity. Logistic regression was used to construct models for the prediction of RDS in three gestational age categories, with models based on clinical characteristics only, clinical characteristics and the LBC, and on clinical characteristics and L/S ratio. Results: When amniotic fluid was collected <30 weeks, the specificity of the LBC was 30% and the sensitivity 100%. Addition of the L/S ratio increased the specifity to 60%, for a sensitivity of 100%. When amniocentesis was performed between 30 and 33 weeks, addition of the L/S ratio only marginally improved the performance of the LBC. Conclusions: At a gestational age <30 weeks, the L/S ratio has additional value over the LBC. Above 30 weeks of gestation, single use of the LBC seems sufficient.L. D. E. Wijnberger, M. de Kleine, H.     Chance of aneurysm in patients suspected of SAH who have a ‘negative’ CT scan but a ‘positive’ lumbar puncture

    In patients with sudden severe headache and a negative computed tomography (CT) scan, a lumbar puncture (LP) is performed to rule in or out a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), but this procedure is under debate. In a hospital-based series of 30 patients with sudden headache, a negative CT scan but a positive LP (defined as detection of bilirubin >0.05 at wavelength 458 nm), we studied the chance of harbouring an aneurysm and the clinical outcome. Aneurysms were found in none of both patients who presented within 3 days, in 8 of the 18 (44%) who presented within 4–7 days and in 5 of the 10 (50%) who presented within 8–14 days. Of the 13 patients with an aneurysm, 3 (23%) had poor outcome. In patients who present late after sudden headache, the yield in terms of aneurysms is high in those who have a positive lumbar puncture. In patients with an aneurysm as cause of the positive lumbar puncture, outcome is in the same range as in SAH patients admitted in good clinical condition

    Increased serum levels of MRP-8/14 in type 1 diabetes induce an increased expression of CD11b and an enhanced adhesion of circulating monocytes to fibronectin

    The recruitment of monocytes from the bloodstream is crucial in the accumulation of macrophages and dendritic cells in type 1 diabetic pancreases. Adhesion via integrins to endothelium and extracellular matrix proteins, such as fibronectin (FN), and the production of myeloid-related protein (MRP)-8, -14, and -8/14 by recently transmigrated monocytes are thought to be instrumental in such recruitment. We determined the FN-adhesive capacity and integrin expression of monocytes of type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients and related them to the subjects' serum levels of MRP-8, -14 and -8/14. Monocytes of type 1 diabetic patients displayed an increased adhesion to fibronectin in comparison with type 2 patients and healthy control subjects but had a normal expression of the FN binding integrins CD29, CD49a, CD49d, and CD49e (although CD11b and CD18 expression was increased). MRP-8/14, which was increased in the sera of type 1 diabetic patients, induced healthy donor monocytes to adhere to FN and upregulate CD11b expression in a dosage-dependent manner. The observed MRP-induced increased adhesion of monocytes to FN and upregulation of CD11b most likely contributed to a facilitated accumulation of monocytes and monocyte-derived cells at the site of inflammation, in this case the pancreatic islets

    Immunohistochemical, morphological and ultrastructural resemblance between dendritic cells and folliculo-stellate cells in normal human and rat anterior pituitaries

    Immunolabeling of cryo-sections of human anterior pituitaries obtained at autopsy, and of cryo-sections of freshly prepared rat anterior pituitaries, with a panel of monoclonal antibodies against markers of the monocyte/dendritic cell/macrophage lineage, reveals in both species a characteristic pattern of immunopositive cells, among which many cells with dendritic phenotype are found. Cells characterized by marker expression of MHC-class II determinants and a dendritic morphology are present in both human and rat anterior pituitary. Markers characteristic of dendritic cells such as the L25 antigen and the OX62 antigen were present in anterior pituitaries from human and rat respectively. The population of MHC-class II expressing dendritic cells of the rat anterior pituitary is compared at the ultrastructural level with the folliculo-stellate cell population, which cell type has been previously characterized by its distinctive ultrastructure and immunopositivity for the S100 protein. Using immune-electron microscopy of rat anterior pituitaries fixed with periodate-lysine-paraformaldehyde, we were able to distinguish non-granulated cells expressing MHC-class II determinants, whereas no MHC-class II expression was found in the granulated endocrine cells. Using double immunolabeling of cryo-sections of these rat AP with 25 nm and 15 nm gold labels, we demonstrated an overlap between the populations of MHC-class II-expressing and S100 protein-expressing cells. Furthermore, MHC-class II-expressing and S100-positive cells showed ultrastructural characteristics that have been previously ascribed to folliculo-stellate cells.     Premature ovarian failure and ovarian autoimmunity

    Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as a syndrome characterized by menopause before the age of 40 yr. The patients suffer from anovulation and hypoestrogenism. Approximately 1% of women will experience menopause before the age of 40 yr. POF is a heterogeneous disorder with a multicausal pathogenesis involving chromosomal, genetic, enzymatic, infectious, and iatrogenic causes. There remains, however, a group of POF patients without a known etiology, the so-called "idiopathic" form. An autoimmune etiology is hypothesized for the POF cases with a concomitant Addison's disease and/or oophoritis. It is concluded in this review that POF in association with adrenal autoimmunity and/or Addison's disease (2-10% of the idiopathic POF patients) is indeed an autoimmune disease. The following evidence warrants this view: 1) The presence of autoantibodies to steroid-producing cells in these patients; 2) The characterization of shared autoantigens between adrenal and ovarian steroid-producing cells; 3) The histological picture of the ovaries of such cases (lymphoplasmacellular infiltrate around steroid-producing cells); 4) The existence of various autoimmune animal models for this syndrome, which underlines the autoimmune nature of the disease. There is some circumstantial evidence for an autoimmune pathogenesis in idiopathic POF patients in the absence of adrenal autoimmunity or Addison's disease. Arguments in support of this are: 1) The presence of cellular immune abnormalities in this POF patient group reminiscent of endocrine autoimmune diseases such as IDDM, Graves' disease, and Addison's disease; 2) The more than normal association with IDDM and myasthenia gravis. Data on the presence of various ovarian autoantibodies and anti-receptor antibodies in these patients are, however, inconclusive and need further evaluation. A strong argument against an autoimmune pathogenesis of POF in these patients is the nearly absent histological confirmation (the presence of an oophoritis) in these cases (< 3%). However, in animal models using ZP immunization, similar follicular depletion and fibrosis (as in the POF women) can be detected.
