Improved procedure for determining the ductility of buildings under seismic loads

Displacement ductility is a parameter that characterizes the seismic response of structures. Moreover, displacement ductility can be used in order to determine whether a structural design, performed according to a specific seismic code or not, may achieve the main goal of the seismic design: to develop energy dissipation in a stable manner. Determination of displacement ductility is not an easy task, because the structural response usually does not show a clear location of the points that define yield and ultimate displacements. In this paper, some of the main procedures for ductility displacement are revised and compared, and then improvements are performed to such procedures in order to compute the displacement ductility. A new procedure is then introduced, leading to determine the ultimate displacement using the seismic collapse threshold and the yield displacement, achieving the balance of dissipated energy. The procedure has been used to calculate displacement ductility of reinforced concrete framed buildings.Peer Reviewe

Dificultades de aprendizaje sobre sistemática biológica en estudiantes de educación

Las dificultades que presentan los estudiantes para el aprendizaje de las ciencias deben ser motivo de constante revisión para el re-modelaje de la acción docente. Por ello, el trabajo se centró en identificar las dificultades u obstáculos epistemológicos sobre sistemática biológica en estudiantesde educación de la Universidad de Los Andes. La metodología fue de tipo mixta con modalidad descriptiva para 22 estudiantes del quinto semestre; se usó un test mixto aplicado como test y re-test para recoger datos. Las conclusiones exponen: los obstáculos encontrados son la experiencia básica,conocimiento general, obstáculo lingüístico y el pragmático; el test diseñado resultó eficaz pues permitió evidenciar los obstáculos en los estudiantes; la metodología de test y re-test fue fundamental para conocer la consistencia y jerarquía de las dificultades halladas

Valoración y recuperación de la Biblioteca Central de la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, patrimonio mundial venezolano

Gracias a la flexibilidad que permiten los elementos arquitectónicos modernos, se desarrollará un nuevo diseño del programa arquitectónico para la adecuación del edificio de la Biblioteca Central de la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, tomando en cuenta sus valores para una conservación, rehabilitación y recuperación respecto a las necesidades de una biblioteca siglo XXI, con la idea de convertir la biblioteca en el corazón del conjunto central y que en términos urbanos no solo tenga excentricidad por su color y volumen sino que también obtenga reconocimiento por su diseño interior. Para llegar a esta propuesta implementando tecnologías de la era digital y pensando en suplir necesidades espaciales a futuro, se tomó como ejemplo la biblioteca central de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana la cual en su última re funcionalización se encargó de distribuir espacios y optimizarlos para sus usuarios, según las necesidades que se venían presentando, incluyendo el reforzamiento estructural que asumió hace algunos años. El edificio de la Biblioteca Central es la construcción de Villanueva más atrayente en todo el campus universitario, por su imponente color rojo y altura que alcanza los 12 pisos, es un edificio emblemático y característico que a pesar de que no tiene el mismo reconocimiento internacional que las demás edificaciones que hacen parte del gran “Conjunto Central”, sí tiene una amplia incidencia en la población universitaria, por su ubicación, por su programa arquitectónico, por sus funciones, por el diseño de los espacios y las plantas libres y porque además en el se conservan las colecciones de libros más antiguos del país, fue gracias a la Biblioteca que se creó la Universidad Central de Venezuela. Es un edificio de carácter público que, a pesar de sus virtudes arquitectónicas y declaratorias patrimoniales, ha sufrido constantes re funcionalizaciones e incluso intentos de restauración que han afectado el funcionamiento original del edificio, donde se deben tener en cuenta los requerimientos de una biblioteca siglo XXI para que se suplan las necesidades de toda la población universitaria, profesores, estudiantes, empleados y visitantes diarios. Teniendo en cuanta todos estos aspectos se quiere llegar a una propuesta arquitectónica que enfatice la conservación del bien patrimonial y se adecue de acuerdo con las necesidades estudiantiles actuales y futuras.Thanks to the flexibility that modern architectural elements allow, a new design of the architectural program for the adaptation of the building of the Central Library of the University City of Caracas will be developed, taking into account its values ​​for conservation, rehabilitation and recovery with respect to the needs of a 21st century library, with the idea of ​​convert the library into the heart of the central assembly and in urban terms not only have eccentricity for its color and volume, also get recognition for its interior design.      In order to arrive at this proposal, implementing technologies from the digital era and thinking about meeting spatial needs in the future, the central library of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana was taken as an example. In its last re-functionalization, it was responsible for distributing spaces and optimizing them for its users, according to the needs that had been presented, including the structural reinforcement that it assumed a few years ago.      The Central Library is Villanueva's most attractive building throughout the university campus, due to its imposing red color and height that reaches 12 floors, it's an emblematic and characteristic building that although it does not have the same international recognition as the other buildings that are part of the great "Central Assembly", does have a wide impact on the university population, it's location, it's architectural program, it's functions, the design of spaces and free plants and because The oldest collections of books in the country are preserved, it was thanks to the Library that the Central University of Venezuela was created.       It is a building of public character that, in spite of its architectural virtues and patrimonial declarations, has undergone constant re functionalizations and even attempts of restoration that have affected the original functioning of the building, where the requirements of a 21st century library must be taken into account so that the needs of the entire university population, teachers, students, employees and daily visitors are met. Formación científica de docentes y sus obstáculos epistemológicos sobre clasificación biológica

La formación de docentes de ciencias es fundamental en nuestros días, ya no por la sola necesidad de desarrollar la ciencia, sino por cimentar las bases éticas de una ciencia socialmente más responsable con la diversidad del planeta. Por esto, el trabajo se centró en evidenciar los obstáculosepistemológicos sobre clasificación biológica en estudiantes de docencia en la Universidad de Los Andes. La metodología fue cualitativa, trabajando con estudiantes del séptimo semestre y usando la entrevista semi-estructurada. Las conclusiones indican que: los docentes en formación carecen de una sólida base teórico-práctica; los obstáculos hallados fueron la experiencia básica, el conocimiento general, el lingüístico y el pragmático; el obstáculo más importante de superar es el lingüístico

The seismic design is based on the results of the structures elastic analysis, even though now days the nonlinear analysis is increasingly accessible. To perform the seismic analysis of structures that are modeled with elastic behavior, but known to venture into the plastic behavior, the standards establish the reduction of the elastic design spectra by the use of reduction factors, formulated essentially on the basis of the engineering judgment. This paper proposes a strategy to obtain response reduction factors, based on the results of non-linear analysis of soil response and structural systems with a degree of freedom, along with the nonlinear response of multiple grade of freedom framed structural systems by armed concrete, for the specific spectra of Venezuela. The results of response reductions factors were greater than the current values of response reduction prescribed by the Venezuelan seismic code, which can favorably lead to a displacement-based design instead strength-based design

Para realizar el análisis sísmico de estructuras que se modelan con comportamiento elástico, pero que se conoce incursionarán en comportamiento plástico, las normas prescriben la reducción de los espectros elásticos de diseño mediante el uso de factores de reducción de respuesta, formulados éstos esencialmente sobre la base del juicio ingenieril. En este trabajo se propone una metodología para obtener los factores de reducción de respuesta, con base en los resultados del análisis no lineal de la respuesta del suelo y de sistemas estructurales de un grado de libertad, conjuntamente con la respuesta no lineal de sistemas estructurales de múltiples grados de libertad aporticadas de concreto armado, para las formas espectrales de Venezuela. Los resultados obtenidos son mayores que los actuales valores de los factores de reducción de respuesta contemplados en la norma sismorresistente venezolana, lo cual puede conducir favorablemente a un diseño por desplazamientos y no por resistencia

Artificial neural networks model: Neuropsychological variables and their relationship with body fat percentage in adults

Background: There is a growing interest to understand the neural functions and substrates of complex cognitive processes related to Obesity (OB). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being applied, specifically the perceptron model of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in non-communicable chronic diseases, to identify with greater certainty the connective factors (synaptic networks) between the input variables and the output variables associated. Objective: Identify the synaptic weights of the ANN whose input variables are the executive functions (EF) and healthy lifestyles as predictors of Body Fat Percentage (BFP) in a group of adult subjects with different levels of BFP. Methods: The Neuropsychological Battery (BANFE-2) and the Overeating Questionnaire (OQ) were administered to 40 participants aged between 18 and 38 years. BFP was measured using a RENPHO ES-24M Smart Body Composition Scale. The perceptron ANN model with ten trials was applied with a multilayer-perceptron. Results: The ANN showed that the sensory variables with greater synaptic weight for BFP were Stroop A and B Errors and Successes of BANFE-2, and OQ scales Rationalizations and Healthy Habits. Conclusions: ANN proved to be important in the simultaneous analysis of neuropsychological and healthy lifestyle data for the analysis of OB prevention and treatment by identifying the variables that are closely related
