ANALYSING THE CAPACITY OF A TRANSPORTATION NETWORK. A GENERAL THEORETICAL APPROACH
Estimation of transportation network capacity is important in analysing network performance. In the existing literature, the capacity of a network is defined in conditional terms as a theoretical construct called âreserve capacityâ. This may be limited because, when considering local land-use development, the hypothetical uniform increase in O-D flows is not always realistic. This paper, introducing the concept of âcapacity functionâ, proposes a generalized concept of road network capacity which does not require information on either current O-D demand or the corresponding growth trend. Attention focuses on deterministic and stationary situations in which only one path is available for each O-D pair. Some examples regarding simple study cases demonstrate the capacity of this approach to solve problems and, consequently, to contribute to the analysis of network performance
Quark-antiquark potential in defect conformal field theory
We consider antiparallel Wilson lines in N = 4 super Yang-Mills in the presence of a codimension-1 defect. We compute the Wilson linesâ expectation value both at weak coupling, in the gauge theory, and at strong coupling, by finding the string configurations which are dual to this operator. These configurations display a Gross-Ooguri transition between a connected, U-shaped string phase and a phase in which the string breaks into two disconnected surfaces. We analyze in detail the critical configurations separating the two phases and compare the string result with the gauge theory one in a certain double scaling limit
The effects of a revised Be e-capture rate on solar neutrino fluxes
The electron-capture rate on Be is the main production channel for Li
in several astrophysical environments. Theoretical evaluations have to account
for not only the nuclear interaction, but also the processes in the plasma
where Be ions and electrons interact. In the past decades several estimates
were presented, pointing out that the theoretical uncertainty in the rate is in
general of few percents. In the framework of fundamental solar physics, we
consider here a recent evaluation for the Be+e rate, not used up to now
in the estimate of neutrino fluxes. We analysed the effects of the new
assumptions on Standard Solar Models (SSMs) and compared the results obtained
by adopting the revised Be+e rate to those obtained by the one reported
in a widely used compilation of reaction rates (ADE11). We found that new SSMs
yield a maximum difference in the efficiency of the Be channel of about
-4\% with respect to what is obtained with the previously adopted rate. This
fact affects the production of neutrinos from B, increasing the relative
flux up to a maximum of 2.7\%. Negligible variations are found for the physical
and chemical properties of the computed solar models. The agreement with the
SNO measurements of the neutral current component of the B neutrino flux is

On the Origin of the Early Solar System Radioactivities. Problems with the AGB and Massive Star Scenarios
Recent improvements in stellar models for intermediate-mass and massive stars
are recalled, together with their expectations for the synthesis of radioactive
nuclei of lifetime Myr, in order to re-examine the origins
of now extinct radioactivities, which were alive in the solar nebula. The
Galactic inheritance broadly explains most of them, especially if -process
nuclei are produced by neutron star merging according to recent models.
Instead, Al, Ca, Cs and possibly Fe require
nucleosynthesis events close to the solar formation. We outline the persisting
difficulties to account for these nuclei by Intermediate Mass Stars (2
M/M). Models of their final stages now
predict the ubiquitous formation of a C reservoir as a neutron capture
source; hence, even in presence of Al production from Deep Mixing or Hot
Bottom Burning, the ratio Al/Pd remains incompatible with
measured data, with a large excess in Pd. This is shown for two recent
approaches to Deep Mixing. Even a late contamination by a Massive Star meets
problems. In fact, inhomogeneous addition of Supernova debris predicts
non-measured excesses on stable isotopes. Revisions invoking specific low-mass
supernovae and/or the sequential contamination of the pre-solar molecular cloud
might be affected by similar problems, although our conclusions here are
weakened by our schematic approach to the addition of SN ejecta. The limited
parameter space remaining to be explored for solving this puzzle is discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication on Ap

Di converso le esigenze di tutela dell\u2019interesse pubblico, persa definitivamente la capacit\ue0 di snaturare il modello civilistico tipico, rimangono extrasociali, confinate nella fase a monte dell\u2019evidenza pubblica. Per apprezzare compiutamente la portata di tali approdi, l\u2019analisi del Testo unico \ue8 preceduta da una ricostruzione del tortuoso itinerario delle societ\ue0 a partecipazione pubblica nel nostro ordinamento, che nel corso degli anni ha registrato oscillazioni tra opposte polarit\ue0 e contrasti interpretativi profondi, frutto del complesso rapporto tra pubblici poteri ed economia.The thesis aims at analyzing the model of company emerging from the new Consolidated law on public bodies owned companies, coming at the conclusion that the reform has chosen for a private characterization, according to the types envisaged by the Civil Code. Conversely, the need of pursuing public interest has permanently lost the ability to denaturalize the company. It represents an extrasocial interest, that may be satisfied only during the public law phase. To fully appreciate the importance of these results, the analysis of the Consolidated law is preceded by a reconstruction of the tortuous itinerary of public bodies owned companies in the Italian legal system, which over the years has seen oscillations between opposite polarities and deep interpretative contrasts, result of the complex relationship between public authorities and the economy
Extraction and Partial Characterization of Proteolytic Activities from the Cell Surface of Lactobacillus helveticus Zuc2
Abstract Proteolytic activities were extracted from a dairy Lactobacillus helveticus strain and partially characterized. A first cell envelope proteinase (CEP) was extracted using a high ionic strength buffer, both in the presence and in the absence of Ca 2+ . Moreover, cell treatment by 5 M LiCl allowed for the selective removal of the S-layer protein and CEP, suggesting an enzyme ionic linkage to the cell envelope similar to that observed for the Slayer structure. The enzyme specificity against α s1 -CN (f1â23) showed unusual activity on the Lys 3 -His 4 bond compared with other proteinases of the same species. A second proteinase appeared to be linked to the cell membrane because it was extractable only after membrane disgregation by detergents. Its specificity against CN fractions and α s1 -CN (f1â23) was different from that of the first CEP; moreover, the measured activity was lower than that of CEP
Magnetic-buoyancy-induced mixing in AGB stars: Fluorine nucleosynthesis at different metallicities

While observations and theory agree at close-to-solar metallicity, stellar models at lower metallicities overestimate the fluorine production with respect to that of heavy elements. We present F-19 nucleosynthesis results for a set of AGB models with different masses and metallicities in which magnetic buoyancy acts as the driving process for the formation of the C-13 neutron source (the so-called C-13 pocket). We find that F-19 is mainly produced as a result of nucleosynthesis involving secondary N-14 during convective thermal pulses, with a negligible contribution from the N-14 present in the C-13 pocket region. A large F-19 production is thus prevented, resulting in lower fluorine surface abundances. Radiography registration for mosaic tomography
CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTĂFICO E TECNOLĂGICO - CNPQA hybrid method of stitching X-ray computed tomography (CT) datasets is proposed and the feasibility to apply the scheme in a synchrotron tomography beamline with micrometre resolution is shown. The proposed method enables the field of view of the system to be extended while spatial resolution and experimental setup remain unchanged. The approach relies on taking full tomographic datasets at different positions in a mosaic array and registering the frames using Fourier phase correlation and a residue-based correlation. To ensure correlation correctness, the limits for the shifts are determined from the experimental motor position readouts. The masked correlation image is then minimized to obtain the correct shift. The partial datasets are blended in the sinogram space to be compatible with common CT reconstructors. Two-loop cusp anomaly in ABJM at strong coupling
We compute the null cusp anomalous dimension of ABJM theory at strong coupling up to two-loop order. This is done by evaluating corrections to the corresponding superstring partition function, weighted by the AdS 4 Ă ââ3 action in AdS light-cone gauge. We compare our result, where we use an anomalous shift in the AdS 4 radius, with the cusp anomaly of N = 4 SYM, and extract the two-loop contribution to the non-trivial integrable coupling h(λ) of ABJM theory. It coincides with the strong coupling expansion of the exact expression for h(λ) recently conjectured by Gromov and Sizov. Our work provides thus a non-trivial perturbative check for the latter, as well as evidence for two-loop UV-finiteness and quantum integrability of the Type IIA AdS 4 Ă ââ3 superstring in this gauge
