The present investigation was conducted to characterize 20 genotypes of sorghum {Sorghum bicolor (L.) moench} on the basis of 33 morphological characters provided by Protection of Plant Variety & Farmer’s Right Act (PPV&FRA) for Distinctiveness Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing in sorghum. Experimental results revealed that maximum variation was found on the basis of glume colour among the genotypes i.e. G 46, HC 308, HJ 513 had green white, IS 3237, SSG 9, HC 171 had yellow white, SSG 59-3, COFS 29 had grayed purple, S 437-1, SGL-87, S 540-S, SSG (PSSG) had grayed yellow and remaining seven genotypes had grayed orange glume colour. The studied traits showed five genotypes had distinct state of expression. Genotype S-540 showed very high plant height upto the base of flag leaf, HC 136 had compact panicle density at maturity, COFS 29 had very long glume length, SSG 59-3 had distinct expression for days to panicle emergence (50 % of the plants with 50 % of anthesis) and COFS 29 and IS 18551 had short and very long leaf width of blade, respectively. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed principal Factor (PFI) and Principal Factor (PFII) with maximum variability (64.99 %). Classification of genotypes on the basis of DUS traits provided identification of key characteristics of various genotypes

The present study was carried out to evaluate antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of Dillenia indica methanolic leaves extracts in streptozotocin induced diabetic Wistar rats by administering graded oral doses (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight) for 21 days.

A survey of abandoned and neglected Tea Plantations in Sikkim for assessing the possibility of their Rejuvenation and Extension

25-29Sikkim is one of the hilly states in India where tea is cultivated. The developed as well as abandoned and neglected tea plantations exist in the state. A survey of the abandoned and neglected tea plantations in the state revealed that the soil and weather parameters suit the requirements for tea cultivation, and such plantations could be revived by adopting the rejuvenation technology package developed for tea gardens in hills at Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology which has been successfully implemented for development of such type of plantations in Himachal Pradesh

Measurement of temperature and temperature fluctuation of a gaseous flame using double and single exposure speckle photography

Measurement of accurate spatial distribution of temperature and temperature fluctuation in a flame is important to study the combustion process in detail. In this paper first we have presented measurement of temperature profile of a gaseous flame of a two-dimensional slot burner. The errors due to halo effect in the measurements of temperature are minimized by correcting the width of the fringes. Further single exposure speckle photography is used to study temperature fluctuation inside the flame. The 3-D plot of temperature fluctuation for different fuel flow rates of air and acetylene at different vertical heights above the mouth of the burner with distance from the one end of the burner is also presented

Bioconversion of low quality lignocellulosic agricultural waste into edible protein by Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer

Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer was cultivated on selected agro wastes viz. cotton stalks, groundnut haulms, soybean straw, pigeon pea stalks and leaves and wheat straw, alone or in combinations. Cotton stalks, pigeon pea stalks and wheat straw alone or in combination were found to be more suitable than groundnut haulms and soybean straw for the cultivation. Organic supplements such as groundnut oilseed cake, gram powder and rice bran not only affected growth parameters but also increased yields. Thus bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass by P. sajor-caju offers a promising way to convert low quality biomass into an improved human food
