Cycloidal Domains in the Magnetization Reversal Process of Ni80Fe20/Nd16Co84/Gd12Co88 Trilayers

) is investigated in detail with x-ray microscopy and micromagnetic calculations. Two sequential inversion mechanisms are identified. First, magnetic vortex-antivortex pairs move along the field direction while inverting the magnetization of magnetic stripes until they are pinned by defects. The vortex-antivortex displacements are reversible within a field interval which allows their controlled motion. Second, as the reversed magnetic field increases, cycloidal domains appear in the permalloy layer as a consequence of the dissociation of vortex-antivortex pairs due to pinning. The field range where magnetic vortices and antivortices are effectively guided by the stripe pattern is of the order of tens of mT for the
Ni
Fe
layer, as estimated from the stability of cycloid domains in the sample

BRAF and TERT mutations in papillary thyroid cancer patients of Latino ancestry.
Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy in U.S. Latinas and in Colombian women. Studies in non-Latinos indicate that BRAF and TERT mutations are PTC prognostic markers. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical associations of BRAF and TERT mutations in PTC Latino patients from Colombia. We analyzed mutations of BRAF (V600E) and TERT promoter (C228T, C250T) in tumor DNA from 141 patients (75 with classical variant PTC, CVPTC; 66 with follicular variant PTC, FVPTC) recruited through a multi-center study. Associations between mutations and clinical variables were evaluated with Fisher exact tests. Survival was evaluated with Kaplan-Meier plots. Double-mutant tumors (BRAF+/TERT+, n = 14 patients) were more common in CVPTC (P = 0.02). Relative to patients without mutations (n = 48), double mutations were more common in patients with large tumors (P = 0.03), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.01), extra-thyroid extension (P = 0.03), and advanced stage (P = 6.0 × 10-5). In older patients, TERT mutations were more frequent (mean age 51 years vs 45 years for wild type TERT, P = 0.04) and survival was lower (HR = 1.20; P = 0.017); however, given the small sample size, the decrease in survival was not statically significant between genotypes. Comparisons with published data in US whites revealed that Colombian patients had a higher prevalence of severe pathological features and of double-mutant tumors (10 vs 6%, P = 0.001). Mutations in both oncogenes show prognostic associations in Latinos from Colombia. Our study is important to advance Latino PTC precision medicine and replicates previous prognostic associations between BRAF and TERT in this population
The HABP2 G534E polymorphism does not increase nonmedullary thyroid cancer risk in Hispanics.
Familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer (NMTC) has not been clearly linked to causal germline variants, despite the large role that genetic factors play in risk. Recently, HABP2 G534E (rs7080536A) has been implicated as a causal variant in NMTC. We have previously shown that the HABP2 G534E variant is not associated with TC risk in patients from the British Isles. Hispanics are the largest and the youngest minority in the United States and NMTC is now the second most common malignancy in women from this population. In order to determine if the HABP2 G534E variant played a role in NMTC risk among Hispanic populations, we analyzed 281 cases and 1105 population-matched controls from a multicenter study in Colombia, evaluating the association through logistic regression. We found that the HABP2 G534E variant was not significantly associated with NMTC risk (P=0.843) in this Hispanic group. We also stratified available clinical data by multiple available clinicopathological variables and further analyzed the effect of HABP2 on NMTC presentation. However, we failed to detect associations between HABP2 G534E and NMTC risk, regardless of disease presentation (P≥0.273 for all cases). Therefore, without any significant associations between the HABP2 G534E variant and NMTC risk, we conclude that the variant is not causal of NMTC in this Hispanic population
Abdominal Obesity Associated To Medical-Related Absenteeism At A Company Of Metal-Mechanical Industry In Cali, Colombia
Con el objetivo de examinar la frecuencia de obesidad abdominal y el ausentismo laboral por causa médica, se realizó un estudio transversal en 185 varones pertenecientes a una industria metalmecánica. En ellos, además de datos sociodemográficos, se recogió datos antropométricos y se midió la circunferencia de cintura (CC) en centímetros como indicador de obesidad abdominal. Se encontró, además de una alta frecuencia de obesidad abdominal (28,7%), que los trabajadores con obesidad abdominal presentaron mayor frecuencia, mayor tiempo y mayores costos por las incapacidades médicas. Se concluye que la obesidad abdominal en esta muestra fue altamente frecuente; no obstante, al tratarse de un riesgo reversible, las empresas podrían beneficiarse, en términos de ausentismo laboral, de programas preventivo promocionales destinados a controlar este problemaThe aim of this study was examined the abdominal obesity prevalence and association with medical-related absenteeism. A cross-sectional study in 185 men from the metal-mechanical industry was conducted. Sociodemografic and antropometrics data of was gathered, waist circumference was measured as an indicator of abdominal obesity. The prevalence of central obesity was 28.7 %. Subjects with higher values of central obesity showed higher frequency, higher duration and higher costs of medical-related absenteeism, however, this relationship was not significant. We conclude that abdominal obesity is highly frequent in this sample; however, since it’s a reversible risk, enterprises could get benefits from preventive and promotional programs destiny to control this problem
Tunable ferromagnetic resonance in coupled trilayers with crossed in-plane and perpendicular magnetic anisotropies
An original approach to tune the ferromagnetic resonance frequency of a soft magnetic Ni80Fe20 (Permalloy = Py) film with in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) based on the controlled coupling to a hard magnetic NdCox film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) through a nonmagnetic Al spacer is studied. Using the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE), alternating gradient magnetometry (AGM), and vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) spectroscopy, the influence of both the Co concentration and the Al spacer thickness on the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the coupled IMA/PMA system is investigated. Compared to a single Py film, two striking effects of the coupling between IMA and PMA layers can be observed in their FMR spectra. First, there is a significant increase in the zero-field resonance frequency from 2.0 GHz up to 6.4 GHz, and second, an additional frequency hysteresis occurs at low magnetic fields applied along the hard axis. The maximum frequency difference between the frequency branches for increasing and decreasing magnetic fields is as high as 1 GHz, corresponding to a tunability of about 20% at external fields of typically less than ±70 mT. Nanoscale imaging of buried topological defects with quantitative X-ray magnetic microscopy

International License.-- et al.Advances in nanoscale magnetism increasingly require characterization tools providing detailed descriptions of magnetic configurations. Magnetic transmission X-ray microscopy produces element specific magnetic domain images with nanometric lateral resolution in films up to ∼100 nm thick. Here we present an imaging method using the angular dependence of magnetic contrast in a series of high resolution transmission X-ray microscopy images to obtain quantitative descriptions of the magnetization (canting angles relative to surface normal and sense). This method is applied to 55-120 nm thick ferromagnetic NdCo 5 layers (canting angles between 65° and 22°), and to a NdCo 5 film covered with permalloy. Interestingly, permalloy induces a 43° rotation of Co magnetization towards surface normal. Our method allows identifying complex topological defects (merons or 1/2 skyrmions) in a NdCo 5 film that are only partially replicated by the permalloy overlayer. These results open possibilities for the characterization of deeply buried magnetic topological defects, nanostructures and devices.Work supported by Spanish MINECO under grant FIS2013-45469. A. Laboratory estimation of the effects of increasing temperatures on the duration of gonotrophic cycle of Anopheles albimanus (Diptera: Culicidae)
The increase of malaria transmission in the Pacific Coast of Colombia during the occurrence of El Niño warm event has been found not to be linked to increases in the density of the vector Anopheles albimanus, but to other temperature-sensitive variables such as longevity, duration of the gonotrophic cycle or the sporogonic period of Plasmodium. The present study estimated the effects of temperature on duration of the gonotrophic cycle and on maturation of the ovaries of An. albimanus. Blood fed adult mosquitoes were exposed to temperatures of 24, 27, and 30 degrees C, held individually in oviposition cages and assessed at 12 h intervals. At 24, 27, and 30 degrees C the mean development time of the oocytes was 91.2 h (95% C.I.: 86.5-96), 66.2 h (61.5-70.8), and 73.1 h (64-82.3), respectively. The mean duration of the gonotrophic cycle for these three temperatures was 88.4 h (81.88-94.9), 75 h (71.4-78.7), and 69.1 h (64.6-73.6) respectively. These findings indicate that both parameters in An. albimanus are reduced when temperatures rose from 24 to 30 degrees C, in a nonlinear manner. According to these results the increase in malaria transmission during El Niño in Colombia could be associated with a shortening of the gonotrophic cycle in malaria vectors, which could enhance the frequency of man-vector contact, affecting the incidence of the disease
The impacts of land-use changes on the recovery of saltmarshes in Portugal
Human-induced land-use changes have resulted in loss and degradation of intertidal environments
worldwide. Saltmarsh ecosystem dynamics in Portugal are greatly influenced by historic uses and
consequent habitat degradation. This study uses an original approach combining vegetation surveys and
spatial analysis of historic maps and aerial photographs to assess the effects of land use changes on
saltmarshes in two areas in the Algarve, southern Portugal. Historical maps from c. 1800 and aerial
photographs from 1958 to 2010 were analyzed to map saltmarsh ecosystems and quantify land-use
changes in the Alvor estuary and Arade River. Between c. 1800 and 2010 more than half of saltmarshes
were lost due to dyke building and saltmarsh reclamation for agriculture. In mid-1960s, the abandonment
of reclaimed agricultural areas resulted in the recolonization of saltmarsh vegetation, which
developed physically separated from natural marshes. In the study area, these saltmarshes naturally
evolved into two distinct typologies: (1) enclosed mixed marshes, formed by patches of brackish,
freshwater and some invasive species developing due to saline intrusion in areas where dykes have not
been breached; and (2) tidally-restored saltmarshes, formed in areas where dyke breaching allows
incursion of tides and development of a vegetation structure similar to natural saltmarshes. In Europe,
passive (without human intervention) and active (artificially planned) saltmarsh restoration are important
mechanisms for voluntary or statutory re-creation of intertidal habitats. Improved understanding of
the factors influencing the development of distinct saltmarsh typologies through passive ecosystem
recovery can provide new insights to support decision-making concerning intertidal habitat restoratio
Prevalence and factors associated with adolescent pregnancy among sexually active adolescent girls in Peru: Evidence from Demographic and Family Health Survey, 2015-2019 [version 2; peer review: 1 approved, 2 approved with reservations]
Background: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy among sexually active adolescents, and identify the factors associated with this problem. Methods: A population-based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using pooled data from the Demographic and Family Health Surveys of Peru, 2015-2019. A total sample of 8850 adolescent girls aged 12 to 19 years who reported a history of sexual intercourse were included. To identify factors related to adolescent pregnancy, the study employed adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The aPR were obtained from a multivariable logistic regression model. Results: The prevalence of adolescent pregnancy among sexually active adolescents in Peru was 30.9% (95%CI: 29.4–32.4%). In the multivariable analysis; being 17-19 years (aPR: 1.48; 95%CI :1.33–1.64), being married or cohabitant (aPR: 4.01; 95%CI: 3.48–4.61) and belonging to the Quechua ethnicity group (aPR: 1.16; 95%CI: 1.07–1.25), were associated with a higher prevalence. Conversely, the following factors were associated with a lower prevalence of pregnancy: being employed (aPR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.76–0.86), being currently studying (aPR: 0.43; 95%CI: 0.38–0.49), belonging to the second (aPR: 0.91; 95%CI: 0.85–0.97), third (aPR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.74–0.89), fourth (aPR: 0.79; 95%CI: 0.69–0.91) and fifth (aPR: 0.59; 95%CI: 0.47–0.75) wealth quintile, initiating sexual relations in middle adolescente (aPR: 0.76; 95%CI: 0.69–0.83) or late adolescence (aPR: 0.40; 95%CI: 0.35–0.46), perceiving a future pregnancy as a problem (aPR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.72–0.83) and having knowledge of the moment in the cycle when pregnancy can occur (aPR: 0.84; 95%CI: 0.77–0.92) Conclusions: Approximately three out of ten adolescents who initiated a sexual life had at least one pregnancy. Age, marital status, employment, education, wealth, ethnicity, age at first intercourse, knowledge of when in the cycle she may become pregnant, and perception of future pregnancy were associated with adolescent pregnanc
Ocean Circulation over North Atlantic underwater features in the path of the Mediterranean Outflow Water: Ormonde and Formigas seamounts, and the Gazul mud volcano
Seamounts constitute an obstacle to the ocean circulation, modifying it. As a result, a
variety of hydrodynamical processes and phenomena may take place over seamounts,
among others, flow intensification, current deflection, upwelling, Taylor caps, and
internal waves. These oceanographic effects may turn seamounts into very productive
ecosystems with high species diversity, and in some cases, are densely populated by
benthic organisms, such corals, gorgonians, and sponges. In this study, we describe the
oceanographic conditions over seamounts and other underwater features in the path of
the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), where populations of benthic suspensions
feeders have been observed. Using CTD, LADPC and biochemical measurements
carried out in the Ormonde and Formigas seamounts and the Gazul mud volcano
(Northeast Atlantic), we show that Taylor caps were not observed in any of the sampled
features. However, we point out that the relatively high values of the Brunt–Väisälä
frequency in the MOW halocline, in conjunction with the slope of the seamount flanks,
set up conditions for the breakout of internal waves and amplification of the currents.
This may enhance the vertical mixing, resuspending the organic material deposited
on the seafloor and, therefore, increasing the food availability for the communities
dominated by benthic suspension feeders. Thus, we hypothesize that internal waves
could be improving the conditions for benthic suspension feeders to grow on the slope
