Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism, and Domain Wall Scattering in Epitaxial hcp Co Films
Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) observed in transport measurements of
hcp Co films with stripe domains were recently reported and interpreted in
terms of a novel domain wall (DW) scattering mechanism. Here detailed MR
measurements, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic calculations are
combined to elucidate the origin of MR in this material. The large negative
room temperature MR reported previously is shown to be due to ferromagnetic
resistivity anisotropy. Measurements of the resistivity for currents parallel
(CIW) and perpendicular to DWs (CPW) have been conducted as a function of
temperature. Low temperature results show that any intrinsic effect of DWs
scattering on MR of this material is very small compared to the anisotropic MR.Comment: 5 pages, 5 Figures, submitted to PR

The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey III: Observations Toward the Galaxy Pair NGC 7332/7339 and the Isolated Galaxy NGC 1156
Two 5 square degree regions around the NGC 7332/9 galaxy pair and the
isolated galaxy NGC 1156 have been mapped in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen
(HI) with the Arecibo L-band Feed Array out to a redshift of ~0.065
km/s) as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. One of the aims of this
survey is to investigate the environment of galaxies by identifying dwarf
companions and interaction remnants; both of these areas provide the potential
for such discoveries. The neutral hydrogen observations were complemented by
optical and radio follow-up observations with a number of telescopes. A total
of 87 galaxies were found, of which 39 (45 per cent) were previously cataloged
and 15 (17 per cent) have prior redshifts. Two dwarf galaxies have been
discovered in the NGC 7332 group and a single dwarf galaxy in the vicinity NGC
1156 . A parallel optical search of the area revealed one further possible

Ulcerative colitis-risk loci on chromosomes 1p36 and 12q15 found by genome-wide association study.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon that presents as diarrhea and gastrointestinal bleeding. We performed a genome-wide association study using DNA samples from 1,052 individuals with ulcerative colitis and preexisting data from 2,571 controls, all of European ancestry. In an analysis that controlled for gender and population structure, ulcerative colitis loci attaining genome-wide significance and subsequent replication in two independent populations were identified on chromosomes 1p36 (rs6426833, combined P = 5.1 x 10(-13), combined odds ratio OR = 0.73) and 12q15 (rs1558744, combined P = 2.5 x 10(-12), combined OR = 1.35). In addition, combined genome-wide significant evidence for association was found in a region spanning BTNL2 to HLA-DQB1 on chromosome 6p21 (rs2395185, combined P = 1.0 x 10(-16), combined OR = 0.66) and at the IL23R locus on chromosome 1p31 (rs11209026, combined P = 1.3 x 10(-8), combined OR = 0.56; rs10889677, combined P = 1.3 x 10(-8), combined OR = 1.29)
MetaBioME: a database to explore commercially useful enzymes in metagenomic datasets
Microbial enzymes have many known applications as biocatalysts in biotechnology, agriculture, medical and other industries. However, only a few enzymes are currently employed for such commercial applications. In this scenario, the current onslaught of metagenomic data provides a new unexplored treasure trove of genomic wealth that can not only enhance the enzyme repertoire by the discovery of novel commercially useful enzymes (CUEs) but can also reveal better functional variants for existing CUEs. We prepared a catalogue of CUEs using text mining of PubMed abstracts and other publicly available information, and manually curated the data to identify 510 CUEs. Further, in order to identify novel homologues of these CUEs, we identified potential ORFs in publicly available metagenomic datasets from 10 diverse sources. Using this strategy, we have developed a resource called MetaBioME (http://metasystems.riken.jp/metabiome/) that comprises (i) a database of CUEs and (ii) a comprehensive platform to facilitate homology-based computational identification of novel homologous CUEs from metagenomic and bacterial genomic datasets. Using MetaBioME, we have identified several novel homologues to known CUEs that can potentially serve as leads for further experimental verification
Religion and community: frameworks and issues
The history of religion in Britain has been dominated by the concept of secularisation. This suggests that the working classes in the cities led a move away from the churches in the second half of the nineteenth century, if not before. Recent work, however, presents a growing challenge to this account, instead stressing continuities of religious practice and belief into the 20th century. This article reviews this revisionism. It asks why revival occurred when and where it did, which groups were associated with 19th century denominations and how religious identities changed. In doing this it also suggests areas for further local research. The periods before the 1840s and after the 1910s, regions and localities outside London, and the patterns of everyday religious practice and belief, are themes on which community historians can address a host of under researched issues
Ballistic electron transport through magnetic domain walls
Electron transport limited by the rotating exchange-potential of domain walls
is calculated in the ballistic limit for the itinerant ferromagnets Fe, Co, and
Ni. When realistic band structures are used, the domain wall magnetoresistance
is enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to the results for previously
studied two-band models. Increasing the pitch of a domain wall by confinement
in a nano-structured point contact is predicted to give rise to a strongly

Supernova / Acceleration Probe: A Satellite Experiment to Study the Nature of the Dark Energy
The Supernova / Acceleration Probe (SNAP) is a proposed space-based
experiment designed to study the dark energy and alternative explanations of
the acceleration of the Universe's expansion by performing a series of
complementary systematics-controlled measurements. We describe a
self-consistent reference mission design for building a Type Ia supernova
Hubble diagram and for performing a wide-area weak gravitational lensing study.
A 2-m wide-field telescope feeds a focal plane consisting of a 0.7
square-degree imager tiled with equal areas of optical CCDs and near infrared
sensors, and a high-efficiency low-resolution integral field spectrograph. The
SNAP mission will obtain high-signal-to-noise calibrated light-curves and
spectra for several thousand supernovae at redshifts between z=0.1 and 1.7. A
wide-field survey covering one thousand square degrees resolves ~100 galaxies
per square arcminute. If we assume we live in a cosmological-constant-dominated
Universe, the matter density, dark energy density, and flatness of space can
all be measured with SNAP supernova and weak-lensing measurements to a
systematics-limited accuracy of 1%. For a flat universe, the
density-to-pressure ratio of dark energy can be similarly measured to 5% for
the present value w0 and ~0.1 for the time variation w'. The large survey area,
depth, spatial resolution, time-sampling, and nine-band optical to NIR
photometry will support additional independent and/or complementary dark-energy
measurement approaches as well as a broad range of auxiliary science programs.
