Wide-Area Situation Awareness based on a Secure Interconnection between Cyber-Physical Control Systems

Posteriormente, examinamos e identificamos los requisitos especiales que limitan el diseño y la operación de una arquitectura de interoperabilidad segura para los SSC (particularmente los SCCF) del smart grid. Nos enfocamos en modelar requisitos no funcionales que dan forma a esta infraestructura, siguiendo la metodología NFR para extraer requisitos esenciales, técnicas para la satisfacción de los requisitos y métricas para nuestro modelo arquitectural. Estudiamos los servicios necesarios para la interoperabilidad segura de los SSC del SG revisando en profundidad los mecanismos de seguridad, desde los servicios básicos hasta los procedimientos avanzados capaces de hacer frente a las amenazas sofisticadas contra los sistemas de control, como son los sistemas de detección, protección y respuesta ante intrusiones. Nuestro análisis se divide en diferentes áreas: prevención, consciencia y reacción, y restauración; las cuales general un modelo de seguridad robusto para la protección de los sistemas críticos. Proporcionamos el diseño para un modelo arquitectural para la interoperabilidad segura y la interconexión de los SCCF del smart grid. Este escenario contempla la interconectividad de una federación de proveedores de energía del SG, que interactúan a través de la plataforma de interoperabilidad segura para gestionar y controlar sus infraestructuras de forma cooperativa. La plataforma tiene en cuenta las características inherentes y los nuevos servicios y tecnologías que acompañan al movimiento de la Industria 4.0. Por último, presentamos una prueba de concepto de nuestro modelo arquitectural, el cual ayuda a validar el diseño propuesto a través de experimentaciones. Creamos un conjunto de casos de validación que prueban algunas de las funcionalidades principales ofrecidas por la arquitectura diseñada para la interoperabilidad segura, proporcionando información sobre su rendimiento y capacidades.Las infraestructuras críticas (IICC) modernas son vastos sistemas altamente complejos, que precisan del uso de las tecnologías de la información para gestionar, controlar y monitorizar el funcionamiento de estas infraestructuras. Debido a sus funciones esenciales, la protección y seguridad de las infraestructuras críticas y, por tanto, de sus sistemas de control, se ha convertido en una tarea prioritaria para las diversas instituciones gubernamentales y académicas a nivel mundial. La interoperabilidad de las IICC, en especial de sus sistemas de control (SSC), se convierte en una característica clave para que estos sistemas sean capaces de coordinarse y realizar tareas de control y seguridad de forma cooperativa. El objetivo de esta tesis se centra, por tanto, en proporcionar herramientas para la interoperabilidad segura de los diferentes SSC, especialmente los sistemas de control ciber-físicos (SCCF), de forma que se potencie la intercomunicación y coordinación entre ellos para crear un entorno en el que las diversas infraestructuras puedan realizar tareas de control y seguridad cooperativas, creando una plataforma de interoperabilidad segura capaz de dar servicio a diversas IICC, en un entorno de consciencia situacional (del inglés situational awareness) de alto espectro o área (wide-area). Para ello, en primer lugar, revisamos las amenazas de carácter más sofisticado que amenazan la operación de los sistemas críticos, particularmente enfocándonos en los ciberataques camuflados (del inglés stealth) que amenazan los sistemas de control de infraestructuras críticas como el smart grid. Enfocamos nuestra investigación al análisis y comprensión de este nuevo tipo de ataques que aparece contra los sistemas críticos, y a las posibles contramedidas y herramientas para mitigar los efectos de estos ataques

Beyond Gender: Sex, Class, and Ethnicity in Kate Chopin’s Short Stories

[Abstract] The object of study of this dissertation are three short stories by one of the most representative writers of nineteenth-century American literature, Kate Chopin. The author is specially appreciated by feminist literary critics for her exploration of the female identity in her novel The Awakening (1899). This project aims to demonstrate that gender must be studied alongside other analytic categories such as sex, class, and ethnicity through an analysis of the selected stories: “At the ‘Cadian Ball” (1894), “The Storm” (1969), and “Désirée’s Baby” (1893). In my studies, I also discuss the stories’ form and content—characters, settings, descriptions, etc.—from an intersectional feminism perspective. This project required the close reading of my object of study and the consultation of specialized dictionaries—such as The Dictionary of Feminist Theory and Fifty Key Concepts in Gender Studies—and academic works about intersectionality—e.g., Kimberlé Crenshaw’s “Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color”. I also read several publications about Chopin’s literary production, as the works of Holtman, Jeffers, and Toth, the latter being recommended by Kate Chopin International Society. Some of the key concepts addressed in the below pages belong to the fields of feminism and critical theory like gender, class, ethnicity, and intersectionality. The latter term is particularly relevant because it offers the possibility to remove the local color label from Chopin’s works (Holtman). Therefore, analyzing the stories from an intersectional feminism approach allows the reader to understand the way society pressures individuals to stay within determined identity categories, and so interferes with class mobility and social change. My dissertation is divided in two parts. In the first part, I explain the theoretical framework of this project. 1.1 consists of an explanation of the concepts of gender, sex, class, race, and ethnicity; it includes a summary of their academic history, as well as brief accounts of some terminological debates around them. 1.2 reviews the concept of intersectionality and its application to feminist theory. The second part of this project applies the reviewed theoretical concepts to the analysis of “At the ‘Cadian Ball”, “The Storm”, and “Désirée’s Baby”. Each story takes one subsection of this part. The B.A. thesis ends with a conclusion, which gathers some of its key ideas in order to ratify the initial hypothesis: expanding upon previous feminist work, to challenge the traditional classification of Chopin’s short fiction as local color writing through an intersectional feminism perspective. The Claudinome: Interactome analysis of the human claudin protein family

Claudins constitute a family of tetraspan transmembrane proteins that are ubiquitously expressed in epithelial tissues. They are the major components of tight junctions (TJs), defining the barrier properties in epithelia and regulating the paracellular transport of water and solutes. Claudins can also be found outside the TJ along the basolateral plasma membrane of epithelial cells. It is not yet well understood how claudins regulate the formation of TJs and which functions they exert outside them. The role of their extracellular loops in the regulation of paracellular transport has been widely studied. In contrast, it is not clear how their long and unstructured intracellular C-terminal regions intervene in their functions beyond interacting with tight junction protein ZO-1 (TJP1). Although protein interaction studies can help to answer these two key questions, the disordered nature of the cytosolic tail of claudins makes it challenging. In this work, a large-scale study is presented combining two complementary pull-down techniques followed by mass spectrometry to create an interaction landscape of the claudin protein family. Co-immunoprecipitation (CoIP) of recombinant claudins overexpressed in MDCK-C7 epithelial cells provided information about interactions beyond the already known TJ proteins. Protein interaction screen on a peptide matrix (PRISMA) allowed for the mapping of interactions along the disordered cytosolic C-terminal region of claudins and enables to study the effect of numerous post-translational modifications (PTMs) in these interactions. We confirmed newly identified claudin tail interactors from our PRISMA approach by proximity ligation assays (PLA) and revealed their possible implication in spatially separated biological processes in epithelial cells. By combining these two complementary approaches, we were able to create the Claudinome, the first comprehensive map of interactors for the entire human claudin protein family, which constitutes a valuable resource to improve our understanding of functional connections and regulatory processes for all claudins

Academic book reviews of literature in English and Spanish: writers’ visibility and invisibility strategies for expressing critical comments

345 p.One important academic writing skill is the ability of writers to construe an appropriate representation of themselves and their work through their textual voice. One way in which writers achieve this is by intruding into their text in order to explicitly signal or conceal their personal responsibility for the ideas referenced in it. However, writers’ decisions in this respect have shown to be highly problematic in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), especially for non-native English speakers. Our paper hypothesizes that a part of this problem might be related to differing crosscultural notions of good face, partly reflected in the ways and the extent to which writers typically intrude into their texts by means of writers’ visibility and invisibility strategies. We explore this hypothesis by comparing the actual practices followed by writers from two different writing cultures to express one specific type of claim (a critical comment on a book under review) in one specific genre (an academic book review) and one disciplinary field (literature). Our comparison is based on two corpora consisting of 20 texts in British & American English and 20 in Castilian Spanish. The results show that reviewers from these two writing cultures differ greatly in their preferences for reaffirming or suppressing their personal identity when expressing critical comments on a book under review. This indicates that the notion of good face is culturally determined in this respect. We discuss our results in the light of information obtained through a pilot e-mail interview with relevant informants

La canciller de la austeridad : la construcción de la imagen de Angela Merkel en La Vanguardia

La percepción de Angela Merkel por parte de la ciudadanía española ha experimentado un vuelco cualitativo en los últimos años, incrementándose las valoraciones de carácter negativo conforme nos acercamos al presente. Esta tendencia obedece a un creciente protagonismo de la canciller alemana en nuestra agenda política, fruto del papel de liderazgo que ejerce en la Unión Europea. Partiendo de estos hechos, el presente artículo analiza el papel del periódico La Vanguardia en la construcción mediática de esta líder de facto. Mediante el análisis de los textos de opinión publicados en el periodo circundante a las tres últimas elecciones federales alemanas (celebradas en 2005, 2009 y 2013), comprobamos la influencia del medio en la formación de las percepciones sostenidas por los ciudadanos, vinculándolas con los resultados más destacados de los estudios sociológicos y las encuestas que a ella se refieren. Mediante el análisis de los aspectos formales y de contenido de dichas piezas, y tomando siempre en consideración los medios de comunicación como agentes fundamentales en el proceso de formación de juicios y valoraciones políticas, se analiza la evolución de una corriente de opinión cada vez más desfavorable hacia la ya bautizada por los medios como «la fría dueña de Europa».The Spanish perception of German Chancellor Angela Merkel has undergone a qualitative change. Negative evaluations have increased as we approach the present, due to her increasing role in the national sphere because of her leadership in the European Union. Taking these facts as a starting point, this article notes the influence of a major national newspaper (La Vanguardia) in the media construction of this de facto leader. Linking with sociological surveys, we check the media influence in the formation of perceptions through the analysis of the opinion pieces published during the last three German federal elections, in 2005, 2009 and 2013. The formal, stylistic and content aspects are taken into account in the analysis of the opinion pieces, always taking mass media as key players in the formation of judgments. In this sense, we analyze the evolution of an increasingly unfavorable tendency toward a political figure dubbed by media as “the cold owner of Europe”

Los estudios de género son abordados desde diversas disciplinas con variadas intensidades y enfoques. La labor que desde la academia se realiza puede tener efectos positivos sobre la ciudadanía e influir sobre las líneas de acción de las instituciones, incorporando las averiguaciones de los estudios científicos a la vida social. La producción sobre género y comunicación cuenta con altas dosis de componentes sociales y de rigurosa actualidad, que no debieran ser desaprovechados. Sin embargo, el carácter difuso de los trabajos en este campo dificulta su consideración. Ante esta coyuntura, la presente comunicación busca conocer el lugar del género y su tratamiento en el ámbito de la comunicación en las diez publicaciones más destacadas en este ámbito académico en el último año, de forma que pueda servir también como material de utilidad a los investigadores centrados en la relaciones que se establecen entre el género y la comunicación, a modo de sucinta radiografía reciente de nuestro campoVarious disciplines address gender studies with varying intensities and approaches. The work done from the academy can have positive effects on citizenship, besides influencing the action program of the institutions, by incorporating the inquiries of academic studies into social life. The production on gender and communication has high doses of social components and rigorous topicality. These resources should not be wasted. However, the diffuse nature of the work in this field makes its consideration difficult. Given this situation, the present paper seeks to know the place of the genre and its treatment in the field of communication in the ten most outstanding publications in this academic field during the last year. Research is focused on aspects such as frequency, theme or authors, so that it can also serve as useful material for researchers focused on the relationships established between gender and communication, as a succinct recent radiography of our field

Manufacturing Politicians: Angela Merkel's Image in the Spanish Press during the German Federal Elections

Ponencia presentada en The European Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2017: History, Story, Narrative, 11-12 July 2017, Brighton, United KingdomSpanish public opinion shows, according to sociological surveys, a disaffection towards the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. From the influence of the media on current prevailing opinion in society, this article analyzes the opinion pieces published in the Spanish reference press: El País, El Mundo and La Vanguardia. The period surrounding the last three federal elections in the German country is taken as temporal reference point. Through the methodological technique of content analysis applied to these texts, the investigation studies what kind of valuations are transmitted about a women erected as leader of Europe, who does not have the sympathy of the citizens of so-called peripheral countries. Aspects like the media ideological influence in the image creating process are also analyzed in order to establish whether a distorted image based on a negative-aspects approach has been created or not

El pensamiento social en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje del concepto de tutela en niños y niñas del grado cuarto

En el proceso educativo, las ciencias sociales tienen como objetivo que los ciudadanos se formen como sujetos en y para la vida, participando activamente con una consciencia crítica, que permita alcanzar una comprensión de la realidad para transformar la sociedad Lineamientos Curriculares, (2009). A partir de estas consideraciones se plantea la siguiente pregunta de investigación: ¿Qué Habilidades del Pensamiento Social (HPS) se identifican en una secuencia didáctica en la enseñanza y aprendizaje del mecanismo de participación ciudadana (La Tutela) apoyada con el uso de las TIC con los estudiantes del grado cuarto de la Institución Educativa Hugo Ángel Jaramillo de la ciudad de Pereira?. Con el objetivo de describir las (HPS) planeadas e identificadas en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje, a través de una reflexión teórica que guía el problema de investigación, abarcando varios autores. Este proceso se sustenta sobre las prácticas educativas en el aula, y se ubica en un enfoque cuantitativo descriptivo, con el cual se pretende profundizar en un fenómeno social, en el contexto mismo y por medio del estudio de caso (Yin, 2005; Stake, 1999) de modo que permita analizar e interpretar la realidad en un ámbito natural, habitual e incluyendo las TIC. Es así como el análisis de la información se realiza en tres momentos; primero se identifican las HPS que poseen los estudiantes, en una previa planeación; segundo pretende identificar las HPS que aún no evidencian los estudiantes utilizando diversas actividades planeadas y organizadas desde la unidad didáctica y finalmente contrastar lo planeado con lo identificado, para evidenciar si el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de las HPS fueron afianzadas por los estudiantes, obteniendo como resultado el aporte al conocimiento y a la formación de los entes involucrados, además de proporcionar a docentes en ciencias sociales apoyos para el mejoramiento de las prácticas educativas en el área.In the educational process, social sciences have the aim to form citizens as subjects in and for life, actively participating with a critical awareness that achieves an understanding of reality to transform society Curriculum Guidelines, (2009). From these considerations it raises the research questions: What Social Thinking Skills (HPS) develop a teaching sequence in the teaching and learning of the mechanism citizen participation (guardianship) supported with the use of ICT with fourth grade students of School Hugo Angel Jaramillo Pereira city? In order to interpret (HPS), this is developed in the teaching and learning process, through theoretical reflection that guides the research problem, encompassing several authors. This process is based on the educational practices in the classroom, and is located in a descriptive quantitative approach, which aims to get deep in a social phenomenon in the context itself and through case study (Yin, 2005, Stake, 1999) so as to analyze and interpret reality in a natural and usual environment including ICT. Thus, the data analysis is done in three stages, first identify the HPS that students possess in a prior planning, the second step is to develop not yet evident HPS students using various activities planned and organized from the unit didactic and finally contrast what is planned whit what is developed to show whether or not the teaching and learning of HPS were entrenched by students, obtaining as a result the contribution to knowledge and training in the communities involved, and provide science teachers a social support for the improvement of educational practices in the area

Estrategia de gestión ambiental a partir de intervenciones en el territorio por macroproyectos, caso del Parque Temático de Flora y fauna de Pereira - vereda Esperanza Galicia

Este trabajo surge con el propósito de aportar estrategias de mejoramiento para comunidades locales que puedan ser afectadas por megaproyectos en un territorio determinado y que estos, así como generan impactos en la población, también pueden aportar al desarrollo para las zonas de influencia directa Los temas y conceptos que contiene este, es una recopilación de información en fuentes primarias y secundarias que buscan más que argumentar, generar estilo de vida y aplicabilidad ante las potencialidades de este territorio, puesto que una adecuada lectura territorial con calidad y participación de actores sociales tanto públicos como privados que sepan las verdaderas necesidades y características particulares tanto de la población como del territorio encontraran en este una gran oportunidad para promover el desarrollo en la región.This work arises for the purpose of providing improvement strategies for local communities that may be affected by mega-projects in a given territory and that these, as well as generate impacts on the population, also can bring development to areas of direct influence. Themes and concepts contained in this, is a compilation of information on primary and secondary sources that seek more than argue, generate lifestyle and applicability to the potential of this territory, since a proper territorial reading quality and participation of both public and private social actors who know the true needs and special characteristics of both the population and the territory will find this a great opportunity to promote development in the region. The process of development of this work was carried out at different times which are specified both in its objectives and in the elaboration of each of these, of course to make this proposal, first became a diagnosis, then an analysis and from these management strategies.
