    The Egypto-Aramaean Stela of Ahatabu (Berlin Ă„M 7707) : A Cross-Cultural Discussion

    The mortuary stela of a woman named Ahatabu, found in the Saqqara necropolis in Egypt, is a uniquely customized artefact that gives insight into the multicultural environment of Achaemenid Egypt (526–332 BCE). The woman and her family seem to have lived in Marea in the western Delta, possibly in a garrison complex. The stela contains two inscriptions, one written in Egyptian hieroglyphic script and the other in Aramaic. The stela design draws on a mixture of generic and highly customized features rooted in traditional Egyptian and arguably Yahwistic, (Egypto-)Phoenician, Aramaean, Egypto-Carian, Egypto-Ionian, and (Egypto-)Persian cultural traditions. Though unusual from an iconographic standpoint with respect to both comparable Egypto-Egyptian depictions and contemporary or slightly earlier Egypto-foreign stelae, the basic design of three registers spread over the whole stela while integrating the rounded stela top and the upper register is typical of a group of Egypto-Carian/Ionian stelae from Memphis. The inspiration may have come either from a contemporarily visible display in the necropolis or from actual designs within the various workshops. This article discusses the iconographic and epigraphic details of the stela in order to contextualize the artefact and its honorees within contemporary Egyptian design and funerary practices.Peer reviewe

    Prevalence and Prediction of Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease in Patients Referred for Valvular Heart Surgery

    Current guidelines recommend a coronary evaluation before valvular heart surgery (VHS). Diagnostic coronary angiography is recommended in patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD) and those with high pretest probability of CAD. In patients with low or intermediate pretest probability of CAD, the guidelines recommend coronary computed tomographic angiography. However, there are no tools available to objectively assess a patient’s risk for obstructive CAD before VHS. To address this deficit, 5,360 patients without histories of CAD who underwent diagnostic coronary angiography as part of preoperative evaluation for VHS were identified. Obstructive CAD was defined as ≥50% stenosis in ≥1 artery. Of the patients assessed, 1,035 (19.3%) were found to have obstructive CAD. Through multivariate analysis, age, gender, diabetes, renal dysfunction, hyperlipidemia, and a family history of premature CAD were found to be associated with the presence of obstructive CAD (p \u3c0.001 for all). After adjustment, the specific dysfunctional valve was not associated with the presence of obstructive CAD. Patients were then randomly split into derivation and validation cohorts. Within the derivation cohort, using only age, gender, and the presence or absence of risk factors, a model was constructed to predict the risk for obstructive CAD (C statistic 0.766, 95% confidence interval 0.750 to 0.783). The risk prediction model performed well within the validation cohort (C statistic 0.767, 95% confidence interval 0.751 to 0.784, optimism 0.004). The bias-corrected C statistic for the model was 0.765 (95% confidence interval 0.748 to 0.782). In conclusion, this novel risk prediction tool can be used to objectively risk-stratify patients who undergo preoperative evaluation before VHS and to facilitate appropriate triage to computed tomographic angiography or diagnostic coronary angiography

    Community engagement is a defining attribute of the campus, and the current Strategic Plan identifies a number of strategic actions to “Deepen our Commitment to Community Engagement.” In May 2015, A Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on Public Scholarship was established in May, 2015 to address the campus strategic goals to “recognize and reward contributions to community engagement” and “define community engagement work…in Faculty Annual Reports and promotion and tenure guidelines.” At IUPUI, scholarly work occurs in research and creative activity, teaching, and/or service. In terms of promotion and tenure, faculty members must declare an area of excellence in one of these three domains. The FLC on Public Scholarship is a 3-year initiative co-sponsored by Academic Affairs and the Center for Service and Learning (CSL). Seven faculty members from across campus were selected to be part of the 2015-2016 FLC, and two co-chairs worked closely with CSL staff to plan and facilitate the ongoing work. The FLC is charged with defining public scholarship, identifying criteria to evaluate this type of scholarship, assist faculty in documenting their community-engaged work, and working with department Chairs and Deans in adapting criteria into promotion and tenure materials. The intended audiences for this work includes faculty, community-engaged scholars, public scholars, promotion and tenure committees, external reviewers, and department Chairs and Deans.     Precursors prior to Type IIn supernova explosions are common: precursor rates, properties, and correlations

    There is a growing number of supernovae (SNe), mainly of Type IIn, which present an outburst prior to their presumably final explosion. These precursors may affect the SN display, and are likely related to some poorly charted phenomena in the final stages of stellar evolution. Here we present a sample of 16 SNe IIn for which we have Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) observations obtained prior to the SN explosion. By coadding these images taken prior to the explosion in time bins, we search for precursor events. We find five Type IIn SNe that likely have at least one possible precursor event, three of which are reported here for the first time. For each SN we calculate the control time. Based on this analysis we find that precursor events among SNe IIn are common: at the one-sided 99% confidence level, more than 50% of SNe IIn have at least one pre-explosion outburst that is brighter than absolute magnitude -14, taking place up to 1/3 yr prior to the SN explosion. The average rate of such precursor events during the year prior to the SN explosion is likely larger than one per year, and fainter precursors are possibly even more common. We also find possible correlations between the integrated luminosity of the precursor, and the SN total radiated energy, peak luminosity, and rise time. These correlations are expected if the precursors are mass-ejection events, and the early-time light curve of these SNe is powered by interaction of the SN shock and ejecta with optically thick circumstellar material.Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, submitted to Ap

    Berkeley Supernova Ia Program II: Initial Analysis of Spectra Obtained Near Maximum Brightness

    In this second paper in a series we present measurements of spectral features of 432 low-redshift (z < 0.1) optical spectra of 261 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) within 20 d of maximum brightness. The data were obtained from 1989 through the end of 2008 as part of the Berkeley SN Ia Program (BSNIP) and are presented in BSNIP I (Silverman et al. 2012). We describe in detail our method of automated, robust spectral feature definition and measurement which expands upon similar previous studies. Using this procedure, we attempt to measure expansion velocities, pseudo-equivalent widths (pEW), spectral feature depths, and fluxes at the centre and endpoints of each of nine major spectral feature complexes. We investigate how velocity and pEW evolve with time and how they correlate with each other. Various spectral classification schemes are employed and quantitative spectral differences among the subclasses are investigated. Several ratios of pEW values are calculated and studied. The so-called Si II ratio, often used as a luminosity indicator (Nugent et al. 1995), is found to be well correlated with the so-called "SiFe" ratio and anticorrelated with the analogous "SSi ratio," confirming the results of previous studies. Furthermore, SNe Ia that show strong evidence for interaction with circumstellar material or an aspherical explosion are found to have the largest near-maximum expansion velocities and pEWs, possibly linking extreme values of spectral observables with specific progenitor or explosion scenarios.
