Living in a Translational World. Translation as Part of Transcultural Identity

En el marco del paradigma poscolonial y multicultural, el pluralismo es orgánico, la traducción es una inevitable forma de vida, y la conciencia y estrategias traductoras pueden ser una manera de reforzar diversas identidades lingüísticas y culturales. Este artículo pretende reflexionar en torno a la relevancia de la traducción en cuanto a la construcción de la identidad en el mundo contemporáneo. Con este objetivo, nos centramos, de forma sucinta, en novelas que resultan ser propuestas narrativas excepcionales a este respecto: The Translator (1999), de la sudanesa Leila Aboulela, The Interpreter (2003), de la coreano-norteamericana Suki Kim, y The Mission Song (2006), del británico John Le Carré. Todos estos textos promueven, desde diversas perspectivas y matices, un profundo punto de vista traductológico de naturaleza posestructuralista, en el que la traducción y la interpretación son formas de vida y alegorías de la identidad transcultural

Professional translators’ and interpreters’ views on information competence: An exploratory qualitative study from the Spanish context

Information competence is essential in professional translation and interpreting. This paper gathers the views of professional translators and interpreters in Spain on information competence, by means of an exploratory qualitative study. A questionnaire composed essentially of open-ended questions was applied to gather data and the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti was used to code the results using thematic content analysis methods. The views provided by a sample of professional translators and interpreters (n = 156) on the importance of information competence were collected, together with their recommendations on this key competence for those who are starting their training in translation and interpreting. The study also explores the main information needs highlighted by professionals, the sources of information they use most frequently and how they verify information, and their opinions on the gender perspective (with explicit mention of inclusive language) as part of information competence in professional practice. The results show that professionals consider information competence to be absolutely essential in the framework of translation competence, and recommend reinforcing information literacy training in university undergraduate degree programmes. They have multiple information needs (from terminological to contextual) that make them turn to a wide range of information resources (mainly personal sources and online documentary resources), but they need to strengthen their knowledge for information evaluation. Regarding the gender perspective, professionals practically limit their answers to their opinions on inclusive language and, although most of them are in favour, some resistance is detected. From the diagnosis carried out in this research, opportunities for supporting information literacy instruction in undergraduate degrees and in continuing professional development are identified

Sobre José María Arguedas y Vikram Chandra : no, no somos unos aculturados

Bucear en el ámbito de la literatura comparada es, ante todo, un ejercicio de libertad. Y esa sensación se vuelve más plena cuando el corpus de trabajo está formado por material intercultural. En este artículo se leen, de manera vertical y no exhaustiva, novelas de dos autores alejados tanto en el tiempo como en el espacio: Los ríos Profundos (1958), del peruano José María Arguedas, y Red Earth and Pouring Rain (1995), del indio Vikram Chandra. Los principios de comparabilidad que sustentan nuestra propuesta de análisis ahondan en el hecho de que ambos son narradores bilingües, clue viven y crean en el conflictivo intersticio entre culturas enfrentadas por complejas relaciones de poder. Los suyas son, ante todo, narrativas de resistencia cultural, de transculturación, de rechazo a las polarizaciones, de supervivencia emocional.__________________________________Delving into the field of comparative literature is, above all, an act of freedom. And this feeling becomes deeper when the work examined is intercultural. In this paper we seek to read, on a vertical axis and with no exhaustive aims, the novels of two authors, different both in time and space: Los ríos profundos (1958), by the Peruvian fosé María Arguedas, and Red Earth and Pouring Rain (1995), by the Indian Vikram Chandra. The adopted principles of comparison highlight the fact that both are bilingual writers who live and create in the conflictive zone linking cultures opposed by complex power relations. Transculturación narrativa : posibilidades de un concepto latinoamericano para la teoría y la literatura comparada intercultural

El propósito del presente trabajo se centra en la reivindicación del concepto de "transculturación" tal y como lo formuló el pensador cubano Fernando Ortiz en el ámbito antropológico, destacando la aplicación que el crítico uruguayo Ángel Rama llevó a cabo en referencia específica a la literatura de América Latina. En el devenir del "giro cultural" que actualmente revelan numerosas disciplinas (teoría de la literatura, literatura comparada, estudios lingüísticos, estudios de comunicación, estudios sobre traducción...), la transculturación no sólo ofrece ayuda como rico marco descriptivo, sino que puede llegar a suponer un sólido cimiento teórico-crítico en el ámbito de la crítica literaria comparada.__________________________________This paper aims at highlighting the concept of transculturation, as it was posed by the Cuban thinker Fernando Ortiz, in an anthropological sphere. Narrowing its focus, the paper emphasizes particularly the Uruguayan critic Ángel Rama's application of the concept to Latin American literature. In tune with the "cultural turn" that diverse disciplines evidence nowadays, we consider that transculturation not only offers a rich descriptive frame but also provides a sound theoretical and critical basis in the field of comparative literary criticism

Traducción, género y poscolonialismo : compromiso traductológico como mediación y affidamento femenino

En este trabajo nos proponemos reflexionar sobre la interrelación entre traducción, género y poscolonialismo, en concreto sobre el compromiso traductológico que algunas traductoras desarrollan en lo referente a la traducción de literatura de mujeres del llamado Tercer Mundo. Nuestro ejemplo será la labor y la experiencia de la crítica, teórica y traductora Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Al tiempo, trataremos de asociar este proyecto de ética traductora con el concepto feminista de affidamento.In this paper our aim is to reflect on the interrelation between translation, gender and postcolonialism, in particular on the translation engagement that some translators develop regarding the translation of literature by women from the so-called Third Word. Our example will be the work and experience of the critic, theoretician and translator Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.
