An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus
Following on from work on the European bryophyte Red List, the taxonomically and nomenclaturally updated spreadsheets used for that project have been expanded into a new checklist for the bryophytes of Europe. Methods. A steering group of ten European bryologists was convened, and over the course of a year, the spreadsheets were compared with previous European checklists, and all changes noted. Recent literature was searched extensively. A taxonomic system was agreed, and the advice and expertise of many European bryologists sought. Key results. A new European checklist of bryophytes, comprising hornworts, liverworts and mosses, is presented. Fifteen new combinations are proposed. Conclusions. This checklist provides a snapshot of the current European bryophyte flora in 2019. It will already be out-of-date on publication, and further research, particularly molecular work, can be expected to result in many more changes over the next few year
New national and regional bryophyte records, 74
Bryum renauldii was previously recorded from North America in USA and Mexico (Spence 2014), Central America in Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica (Allen 2002) and Cuba (Ochi 1980) and South America in Colombia (Churchill & Linares 1995), Bolivia (Churchill et al. 2009), and Brazil (Canestraro & Peralta 2022). This is the first reported for Argentina. The Argentinean plants exhibits distant leaves, with the apex obtuse, entire to obscurely serrulate; costae subpercurrent and margin bordered (1–2 lines of quadrate to rectangular cells). The species was found in the Colón Grande Island, one of the lower Uruguay River islands. This area is located in a transition region between a subtropical and a temperate climate. According to the Köppen-Geiger classification, it corresponds to a Cfa categorization, which implies humid climate with oceanic influence, without a marked dry season and warm summers (Aceñolaza et al. 2019). The vegetation corresponds to mixed gallery forest with Inga uraguensis Hook. & Arn., Nectandra angustifolia (Schrad.) Nees & Mart., Croton urucurana Baill., Pouteria gardneriana (A. DC.) Radlk. and Eugenia uruguayensis Cambess. (Rodriguez et al. 2018).Complete description and illustration of this species can be found in Ochi (1980), Allen (2002), Canestraro & Peralta (2022).Fil: Ellis, L. T.. Symphyogyna brasiliensis Nees (Argentina), New national and regional bryophyte records 59
The simple thalloid liverwort species, S. brasiliensis is considered the most common neotropical members of the genus (Gradstein et al, 2001). This report for the Argentinean forest correspond the more austral record for this species in the Andean region. In Argentina, S. brasiliensis was found in the Chaqueño Serrano forest in an intervalley area with patches of Yungas element growing on moist rock, beside a shaded damp streambanks.Although it presents a strong morphological variation, its procumbent habit, the entire margins of the thallus with marginal cells square to rectangular, are diagnostic characters in this species (Uribe & Aguirre, 1995).Fil: Ellis, L.T..
