Rating helicopter noise
The effectiveness of the EPNL procedure in quantifying helicopter blade slap and tail rotor noise heard on approach some distance from the flyover position is addressed. Alternative methods of rating helicopter noise are reviewed including correction procedures to the EPNL concept which account for blade slap and tail rotor noise. The impact of the use of such corrections is examined

Single photon states with arbitrarily fast asymptotic power-law fall-off of
energy density and photodetection rate are explicitly constructed. This goes
beyond the recently discovered tenth power-law of the Hellwarth-Nouchi photon
which itself superseded the long-standing seventh power-law of the Amrein

Cosmological Parameters from the Comparison of the 2MASS Gravity Field with Peculiar Velocity Surveys
We compare the peculiar velocity field within 65 Mpc predicted from
2MASS photometry and public redshift data to three independent peculiar
velocity surveys based on type Ia supernovae, surface brightness fluctuations
in ellipticals, and Tully-Fisher distances to spirals. The three peculiar
velocity samples are each in good agreement with the predicted velocities and
produce consistent results for \beta_{K}=\Omega\sbr{m}^{0.6}/b_{K}. Taken
together the best fit . We explore the effects of
morphology on the determination of by splitting the 2MASS sample into
E+S0 and S+Irr density fields and find both samples are equally good tracers of
the underlying dark matter distribution, but that early-types are more
clustered by a relative factor b\sbr{E}/b\sbr{S} \sim 1.6. The density
fluctuations of 2MASS galaxies in Mpc spheres in the local volume is
found to be \sigma\sbr{8,K} = 0.9. From this result and our value of
, we find \sigma_8 (\Omega\sbr{m}/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.91\pm0.12. This
is in excellent agreement with results from the IRAS redshift surveys, as well
as other cosmological probes. Combining the 2MASS and IRAS peculiar velocity
results yields \sigma_8 (\Omega\sbr{m}^/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.85\pm0.05.Comment: 11 pages, ApJ accepte

Alzheimer-associated presenilin-2 confers increased sensitivity to poptosis in PC12 cells
AbstractPresenilin-2 is a gene of unknown function recently identified based upon linkage with some forms of familial Alzheimer's disease. To investigate potential effects of PS-2 on cell viability, rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells were stably transfected with cDNA constructs encoding either full-length human PS-2 or, for comparison, mouse Bcl-xL. Overexpression of PS-2 conferred increased sensitivity to the apoptotic stimuli staurosporine and hydrogen peroxide. In contrast, Bcl-xL overexpression significantly reduced cell death induced by these stimuli. These results suggest that one function of PS-2 may involve modulation of cell viability

Proceedings of the Spacecraft Charging Technology Conference: Executive Summary
Aerospace environments are reviewed in reference to spacecraft charging. Modelling, a theoretical scheme which can be used to describe the structure of the sheath around the spacecraft and to calculate the charging currents within, is discussed. Materials characterization is considered for experimental determination of the behavior of typical spacecraft materials when exposed to simulated geomagnetic substorm conditions. Materials development is also examined for controlling and minimizing spacecraft charging or at least for distributing the charge in an equipotential manner, using electrical conductive surfaces for materials exposed to space environment
Spherical Vesicles Distorted by a Grafted Latex Bead: An Exact Solution
We present an exact solution to the problem of the global shape description
of a spherical vesicle distorted by a grafted latex bead. This solution is
derived by treating the nonlinearity in bending elasticity through the
(topological) Bogomol'nyi decomposition technique and elastic compatibility. We
recover the ``hat-model'' approximation in the limit of a small latex bead and
find that the region antipodal to the grafted latex bead flattens. We also
derive the appropriate shape equation using the variational principle and

Rhythm and Vowel Quality in Accents of English
In a sample of 27 speakers of Scottish Standard English two notoriously variable consonantal features are investigated: the contrast of /m/ and /w/ and non-prevocalic /r/, the latter both in terms of its presence or absence and the phonetic form it takes, if present. The pattern of realisation of non-prevocalic /r/ largely confirms previously reported findings. But there are a number of surprising results regarding the merger of /m/ and /w/ and the loss of non-prevocalic /r/: While the former is more likely to happen in younger speakers and females, the latter seems more likely in older speakers and males. This is suggestive of change in progress leading to a loss of the /m/ - /w/ contrast, while the variation found in non-prevocalic /r/ follows an almost inverse sociolinguistic pattern that does not suggest any such change and is additionally largely explicable in language-internal terms. One phenomenon requiring further investigation is the curious effect direct contact with Southern English accents seems to have on non-prevocalic /r/: innovation on the structural level (i.e. loss) and conservatism on the realisational level (i.e. increased incidence of [r] and [r]) appear to be conditioned by the same sociolinguistic factors

The social behaviour of interacting individuals is typically analysed as a series of multiple dyadic (pair-wise) interactions, rather than a network of interactions among multiple individuals. However, in species where parents feed dependant young, interactions within families nearly always involve more than two individuals simultaneously. Such social networks of interactions at least partly reflect conflicts of interest over the provision of costly parental investment. Consequently, variation in family network structure reflects variation in how conflicts of interest are resolved among family members. Despite its importance in understanding the evolution of emergent properties of social organization such as family life and cooperation, nothing is currently known about how selection acts on the structure of social networks. Here, we show that the social network structure of broods of begging nestling great tits Parus major predicts fitness in families. Although selection at the level of the individual favours large nestlings, selection at the level of the kin-group primarily favours families that resolve conflicts most effectively
