GuestCentric Systems and its internationalization to Brazil
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis thesis studies the internationalization process of GuestCentric Systems to Brazil. GuestCentric is currently in operational breakeven situation, but yet, it has excess capacity and targets a niche market that has a huge necessity on the product offered. The study conducted focus primarily on the origin context and then on the host country. First, it was addressed the environmental context of GuestCentric in the origin markets in order to infer the market functioning, the competitive analysis, the firm’s positioning along with other relevant subjects. Assumed that GuestCentric’ product was globally required and that the main criteria to internationalize were, among others, cultural similarities, market size dimension or potential growth, Brazil resulted as the most attractive country to internationalize for. A deeper analysis of Brazil was followed to find out the country’s macro environmental context and then and more precisely, how the Travel & Tourism Industry works (GC’s industry). Brazil proofed to be a very viable solution and the 2011 year an excellent and opportune time of entry. Some suggestions were than enumerated on how can GuestCentric best exploit its capabilities and resources and how the firm may operate in Brazil. Among them, is the creation of a direct sales channel, through a sales team, to increase sales propensity and effectiveness
Equity research: Netflix
We believe that the market expected the company to deliver growth that is unlikely to reach
as Netflix reaches saturation levels in the UCAN (United States and Canada) market and is
unable to increase the prices in the APAC (Asia Pacific) region

With the constant evolution of the Internet, the services it provides to users have been growing
exponentially in the last decade with the introduction of cellular networks of 3rd Generation and most
recently, 4th Generation (LTE). However, it is not all good news because with the increase in number
of services and users, the requests for network resources increased significantly, and some of these
features (in particular, bandwidth) cannot be fully utilized due to restrictions in the TCP/IP protocol
stack. These restrictions are especially at the level of the end systems and at the network itself.
One of the restrictions is the inability of TCP transport protocol to use multiple paths for sending data
between two or more systems over a TCP connection. It was based on this limitation that researchers
have developed an extension to TCP, designated by Multipath TCP (MPTCP), in order to allow the
use of multiple paths during a single TCP/IP session. This is expected to bring benefits in terms of
efficient use of resources within the network and thus improve the user experience through increasing
performance and attaining better resilience to network failures.
Many studies have been conducted based on the use of this new extension, ranging from the
analysis of core networks in order to demonstrate MPTCP versatility and adaptability in the use of
backup links, to the study of mobility cases, focusing on the usefulness of MPTCP before the movement
of mobile devices without occur losses of connectivity. However, none of the analysed articles
specifically addressed along with MPTCP operation of certain application protocols. Thus, the goal
of this work is to study the MPTCP extensions of TCP protocol and, based on two simple network
architectures, assess its added value regarding the quality of service (QoS) offered to applications.
The results presented here are meant primarily to demonstrate the potential of MPTCP under the
operation of an application protocol, File Transfer Protocol (FTP). This brings positive results in several
aspects, such as the significant decrease in transfer time of a given file, good load sharing in the
available routes, etc., all compared with the results achieved by TCP under the same conditions. The
positive results obtained, suggest that MPTCP brings QoS improvements to the functioning of FTP
Contribution for the validation of the portuguese version of EQ-5D
Introduction: The EQ-5D allows the achievement of two essential components of any measure of health-related quality of life to be used in cost-utility economic evaluations: (i) a profile describing the health status in terms of domains or dimensions; and (ii) a numeric value associated with the health status described. Aim: The Portuguese version of the EQ-5D questionnaire was completed in 1998, based on guidelines set by the EuroQol Group, including translation and back translation procedures. Despite its wide use in Portugal, until now it had not yet been published studies that initially led to the Portuguese version and the guarantee of acceptability, reliability and validity. The purpose of this article is to document these first values relating to the Portuguese version of the EQ-5D. Material and Methods: We used three different samples: a first one with 1,500 individuals representative of the Portuguese population; a second with 140 individuals just intended for the reliability test; and a third sample with 643 individual patients with cataracts, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. Results: The acceptability was assessed by the number of missing responses. It was also found a marked ceiling effect, with a large part of the sample not reporting any problems in the dimensions of the EQ-5D. Discussion: The construct validity was tested by examining the degree to which low values of EQ-5D were positively associated with increasing age, being female, and the sick, as well as the values of dimensions of the SF-36v2 scale. Convergent validity was based on correlations between EQ-5D values and other specific measures. The EQ-5D showed moderate to high correlations with other disease-specific measures of health status and health related quality of life. Conclusion: We can state that the Portuguese version of the EQ-5D has a good accessibility, reliability and validity in measuring health.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
farmacovigilância, no contexto do projeto Europeu EU-ADR. As contribuições
No contexto
campo do varíoma humano.
The demand for innovation in the biomedical software domain has been an
information technologies evolution driver over the last decades. The challenges
associated with the effective management, integration, analyses and
interpretation of the wealth of life sciences information stemming from modern
hardware and software technologies require concerted efforts. From gene
sequencing hardware to pharmacology research up to patient electronic health
records, the ability to accurately explore data from these environments is vital
to further improve our understanding of human health. This thesis encloses the
discussion on building better informatics strategies to address these
challenges, primarily in the context of service composition, including
warehousing and federation strategies for resource integration, as well as web
services or LinkedData for software interoperability.
Service composition is introduced as a general principle, geared towards data
integration and software interoperability. Concerning the latter, this research
covers the service composition requirements within the pharmacovigilance
field, namely on the European EU-ADR project. The contributions to this area,
the definition of a new interoperability standard and the creation of a new
workflow-wrapping engine, are behind the successful construction of the EUADR
Web Platform, a workspace for delivering advanced pharmacovigilance
studies. In the context of the European GEN2PHEN project, this research
tackles the challenges associated with the integration of heterogeneous and
distributed data in the human variome field. For this matter, a new lightweight
solution was created: WAVe, Web Analysis of the Variome, provides a rich
collection of genetic variation data through an innovative portal and an
advanced API. The development of the strategies underlying these products
highlighted clear opportunities in the biomedical software field: enhancing the
software implementation process with rapid application development
approaches and improving the quality and availability of data with the adoption
of the Semantic Web paradigm.
COEUS crosses the boundaries of integration and interoperability as it provides
a framework for the flexible acquisition and translation of data into a semantic
knowledge base, as well as a comprehensive set of interoperability services,
from REST to LinkedData, to fully exploit gathered data semantically. By
combining the lightness of rapid application development strategies with the
richness of its "Semantic Web in a box" approach, COEUS is a pioneering
framework to enhance the development of the next generation of biomedical
applications
