Designing a Tool To Know Invisible Resources: the Hyperguide Project, an XML Storyboard for Digital Collections Access
In this paper, we describe the Hyperguide project, an interactive push XML application for digital collection access, designed as a tool to know invisible resources in the web. Hyperguide enhances the accessibility of cultural and scientific webs for all users, overcoming present barriers in information seeking, addressing the need of improving web access, selection and filtering and usability of information resources in specific domains. The tool will be an interactive push application which provides the template to build a storyboard in XML to facilitate identification of selected web sites of heterogeneous nature
Urinary oxidative stress biomarkers in workers of a titanium dioxide based pigment production plant
Titanium dioxide is produced or imported into the EU for over one million tons/year. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification is 2B, a possible inhalation carcinogen for humans. This study evaluates urinary biomarkers of oxidative stress in workers of a plant producing TiO2 pigment powder, having 0.25 µm average particle size and an ultrafine fraction, compared to unexposed subjects. Urine samples were collected from forty workers before and after the shift, from six employees of the same company and eighteen volunteers from the same geographical area. Titanium and other metals concentrations were measured by ICP-MS, while DNA, RNA, and protein oxidation products by HPLC/MS-MS. A statistically significant increase was found for the urinary concentration of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ti, and Zr, and for all biomarkers of oxidative stress in post-shift workers' urine samples. Urinary concentrations after the working shift were higher than for employees and volunteers pooled together for Cd, Mn, and Zr, and for the oxidative stress biomarkers 8-oxoGuo, 8-oxodGuo, and 3NO2Tyr. Biomonitoring studies on dose and effect biomarkers for TiO2 occupational exposure provide information useful for protecting workers' health even in conditions that comply with health and safety standards, highlighting reversible effects of chronic exposure at very low doses
Hyperbaric exposure and oxidative Stress in occupational activities (HEOxS): the study protocol
Background: Hyperbaric exposure (HE) is proven to be a stressor to several mechanisms in living cells.
Even if after homeostasis restoration, harmful effects are expected, in particular a presence of free
radicals. These latter are the stimulus to negative phenomenon as inflammation or cancer. In Italy,
with 7500 km of sea shores, a large quantity of workers is exposed to HE during occupational
activities. A deep knowledge of HE and bodily effects is not well defined; hence a multidisciplinary
assessment of risk is needed. To detect one or more indicators of HE a research group is organised,
under the INAIL sponsorship. The research project focused on the oxidative stress (OxS) and this
paper details on the possible protocol to estimate, with a large amount of techniques on several
human liquids, the relationship between OxS and HE. Specific attention will be paid to identify
confounding factors and their influence.
Methods: Blood and urine will be sampled. Several lab techniques will be performed on samples, both
targeted, to measure the level of well-known biomarkers, and untargeted. Regard the formers:
products of oxidation of DNA and RNA in urine; inflammation and temperature cytokines and
protein carbonyles in blood. Untargeted evaluation will be performed for a metabolomics analysis in
urine. Confounding factors: temperature, body fat, fitness, allergies and dietary habits. These factors
will be assessed, directly or indirectly, prior and after HE. The final scope of the project is to determine
one or more indicators that relates to HE in hits twofold nature: depth and duration.
Conclusion: The relationship between OxS and HE is not deeply investigated and literature proposes
diverging results. The project aims to define the time dependence of biomarkers related to OxS, to
rise knowledge in risk assessment in workers exposed to HE
Prognostic factors of lung cancer in lymphoma survivors (the LuCiLyS study)
Background
Second cancer is the leading cause of death in lymphoma survivors, with lung cancer representing the most common solid tumor. Limited information exists about the treatment and prognosis of second lung cancer following lymphoma. Herein, we evaluated the outcome and prognostic factors of Lung Cancer in Lymphoma Survivors (the LuCiLyS study) to improve the patient selection for lung cancer treatment.
Methods
This is a retrospective multicentre study including consecutive patients treated for lymphoma disease that subsequently developed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Data regarding lymphoma including age, symptoms, histology, disease stage, treatment received and lymphoma status at the time of lung cancer diagnosis, and data on lung carcinoma as age, smoking history, latency from lymphoma, symptoms, histology, disease stage, treatment received, and survival were evaluated to identify the significant prognostic factors for overall survival.
Results
Our study population included 164 patients, 145 of which underwent lung cancer resection. The median overall survival was 63 (range, 58–85) months, and the 5-year survival rate 54%. At univariable analysis no-active lymphoma (HR: 2.19; P=0.0152); early lymphoma stage (HR: 1.95; P=0.01); adenocarcinoma histology (HR: 0.59; P=0.0421); early lung cancer stage (HR: 3.18; P<0.0001); incidental diagnosis of lung cancer (HR: 1.71; P<0.0001); and lung cancer resection (HR: 2.79; P<0.0001) were favorable prognostic factors. At multivariable analysis, no-active lymphoma (HR: 2.68; P=0.004); early lung cancer stage (HR: 2.37; P<0.0001); incidental diagnosis of lung cancer (HR: 2.00; P<0.0001); and lung cancer resection (HR: 2.07; P<0.0001) remained favorable prognostic factors. Patients with non-active lymphoma (n=146) versus those with active lymphoma (n=18) at lung cancer diagnosis presented better median survival (64 vs. 37 months; HR: 2.4; P=0.02), but median lung cancer specific survival showed no significant difference (27 vs. 19 months; HR: 0.3; P=0.17).
Conclusions
The presence and/or a history of lymphoma should not be a contraindication to resection of lung cancer. Inclusion of lymphoma survivors in a lung cancer-screening program may lead to early detection of lung cancer, and improve the survival
PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission): A White Paper on the Ultimate Polarimetric Spectro-Imaging of the Microwave and Far-Infrared Sky
PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to
ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and
L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1)
an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the
far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and
(2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS
instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the
new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated
during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem
include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters
extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and
temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the
classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into
the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present
unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the
universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB
blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible
effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial
power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due
to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of
power from larger length scales). These are but a few of the highlights of the
new science that will be made possible with PRISM.Comment: 20 pages Late
Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey
Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training. The sources have been identified in Planck data as sources colder than their environment. It has been built using the 48 months Planck data at 857, 545, and 353GHz combined with the 3THz IRAS data. The Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) DPC produced the 30, 44, and 70GHz maps after the completion of eight full surveys (spanning the period 12 August 2009 to 3 August 2013). In addition, special LFI maps covering the period 1 April 2013 to 30 June 2013 were produced in order to compare the Planck flux-density scales with those of the Very Large Array and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, by performing simultaneous observations of a sample of sources over that period. The High Frequency Instrument (HFI) DPC produced the 100, 143, 217, 353, 545, and 857GHz maps after five full surveys (2009 August 12 to 2012 January 11). (16 data files)
