Valuation monotonicity, fairness and stability in assignment problems [WP]

In this paper, we investigate the possibility of having stable rules for twosided markets with transferable utility, that satisfy some valuation monotonicity and fairness axioms. Valuation fairness requires that changing the valuation of a buyer for the object of a seller leads to equal changes in the payoffs of this buyer and seller. This is satisfied by the Shapley value, but is incompatible with stability. A main goal in this paper is to weaken valuation fairness in such a way that it is compatible with stability. It turns out that requiring equal changes only for buyers and sellers that are matched to each other before as well as after the change, is compatible with stability. In fact, we show that the only stable rule that satisfies weak valuation fairness is the well-known fair division rule which is obtained as the average of the buyers-optimal and the sellersoptimal payoff vectors. Our second goal is to characterize these two extreme rules by valuation monotonicity axioms. We show that the buyers-optimal (respectively sellersoptimal) stable rule is char- acterized as the only stable rule that satisfies buyervaluation monotonicity which requires that a buyer cannot be better off by weakly decreasing his/her valuations for all objects, as long as he is assigned the same object as before (respectively object-valuation antimonotonicity which requires that a buyer cannot be worse off when all buyers weakly decrease their valuations for the object that is assigned to this specific buyer, as long as this buyer is assigned the same object as before). Finally, adding a consistency axiom, the two optimal rules are characterized in the general domain of allocation rules for two-sided assignment markets with a variable population

This article aims to discuss to what extent the use of the case study method of research has been appropriately used in the field of business administration studies. To achieve this aim all articles based on the case study method presented in the XXVI Encontro Nacional de Pós-graduação em Administração (EnAnpad) were closely examined. The results show that the case study method has been used in almost all investigations within the field of business administration studies. Among the most critical aspects regarding this use is reference to very few different sources of evidence and also lack of accuracy in the analytical procedures. Only a few articles showed evidence of thorough analytical procedures. There is enough empirical evidence to suggest that researchers do require more specific background as for advantages and limitations in using the case study method, mainly in business administration master programs. Key words: business administration, research, case studies. Dominant influenza A(H3N2) and B/Yamagata virus circulation in EU/EEA, 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, respectively

    Get PDF
We use surveillance data to describe influenza A and B virus circulation over two consecutive seasons with excess all-cause mortality in Europe, especially in people aged 60 years and older. Influenza A(H3N2) virus dominated in 2016/17 and B/Yamagata in 2017/18. The latter season was prolonged with positivity rates above 50% among sentinel detections for at least 12 weeks. With a current west-east geographical spread, high influenza activity might still be expected in eastern Europe.S

Abstract— This work presents the design considerations for an electromyographic (EMG) sensor destined to be integrated in a low-cost robotic arm prosthetic for below-elbow amputation, which is being developed in Paraguay by a multidisciplinary teamwork. The design exposed on this paper is addressed to optimize the embedded 14 bits ADC of the MSP432P401R microcontroller. It achieves the amplification and filtering of EMG signals with an input-referred noise of 1.35 μVRMS, and a CMRR greater than 95 dB, with a very low quiescent current consumption of 40 μA. The sensor also includes a common-mode feedback circuit that drives a reference electrode.

Characterization of Drosophila ATPsynC mutants as a new model of mitochondrial ATP synthase disorders

Mitochondrial disorders associated with genetic defects of the ATP synthase are among the most deleterious diseases of the neuromuscular system that primarily manifest in newborns. Nevertheless, the number of established animal models for the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms behind such pathologies is limited. In this paper, we target the Drosophila melanogaster gene encoding for the ATP synthase subunit c, ATPsynC, in order to create a fruit fly model for investigating defects in mitochondrial bioenergetics and to better understand the comprehensive pathological spectrum associated with mitochondrial ATP synthase dysfunctions. Using P-element and EMS mutagenesis, we isolated a set of mutations showing a wide range of effects, from larval lethality to complex pleiotropic phenotypes encompassing developmental delay, early adult lethality, hypoactivity, sterility, hypofertility, aberrant male courtship behavior, locomotor defects and aberrant gonadogenesis. ATPsynC mutations impair ATP synthesis and mitochondrial morphology, and represent a powerful toolkit for the screening of genetic modifiers that can lead to potential therapeutic solutions. Furthermore, the molecular characterization of ATPsynC mutations allowed us to better understand the genetics of the ATPsynC locus and to define three broad pathological consequences of mutations affecting the mitochondrial ATP synthase functionality in Drosophila: i) pre-adult lethality; ii) multi-trait pathology accompanied by early adult lethality; iii) multi-trait adult pathology. We finally predict plausible parallelisms with genetic defects of mitochondrial ATP synthase in humans. This work was supported by grants from Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca (MIUR) to C.C. and University of Bari D.R. n. 12939 to D.P

    Schlafen 12 restricts HIV-1 latency reversal by a codon-usage dependent post-transcriptional block in CD4+ T cells

    Get PDF
Latency is a major barrier towards virus elimination in HIV-1-infected individuals. Yet, the mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of HIV-1 latency are incompletely understood. Here we describe the Schlafen 12 protein (SLFN12) as an HIV-1 restriction factor that establishes a post-transcriptional block in HIV-1-infected cells and thereby inhibits HIV-1 replication and virus reactivation from latently infected cells. The inhibitory activity is dependent on the HIV-1 codon usage and on the SLFN12 RNase active sites. Within HIV-1-infected individuals, SLFN12 expression in PBMCs correlated with HIV-1 plasma viral loads and proviral loads suggesting a link with the general activation of the immune system. Using an RNA FISH-Flow HIV-1 reactivation assay, we demonstrate that SLFN12 expression is enriched in infected cells positive for HIV-1 transcripts but negative for HIV-1 proteins. Thus, codon-usage dependent translation inhibition of HIV-1 proteins participates in HIV-1 latency and can restrict the amount of virus release after latency reversal. We thank Drs Yingying Li, Feng Gao and Beatrice H. Hahn for providing codon-optimized HIV-1 Gag expression vector, Drs James Hoxie and Susan Zolla-Pazner for supplying anti-Nef and -p24 antibodies, respectively through the NIH AIDS reagent program. We also thank Dr Song Gao for providing SLFN13-tRNA structure information, and Dr Maria-Eugenia Gas Lopez and Dr Ester Gea-Mallorquí for advise.
