Abstract: This work presents the conceptual development, the experimental evaluation and a field pilot application for a new technique to create in-situ EOR foams based on the injection of the foaming chemical dispersed in the gas stream. This new technique aims at simplifying and reducing costs for the deployment of EOR foams in gas injection based projects, and overcoming the disadvantage of limited reservoir volume of influence obtained during most of the conventional Surfactant Alternating Gas (SAG) implementations. The concept behind this new technique is the transfer of chemicals from the gas dispersed phase into the connate or residual waters present in the hydrocarbon reservoirs under exploitation, due mainly to the big chemical potential derived from the contrast in chemical concentration between the dispersed phase and the in-situ water. A systematic experimental work is presented for the first time, as far as the author is aware of, investigating the effect of the dispersed chemical (surfactant) concentration on the ability to create blocking foams at high pressure and temperature, and using representative consolidated porous medium and fluids coming from the Piedemonte fields. Results herein confirm that in fact it is possible to create blocking foam by injecting the foaming chemical dispersed in the gas stream into a consolidated sandstone core at residual oil and water conditions, after being submitted to a gas flooding displacement. This condition is obtained as far as the gas velocity is above a minimum threshold, and the concentration of the active chemical is above certain limit (138 ppm for this case). Successful experiments with foams created by gas dispersed surfactant showed much longer stability periods when compared with results from foams created by the SAG technique at much higher chemical concentration (2,000 ppm). On the other hand, results from dynamic adsorption tests showed similar equilibrium adsorption values when the foaming chemical is injected dispersed in the gas as compared with the liquid batch case, for comparable chemical concentrations. Application of this novel foams technique was implemented in a field pilot. About 600 Bbls of foaming solution at a rate of 1 Bbl/MM scf were injected in the hydrocarbon gas stream in one gas injector of a Piedemonte field for a period of two(2) months. Gas injectivity in the well was impaired after two weeks of injection, and the oil production well influenced by this injector changed its performance showing incremental oil production and flattening of the gas oil ratio (GOR) shortly after the dispersed chemical injection period. These results confirm that the new technique can be implemented at the field scale, and incremental production can be obtained from it in reservoirs operated under gas injection.Maestrí

Digital Image Processing Applied to Optical Measurements
Digital image processing is a useful tool that improves pictorial information for human interpretation and is mainly used for storage, transmission, and representation of different data. In this chapter, we want to introduce an optical technique which couples physical analysis with image processing for a measurement system. Optical methods were used to obtain the stress-strain relation by different invasive and noninvasive methods. This chapter talks about a novel noninvasive methodology to measure stress-strain evolution; this technique is based upon a single laser beam reflected on the cross section of ductile materials (steel and aluminum) while they are under a compression load. The way we measure one laser beam is by using the Gaussian beam propagation equations; we propose that the reflection area of the laser is going to change as the material surface area is compressed and we analyze these differences by using digital image processing. With this technique we are able to construct a stress-strain diagram
Analysing the natural population growth of a large marine mammal after a depletive harvest
An understanding of the underlying processes and comprehensive history of population growth after a harvest-driven depletion is necessary when assessing the long-term effectiveness of management and conservation strategies. The South American sea lion (SASL), Otaria flavescens, is the most conspicuous marine mammal along the South American coasts, where it has been heavily exploited. As a consequence of this exploitation, many of its populations were decimated during the early 20th century but currently show a clear recovery. The aim of this study was to assess SASL population recovery by applying a Bayesian state-space modelling framework. We were particularly interested in understanding how the population responds at low densities, how human-induced mortality interplays with natural mechanisms, and how density-dependence may regulate population growth. The observed population trajectory of SASL shows a non-linear relationship with density, recovering with a maximum increase rate of 0.055. However, 50 years after hunting cessation, the population still represents only 40% of its pre-exploitation abundance. Considering that the SASL population in this region represents approximately 72% of the species abundance within the Atlantic Ocean, the present analysis provides insights into the potential mechanisms regulating the dynamics of SASL populations across the global distributional range of the species.Fil: Romero, Maria Alejandra. Effect of protection and the nutrition on water parameters and yield in hydroponic coriander wild (Eryngium foetidum)
Moreno, Alajuela, Costa Rica.
(CP). Los Kc no fueron afectados por ambos
factores, obtuvieron valores máximos de 1,15 y
1,4 en etapas I y II, repectivamente.
Introduction. In Costa Rica, cultivation
practices in conventional wild coriander in open
field soil, make resource use inefficient and
reduce quality, safety and yields; therefore, an
alternative is the protected hydroponic crop.
Objective. The objective of this study was to
evaluate the effect of protection and nutrition on
water parameters: water use efficiency (WUE),
crop evapotranspiration (ETc
), drainage, crop
coefficients (Kc
) and the fresh yield of hydroponic
wild coriander. Materials and methods. The
study was conducted in 2016, at the Fabio Baudrit
Moreno Agricultural Experimental Station,
Alajuela, Costa Rica. It included 2 stages of
a crop, stage I, in dry season protected with
sarán and stage II in rainy season protected with
plastic. In both stages there were 4 treatments
that combined 2 environmental conditions, one with protection (CP) and the other unprotected
(SP), with 2 levels of nutrition: high (NA) and low
nutrient concentration (NB). A randomized 5
blocks design with bifactorial arrangement of 2
x 2 was used. Results. The yield was similar in
CP and SP, however, a lower ETc
in CP increased
the WUE. The ETc
was similar in both levels
of nutrition, however, due to higher yield, the
WUE in NA was superior. In stage I, drainage
was only affected by nutrition, being lower with
NB; In stage II, drainage decreased significantly
with plastic roof (CP). The Kc
were not affected
by both factors, obtaining maximum values of
1.15 and 1.4 in stages I and II, respectively.
Conclusion. The hydroponic cultivation system
represents an excellent alternative to the
conventional production system in soil and open
field, since it increased the WUE, product of an
appreciable reduction of the ETc
under protection
and a substantial increase in yields with high
nutrition level.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Estación Experimental Agrícola Fabio Baudrit Moreno (EEAFBM
Growth, evapotranspiration and use of nutrients of the hydroponic crop of Eryngium foetidum, in two different environments and nutrition levels
Introducción. La interacción entre genotipo,
clima y manejo agronómico determinan el
crecimiento del cultivo, y consecuentemente su
demanda hídrica y nutricional. Objetivo. Evaluar
Costa Rica. Comprendió 2 etapas del cultivo:
I) época seca protegido con sarán y II) época
una disminución de la lixiviación de nutrientes;
No
sacrificar rendimiento.. Introduction. The interaction
between genotype, climate and agronomic
management practices determines the growth
of the crop, and consequently its water and
nutritional demand. Objective. The effect of
protection and nutrition level on the growth,
use of nutrients and evapotranspiration in
the hydroponic crop of wild coriander, was
evaluated. Materials and methods. A study was
conducted in 2016, at the Fabio Baudrit Moreno
Agricultural Experimental Station, Alajuela,
Costa Rica. It comprised 2 consecutive stages of
a growing cycle: I) in dry season protected with
saran and II) rainy season covered with plastic.
Four treatments were applied that combined
2 environmental conditions: a protected crop
(PC) and another without protection (WP);
and 2 levels of nutrition: high (HN) and low concentration of nutrients (LN). A randomized
block design with a 2 x 2 bifactorial arrangement
was used. Dry matter (MS), leaf area index
(LAI) and crop growth rate (CGR), extraction,
leaching, efficiency recovery (ER), absorption
rate (AR) and absorption concentration (AC)
of nutrients and crop evapotranspiration (ETc
),
were evaluated. Results. Under protection,
improved ER due to increased growth (DM, LAI,
CGR) and absorption and decreased leaching; in
addition, AC increased by decreasing ETc
. With a
high level of nutrition, increased growth, nutrient
absorption and AC. However, the high increase
in leaching reduced RE. Conclusion. The highest
biomass production occurred in protected crops
with high nutrition (HN). However, with NA,
there was a noticeable increase in leaching that
reduced ER. The protection of the crop together
with the adjustment of the concentration of
nutrients from the CA, allowed to integrate
the growth with the consumption of water
and nutrients, which improves the ER without
Aquifer Management in Hydrocarbon Exploitation Operations
The exploration and production of hydrocarbons require the management of associated aquifers not only because they must be intercepted and isolated during the drilling process, but also because they can be used as reservoirs for the final disposal of connate water, or as a source to maintain the energy of reservoirs and enhanced oil recovery operations. Despite the technological advances in the management of aquifers in the hydrocarbon industry, these kinds of operations have not been free of risks and opposition. Primary oil exploitation, improved oil recovery, and disposal of remaining water operations usually involve medium and deep aquifers that have physical, chemical, and geomechanical characteristics that may differ greatly from those known in shallow aquifers. Therefore, a detailed study of the porous media as well as the contained, produced, or reinjected fluids is an obligation for the regulation compliments and the safe handling of these operations. This chapter deals with issues associated with the chemical interaction of water, the problems that may arise from an incorrect evaluation or management, and the phenomena that can show a problem or evolution in injection operations. Finally, corrective, and preventive treatments and procedures that are commonly used in the hydrocarbon industry are specified.Fil: Escobar Martínez, John Fernando. Mineralogical Characterization of Slags from the Oiola Site (Biscay, Spain) to Assess the Development in Bloomery Iron Smelting Technology from the Roman Period to the Middle Ages
The Oiola archeological site, located in the mining complex of La Arboleda (Biscay, North Spain)was an important iron smelting center from the Roman Period to the Middle Ages and even in more current times (19th–20th centuries). Tap-slags and some plano-convex slags were identified as smelting slags. Samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron-dispersive spectroscopy and Raman microspectroscopy to perform a mineralogical and textural characterization. Additionally, thermogravimetric and thermodiffraction analyses were carried out to determine furnace operating temperatures. The mineral assemblage reflects furnace temperatures and cooling rates and the addition of quartz as the main flux to decrease the melting temperature of the iron ore. The comparison of slags from the Roman Period and the Middle Age reveals changes in the pyrometallurgical process through time.H.P.-B. would like to thank the PRE-2019-2-0138 PhD research grant of the Basque Country Government and the SGIker service at the University of the Basque Countr
