Asthma awareness among primary school teachers in Zanjan in 2014
Background: Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease and a leading cause of school absenteeism. Awareness, attitude, and knowledge of asthma can play an effective role in controlling this disease and its consequences. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine the level of asthma awareness among primary school teachers in Zanjan.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 403 teachers of boys- and girls-only primary schools, who were selected using single-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire, in which higher scores indicated higher level of asthma awareness. Findings were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics in SPSS.
Results: Data analysis showed that 58 (14.4%) and 345 (85.6%) out of 403 participants were male and female, respectively. The means of age and work experience of the participants were 45±5.53 and 22±5.92 years old, respectively. In addition, teachers’ mean score for asthma awareness was at a good level (12±2.2). Teachers’ mean level of asthma awareness had a significant relationship with gender and history of dealing with asthmatic children (p = 0.03, p = 0.04), while it had no significant relationship with age, work experience, and education level.
Conclusion: In this study, the mean level of asthma awareness among the primary school teachers was good. Due to the importance of the disease in children and effective role of teachers in helping them, effective measures must be taken to increase teachers’ awareness
How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect the referral patterns for SPECT myocardial perfusion? A single center experience
Objective(s): We evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of referrals for SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT-MPI) as well as changes in the clinical and imaging characteristics. Methods: We respectively reviewed 1042 SPECT-MPI cases performed in a 4-month period during the COVID-19 pandemic (PAN; n=423) and compared their findings with those acquired in the same months before the pandemic (PRE; n=619).Results: The number of stress SPECT-MPI studies performed during the PAN period significantly dropped compared to the number of studies carried out in the PRE period (p = 0.014). In the PRE period, the rates of patients presenting with non-anginal, atypical and typical chest pain were 31%, 25% and 19%, respectively. The figures significantly changed in the PAN period to 19%, 42%, and 11%, respectively (all p-values <0.001). Regarding the pretest probability of coronary artery disease (CAD), a significant decrease and increase were noticed in patients with high and intermediate pretest probability, respectively (PRE: 18% and 55%, PAN: 6% and 65%, p <0.001 and 0.008, respectively). Neither the rates of myocardial ischemia nor infarction differed significantly in the PRE vs. PAN study periods. Conclusion: The number of referrals dropped significantly in the PAN era. While the proportion of patients with intermediate risk for CAD being referred for SPECT-MPI increased, those with high pretest probability were less frequently referred. Image parameters were mostly comparable between the study groups in the PRE and PAN periods
Electronic Transport Properties of Copper and Gold at Atomic Scale
The factors governing electronic transport properties of copper and gold atomic-size contacts are theoretically examined in the present work. A two-terminal conductor using crystalline electrodes is adopted. The non-equilibrium Green’s function combined with the density functional tight-binding method is employed via gDFTB simulation tool to calculate the transport at both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions. The crystalline orientation, length, and arrangement of electrodes have very weak influence on the electronic characteristics of the considered atomic wires. The wire width is found to be the most effective geometric aspect determining the number of conduction channels. The obtained conductance oscillation and linear current-voltage curves are interpreted. To analyze the conduction mechanism in detail, the transmission channels and their decomposition to the atomic orbitals are calculated in copper and gold single point contacts. The presented results offer a possible explanation for the relation between conduction and geometric structure. Furthermore, the results are in good agreement with available experimental and theoretical studies.
Critical value in surgical pathology: evaluating the current status in a multicenter study
Abstract Background The concept of critical value is not evident in surgical pathology, and there is no established protocol for determining, reporting, and documenting these results. Materials and methods A questionnaire was designed regarding critical value in surgical pathology, and all pathologists and some clinicians from five laboratories were asked to participate through an invitation link. The most important items were selected, and all pathologists were instructed to follow a standard operating procedure to deal with critical results for a year. Results A total of 43 pathologists and 44 non-pathologists participated in the study. Some critical or unexpected items were selected. Most participants agreed that the optimal time to announce critical reports is within 24Â h of establishing the final diagnosis, and a phone call was the most dependable communication option. In addition, the most qualified recipients were the attending physicians. Therefore, a written policy was implemented for a year. One hundred seventy-seven critical or unexpected cases (0.5%) were detected. Mucormycosis and cytomegalovirus (CMV) were the most frequent critical cases. Conclusion There are no set criteria for critical items or the reporting process in surgical pathology. It is possible to establish more uniform norms for reporting these cases by boosting pertinent research efforts and recruiting more pathologists and physicians. Additionally, it is advised that each medical facility compile its own unique critical or unexpected diagnosis list
Common Causes of Anaphylaxis in Children
Background Anaphylaxis is an acute, systemic, and potentially fatal allergic reaction. Many things can cause anaphylaxis potentially but some agents are more common like some foods (milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nut, shellfish, and fish), insect stings, medications, latex, and food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis. The goal of this study is to show the common causes of anaphylaxis among the children with anaphylaxis history who were referred to the Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute (IAARI) during a 4-year period (2005-2009).Methods and Materials During those 4 years, we registered all children (<14 years old) with a history of anaphylactic reaction. To prove the cause of anaphylaxis, we performed skin prick tests with suspected agents according to their history and measured specific IgE against them by the ImmunoCAP test. Recognition of common allergens was based on having a positive history for 1 allergen and positive skin prick test or specific IgE for that at the same time, or having positive results from both tests when the allergen was unclear. Idiopathic anaphylaxis was a reaction when any known allergen and positive tests were not obtained. Results One hundred ninety-three nonfatal anaphylactic attacks among 63 children were recognized. In total, the most current cause of anaphylaxis in children was food (89.7%). Milk (49.3%) and wheat (26.1%) were the most common. Other foods were egg (8.7%), nuts (2.8%), and spices (2.8%). Six children (8.7%) were sensitive to multiple food allergens like milk, egg, and wheat. Five (7.1%) of 63 patients had anaphylactic attack because of stinging. Wasp was the trigger in 3 (4.3%) of them and honeybee was the cause in 1 (1.4%). The last one was because of unknown hymenoptera. There were 2 idiopathic cases of all 63 patients. Conclusions Food allergens, especially milk and wheat, are the most common cause of anaphylaxis in children. Because anaphylaxis can be fatal, it is advisable to recognize its causes in different communities to prevent recurrent attacks. Keywords: anaphylaxis, common causes, childre
