    Paper Session I-C - Multifunctional Air Revitalization Systems

    The end goal in developing air revitalization systems is improved performance and enhanced capability to enable long-duration interplanetary life support. The evolution of current and near-term techniques is the most likely path to achieve future systems in which consumables are regenerated to effect weight and cost savings. Regenerative solid amine sorbents are now in use in the Space Shuttle Extended Duration Orbiter (EDO); currently, the solid amine performs only the carbon dioxide (CO2) removal function. Testing was conducted on solid amines to better understand the behavior during CO2 adsorption and the influences of trace contaminant gases. Tests were conducted, beginning hi 1991, using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) system and on a sorbent column linked to a mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph to ascertain the ability of the solid amine to remove CO2 and trace contaminants. Solid amine adsorption and desorption test data were obtained for trace contaminants representing corrosive and reactive compounds typical of space cabin atmospheres. Test results show that the solid amine has the ability to regeneratively remove trace contaminants, although some highly corrosive gases bond irreversibly. The TGA system proved to be a rapid, versatile method to screen trace contaminants for effects on solid amine; the column system provided more realistic conditions and analysis of off-gas products. Both analysis tools have provided initial capability to assess regenerative air revitalization techniques that may then be combined to create a multifunctional, closed-loop atmosphere purification system

    Mapping Children's Discussions of Evidence in Science to Assess Collaboration and Argumentation

    The research reported in this paper concerns the development of children's skills of interpreting and evaluating evidence in science. Previous studies have shown that school teaching often places limited emphasis on the development of these skills, which are necessary for children to engage in scientific debate and decision-making. The research, undertaken in the UK, involved four collaborative decision-making activities to stimulate group discussion, each was carried out with five groups of four children (10-11 years old). The research shows how the children evaluated evidence for possible choices and judged whether their evidence was sufficient to support a particular conclusion or the rejection of alternative conclusions. A mapping technique was developed to analyse the discussions and identify different "levels" of argumentation. The authors conclude that suitable collaborative activities that focus on the discussion of evidence can be developed to exercise children's ability to argue effectively in making decisions

    Involvement of an altered 5-HT -{6} receptor function in behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer's disease

    We studied the hypothesis that disturbances in 5-HT_{6} receptor function in the temporal cortex may contribute to clinical symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). 5-HT_{6} density and 5-HT levels were significantly decreased in a cohort of AD patients prospectively assessed for cognitive/behavioral symptoms. cAMP formation after stimulation with the selective 5-HT_{6} receptor agonist E-6801 was significantly lower (p<0.01) in AD (170.02 +/- 27.53 pmol/mg prot.) compared to controls (823.33 +/-196.67). In addition, the ratio cAMP formation after stimulation with E-6801/5-HT_{6} receptor density was significantly lower (p< 0.01) in AD (6.67 +/- 0.83) compared to controls (16.67 +/- 3.33). Splitting these results by sex, 5-HT_{6} receptor activation was significantly lower (p< 0.01) in AD females compared to males (121.67 +/- 30.02 vs. 231.67 +/- 34.17 pmol/mg prot). 5-HT_{6} density and 5-HT levels were significantly correlated (p < or = 0.01) in both controls and AD patients, although in AD, this correlation was lost in females. Psychosis factor was the best predictor of reduced 5-HT levels or adenylate cyclase activity after E-6801 stimulation, the former result being due to females. It may be suggested that psychotic symptoms may be related to a dysregulation of 5-HT_{6} activation by 5-HT in the temporal cortex. These results are discussed in terms of purported influence of sex and therapeutical approaches to psychosis in AD

    How natural forest conversion affects insect biodiversity in the Peruvian Amazon : can agroforestry help?

    The Amazonian rainforest is a unique ecosystem that comprises habitat for thousands of animal species. Over the last decades, the ever-increasing human population has caused forest conversion to agricultural land with concomitant high biodiversity losses, mainly near a number of fast-growing cities in the Peruvian Amazon. In this research, we evaluated insect species richness and diversity in five ecosystems: natural forests, multistrata agroforests, cocoa agroforests, annual cropping monoculture and degraded grasslands. We determined the relationship between land use intensity and insect diversity changes. Collected insects were taxonomically determined to morphospecies and data evaluated using standardized biodiversity indices. The highest species richness and abundance were found in natural forests, followed by agroforestry systems. Conversely, monocultures and degraded grasslands were found to be biodiversity-poor ecosystems. Diversity indices were relatively high for all ecosystems assessed with decreasing values along the disturbance gradient. An increase in land use disturbance causes not only insect diversity decreases but also complete changes in species composition. As agroforests, especially those with cocoa, currently cover many hectares of tropical land and show a species composition similar to natural forest sites, we can consider them as biodiversity reservoirs for some of the rainforest insect species

    ARPES: A probe of electronic correlations

    Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one of the most direct methods of studying the electronic structure of solids. By measuring the kinetic energy and angular distribution of the electrons photoemitted from a sample illuminated with sufficiently high-energy radiation, one can gain information on both the energy and momentum of the electrons propagating inside a material. This is of vital importance in elucidating the connection between electronic, magnetic, and chemical structure of solids, in particular for those complex systems which cannot be appropriately described within the independent-particle picture. Among the various classes of complex systems, of great interest are the transition metal oxides, which have been at the center stage in condensed matter physics for the last four decades. Following a general introduction to the topic, we will lay the theoretical basis needed to understand the pivotal role of ARPES in the study of such systems. After a brief overview on the state-of-the-art capabilities of the technique, we will review some of the most interesting and relevant case studies of the novel physics revealed by ARPES in 3d-, 4d- and 5d-based oxides.Comment: Chapter to appear in "Strongly Correlated Systems: Experimental Techniques", edited by A.     Analysis of Sample Correlations for Monte Carlo Rendering

    Modern physically based rendering techniques critically depend on approximating integrals of high dimensional functions representing radiant light energy. Monte Carlo based integrators are the choice for complex scenes and effects. These integrators work by sampling the integrand at sample point locations. The distribution of these sample points determines convergence rates and noise in the final renderings. The characteristics of such distributions can be uniquely represented in terms of correlations of sampling point locations. Hence, it is essential to study these correlations to understand and adapt sample distributions for low error in integral approximation. In this work, we aim at providing a comprehensive and accessible overview of the techniques developed over the last decades to analyze such correlations, relate them to error in integrators, and understand when and how to use existing sampling algorithms for effective rendering workflows.publishe

    Mergers and Acquisitions in Latin America: Industrial Productivity and Corporate Governance

    This paper examines the impact of industrial productivity on transnationals M&As from OECD countries towards Latin American countries in the period 1996 to 2010. It also analyzes the relationship between external mechanism of corporate governance and transnational M&As. For this purpose we use a gravitational model at the industry level. We find that industry productivity and higher standards of corporate governance in the country of origin promote transnational M&As activity. However, it is also found that higher levels of capital and technological productivity decreases transnational M&As activity

    The Winchcombe meteorite, a unique and pristine witness from the outer solar system.

    Direct links between carbonaceous chondrites and their parent bodies in the solar system are rare. The Winchcombe meteorite is the most accurately recorded carbonaceous chondrite fall. Its pre-atmospheric orbit and cosmic-ray exposure age confirm that it arrived on Earth shortly after ejection from a primitive asteroid. Recovered only hours after falling, the composition of the Winchcombe meteorite is largely unmodified by the terrestrial environment. It contains abundant hydrated silicates formed during fluid-rock reactions, and carbon- and nitrogen-bearing organic matter including soluble protein amino acids. The near-pristine hydrogen isotopic composition of the Winchcombe meteorite is comparable to the terrestrial hydrosphere, providing further evidence that volatile-rich carbonaceous asteroids played an important role in the origin of Earth's water
