In the current educational systems (including ours) is given much importance to the development of skills in the realm of the emotional, social and personal. This contrasts with traditional models based on instructional issues. Guidance in this area has an essential role for all students and especially for alumni / ae with special educational needs (SEN). In this communication we present a curriculum in an environment of social disadvantage

The theme around which to rotate this work is multiculturalism, ie the existence of several different cultures in one nation or in the same geographical reality that accepts and tolerates diversity maintaining the cultural identity of each and each of the minority groups. This phenomenon occurs in school due to current immigration movement. This first part is more theoretical and give her a second place to practice that will be offered a standard project for those centers that are displayed in various cultures. We intend that through it, our students (whether immigrants or not) are prepared to function in different social networks in which they participate in a dynamic dialogue, contact with other schools via video conference and exhibition, our students have the opportunity to learn more about other cultures

New Times, New Ways Of Teaching And Learning: Perception Of The EHEA And Pedagogical Discussion

    Get PDF
It is 2010, the established deadline of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The Bologna Process is an unstoppable reality. But we can not admit that this change, simply by being a significant change, must be for good. We can not also disregard the potential positive pedagogical reform the Bologna Process offers to us. Then, what is the reality of the Bologna Process in Spain? What is the perception of students and teachers? Are there differences in their responses regarding the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)? What are the pedagogical implications of these answers? This paper provides empirical evidences to these questions through the use of two questionnaires prepared ad hoc according to the pedagogical principles derived from the so-called Bologna Declaration

Objective. Redox imbalance contributes to bone fragility. We have evaluated the in vivo role of nuclear factor erythroid derived 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), an important regulator of cellular responses to oxidative stress, in bone metabolism using a model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods. Ovariectomy was performed in both wild-type and mice deficient in Nrf2 (Nrf2-/-). Bone microarchitecture was analyzed by CT. Serum markers of bone metabolism were also measured. Reactive oxygen species production was determined using dihydrorhodamine 123. Results. Sham-operated or ovariectomized Nrf2 -/- mice exhibit a loss in trabecular bone mineral density in femur, accompanied by a reduction in cortical area in vertebrae. Nrf2 deficiency tended to increase osteoblastic markers and significantly enhanced osteoclastic markers in sham-operated animals indicating an increased bone turnover with a main effect on bone resorption. We have also shown an increased production of oxidative stress in bone marrow-derived cells from sham-operated or ovariectomized Nrf2-/- mice and a higher responsiveness of bone marrow-derived cells to osteoclastogenic stimuli in vitro. Conclusion. We have demonstrated in vivo a key role of Nrf2 in the maintenance of bone microarchitectureThis work was supported by grants SAF2010-22048, SAF2010-17822, RD12/0043/0013 (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, ISCIII, FEDER), and Prometeo2010-047 (Generalitat Valenciana).

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is induced in many cell types as a defense mechanism against stress. We have investigated the possible role of endogenous HO-1 in the effector phase of arthritis using the K/BxN serum transfer model of arthritis in HO-1 heterozygous and homozygous knock-out mice. Methodology/Principal Findings. Arthritis was induced in C57/Black-6 xFVB (HO-1+/+, HO-1+/− and HO-1−/−) mice by intraperitoneal injection of 150 µl serum from arthritic K/BxN mice at days 0 and 2. Blood was collected and animals were sacrificed at day 10. Histological analysis was performed in ankle sections. The levels of inflammatory mediators were measured in serum and paw homogenates by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or Multiplex technology. The incidence of arthritis was higher in HO-1+/− and HO-1−/− groups compared with HO-1+/+. The inflammatory response was aggravated in HO-1+/− mice as shown by arthritic score and the migration of inflammatory cells that could be related to the enhancement of CXCL-1 production. In addition, the HO-1+/− group showed proteoglycan depletion significantly higher than HO-1+/+ mice. Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, E-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 were increased in arthritic HO-1−/− mice, whereas vascular endothelial growth factor and some cytokines such as interferon-γ showed a reduction compared to HO-1+/+ or HO-1+/− mice. In addition, down-regulated gene expression of ferritin, glutathione S-reductase A1 and superoxide dismutase-2 was observed in the livers of arthritic HO-1+/− animals

Role of age and sex in the diagnosis of early-stage malignant melanoma: A cross-sectional study

    Get PDF
Age and sex have been identified as predictors of outcome in malignant melanoma (MM). The aim of this multicentre, cross-sectional study was to analyse the role of age and sex as explanatory variables for the diagnosis of thin MM. A total of 2,430 patients with MM were recruited. Cases of in situ (Tis) and T1 MM were more frequent than T2–T4 MM (56.26% vs. 43.74%). Breslow thickness increased throughout decades of life (analysis of variance (ANOVA) p < 0.001), with a weak correlation between Breslow thickness and patient's age (r = 0.202, p < 0.001). Breslow thickness was significantly less in women (1.79 vs. 2.38 mm, p = 0.0001). Binary logistic regression showed a significant (p < 0.001) odds ratio for age 0–29 years (1.18), and 30–59 years (1.16), and for women (1.09). Age and sex explained 3.64% of the variation observed in Tis–T1 frequency (R2 = 0.0364). Age and sex appear to explain a low percentage of the variation in the early detection of MM

ABSTRACTThis article results of the study of the implantation an educational mediation service in a Secondary School in Alicante during the academic year 2009/10. Its purpose is to value the efficiency of a collective action, which tries to make effective the educational aims of prevention, development and social intervention. To carry out this research, a qualitative methodology has been used, based on the study of the results of a questionnaire completed by twenty-six students, who have participated in this programme. The results of that tool have been processed through the qualitative programme named AQUAD 6 (Huber, 2006). This programme contributes greatly to this research because it establishes several categories to understand better the main objective of it. Crucial aspects such as participation’s reason, the conflict’s origin, generated feelings, and the offers of improvement are valued. Objective: To study the composition, surface characteristics and response to removal torque of an implant surface subjected to hydrofluoric acid etching and posterior passivating with hydrofluoric and nitric acid. Study design: Twelve implants were initially selected and their physico-chemical characteristics were evaluated by means of energy-dispersive X-rays (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, 24 implants ' 12 measuring 8 mm and 12 measuring 10 mm in length ' were implanted in 6 Beagle dogs. Twelve implants were removed after a recovery period of 6 weeks, followed by removal of the remaining 12 implants after 12 Medeweeks, using a torque calibrator (Gauge Tonichi® model BGT150CN-S) with a force registry range of 0-150 Ncm. Results: EDS analysis of the surface chemical composition only revealed the presence of titanium in the etched surfaces. In the same way as with the surfaces of other dental implants, XPS analysis revealed traces of other elements present in the surface, fundamentally carbon. Following dual acid etching, the surface showed the roughness resulting from acid action, with a morphology that proved to be quite homogeneous. The roughness values obtained exceeded 1 ìm. The mean removal torque values after 6 weeks were 79.7 Ncm for the 8 mm implants and 115 Ncm for the 10 mm implants. After 12 weeks, these values increased to 101.2 Ncm and 139.7 Ncm, respectively. Conclusions: Hydrofluoric and nitric acid etching affords optimum surface characteristics comparable to those of other surfaces. The recorded removal torque values raise the possibility of human clinical application for early or immediate loading procedures
