    The use of yeast inoculation in fermentation for port production; effect on total potential ethyl carbamate

    A commercial wine yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae UCD 522 (pre-cultured in the presence of certain mass-labelled amino acids) was inoculated into a port must which was then allowed to ferment under controlled conditions of temperature and agitation. The influence of potential ethyl carbamate (EC) precursor formed due to yeast pre-culture, upon total potential EC levels was studied at various stages of fermentation. Pre-culture accumulation did not give rise to detectable levels of EC precursor during port fermentation

    Compression and intelligence: social environments and communication

    Compression has been advocated as one of the principles which pervades inductive inference and prediction - and, from there, it has also been recurrent in definitions and tests of intelligence. However, this connection is less explicit in new approaches to intelligence. In this paper, we advocate that the notion of compression can appear again in definitions and tests of intelligence through the concepts of `mind-reading¿ and `communication¿ in the context of multi-agent systems and social environments. Our main position is that two-part Minimum Message Length (MML) compression is not only more natural and effective for agents with limited resources, but it is also much more appropriate for agents in (co-operative) social environments than one-part compression schemes - particularly those using a posterior-weighted mixture of all available models following Solomonoff¿s theory of prediction. We think that the realisation of these differences is important to avoid a naive view of `intelligence as compression¿ in favour of a better understanding of how, why and where (one-part or two-part, lossless or lossy) compression is needed.We thank the anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments, and we thank Kurt Kleiner for some challenging and ultimately very helpful questions in the broad area of this work.     The Psychiatry Access Center: A New Opportunity for Innovative Residency Training

    A recently introduced PGY-1 rotation in an innovative, managed care oriented program offers many training advantages for residents. The rotation offers first-year residents intensive interviewing-skills training, experience with obtaining and documenting the psychiatric history and physical examination, and in the process, offers early exposure to a managed care environment. The Psychiatry Access Center employs non-resident clinicians to perform urgent evaluations and all admissions to the main psychiatric hospital. The service has been tested successfully without requiring resident work, and therefore allows the integration of residents into the system via a new rotation designed to focus exclusively on educational needs

    Music Information Technology and Professional Stakeholder Audiences: Mind the Adoption Gap

    The academic discipline focusing on the processing and organization of digital music information, commonly known as Music Information Retrieval (MIR), has multidisciplinary roots and interests. Thus, MIR technologies have the potential to have impact across disciplinary boundaries and to enhance the handling of music information in many different user communities. However, in practice, many MIR research agenda items appear to have a hard time leaving the lab in order to be widely adopted by their intended audiences. On one hand, this is because the MIR field still is relatively young, and technologies therefore need to mature. On the other hand, there may be deeper, more fundamental challenges with regard to the user audience. In this contribution, we discuss MIR technology adoption issues that were experienced with professional music stakeholders in audio mixing, performance, musicology and sales industry. Many of these stakeholders have mindsets and priorities that differ considerably from those of most MIR academics, influencing their reception of new MIR technology. We mention the major observed differences and their backgrounds, and argue that these are essential to be taken into account to allow for truly successful cross-disciplinary collaboration and technology adoption in MIR

    Cardiac-MRI predicts clinical worsening and mortality in pulmonary arterial hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objectives This meta-analysis evaluates assessment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with a focus on clinical worsening and mortality. Background Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has prognostic value in the assessment of patients with PAH. However, there are limited data on the prediction of clinical worsening, an important composite endpoint used in PAH therapy trials. Methods The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were searched in May 2020. All CMR studies assessing clinical worsening and the prognosis of patients with PAH were included. Pooled hazard ratios of univariate regression analyses for CMR measurements, for prediction of clinical worsening and mortality, were calculated. Results Twenty-two studies with 1,938 participants were included in the meta-analysis. There were 18 clinical worsening events and 8 deaths per 100 patient-years. The pooled hazard ratios show that every 1% decrease in right ventricular (RV) ejection fraction is associated with a 4.9% increase in the risk of clinical worsening over 22 months of follow-up and a 2.2% increase in the risk of death over 54 months. For every 1 ml/m2 increase in RV end-systolic volume index or RV end-diastolic volume index, the risk of clinical worsening increases by 1.3% and 0.7%, respectively, and the risk of mortality increases by 0.9% and 1%. Every 1 ml/m2 decrease in left ventricular end-systolic volume index or left ventricular end-diastolic volume index increased the risk of death by 2.1% and 2.3%. Left ventricular parameters were not associated with clinical worsening. Conclusions This review confirms CMR as a powerful prognostic marker in PAH in a large cohort of patients. In addition to confirming previous observations that RV function and RV and left ventricular volumes predict mortality, RV function and volumes also predict clinical worsening. This study provides a strong rationale for considering CMR as a clinically relevant endpoint for trials of PAH therapies

    Measuring the Gaps in the Projected Image and Perceived Image of Rural Tourism Destinations in China’s Yangtze River Delta

    Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) at all levels have an ultimate goal of building strong and positive images for their destinations. However, the projected image from the supply side is not necessarily the mirror of the perceived image from the demand side. This study adopted the content analysis method to evaluate the projected image and perceived image of rural destinations in China to see whether there is any discrepancy between and within the two categories. Comparative analysis of different information sources including web contents and on-site visitor interviews were processed. The evaluation of image congruency demonstrates that official websites focus more on cognitive image elements (knowledge and beliefs of the place). Besides promoting attractions, it provides information on geography background and promotes local culture. Business web content promotes attractions, package tour, and activities which can generate revenue. The perceived image includes more sentiment contents: on-site visitors expressed more negative attitude, but social media comments are relatively positive.     Ab initio study of the beta$-tin->Imma->sh phase transitions in silicon and germanium

    We have investigated the structural sequence of the high-pressure phases of silicon and germanium. We have focussed on the cd->beta-tin->Imma->sh phase transitions. We have used the plane-wave pseudopotential approach to the density-functional theory implemented within the Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP). We have determined the equilibrium properties of each structure and the values of the critical parameters including a hysteresis effect at the phase transitions. The order of the phase transitions has been obtained alternatively from the pressure dependence of the enthalpy and of the internal structure parameters. The commonly used tangent construction is shown to be very unreliable. Our calculations identify a first-order phase transition from the cd to the beta-tin and from the Imma to the sh phase, and they indicate the possibility of a second-order phase-transition from the beta-tin to the Imma phase. Finally, we have derived the enthalpy barriers between the phases.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure

    Shear-Mediated Dilation of the Internal Carotid Artery Occurs Independent of Hypercapnia.

    Evidence for shear stress as a regulator of carotid artery dilation in response to increased arterial carbon dioxide was recently demonstrated in humans during sustained elevations in CO2 (hypercapnia); however, the relative contributions of CO2 and shear stress to this response remains unclear. We examined the hypothesis that, following a 30-second transient increase in arterial CO2 tension and consequent increase in internal carotid artery shear stress, internal carotid artery diameter would increase, indicating shear-mediated dilation, in the absence of concurrent hypercapnia. In 27 healthy participants the partial pressures of end-tidal O2 and CO2, ventilation (pneumotachography), blood pressure (finger-photoplethysmography), heart-rate (electrocardiogram), internal carotid artery flow, diameter and shear stress (high resolution duplex ultrasound) and middle cerebral artery blood velocity (transcranial Doppler) were measured during 4-minute steady state and transient 30-second hypercapnic tests (both +9mmHg CO2). Internal carotid artery dilation was lower in the transient, compared to the steady state hypercapnia (3.3±1.9% vs. 5.3±2.9%, respectively; P<0.03). Increases in internal carotid artery shear stress preceded increases in diameter in both the transient (time: 16.8±13.2s vs. 59.4±60.3s; P<0.01) and steady state (time: 18.2±14.2s vs. 110.3±79.6s; P<0.01) tests. Internal carotid artery dilation was positively correlated with shear rate area under the curve in the transient (r(2)=0.44; P<0.01), but not steady state (r(2)=0.02; P=0.53) trial. Collectively, these results suggest that hypercapnia induces shear-mediated dilation of the internal carotid artery in humans. This study further promotes the application and development of hypercapnia as a clinical strategy for the assessment of cerebrovascular vasodilatory function and health in humans
