Moreover, it clearly differentiates the wines according to their varietal origin and production area. An annual difference is also observed and a synergic effect is shown to exist between Grenache Noir and Carignan or SamsĂł

Comparing biofuels through the lens of sustainability: A data envelopment analysis approach

Liquid biofuels can facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable transportation sector by curbing carbon emissions while maintaining most of the current vehicle fleet. Today, a myriad of alternatives are available to produce biofuels, where different decisions for the fuel type, blend, conversion process and carbon source will affect the final cost and environmental impact of the product. In this contribution, we analyze the performance of 72 different biofuels routes based on 12 indicators that cover the three sustainability dimensions: economic, environmental and social. The proposed multi-criteria approach combines Data Envelopment Analysis with Life Cycle Assessment to evaluate biofuels from a cradle-to-wheel perspective, that is, considering the production chain spanning from biomass production to the combustion of the biofuel in the engine. Results reveal that there are 35 biofuels routes performing better than the rest, with renewable diesel being a better option than ethanol-based blends or biodiesel, and waste biomass preferred over cellulosic biomass or bio-oils. The selection of the carbon source proofed to be the most important decision, highlighting the need to consider regional aspects related to soil and climate before promoting a certain biofuel. Overall, our results can help to derive effective policies for the adoption of biofuels attaining the best performance at minimum cost and environmental risks.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

Motivation for a lifestyle change with the inclusion of physical activity in the outdoor environment: a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis.

    No full text
Objective: This systematic review with a three-level mixed-effects meta-analysis examined the characteristics of the programs designed to promote physical activity (PA) outdoors, seeking to identify the characteristics associated with greater health benefits, as well as the motivational strategies used to go along with the interventions. Methods: A systematic search in three electronic databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, and SCOPUS) of articles published from January 2008 to January 2020 were conducted. Two reviewers independently performed screenings, data extraction, and risk of bias (RoB) assessment of 23 studies. The meta-analysis analyzed conceptual and methodological variables that could moderate the benefits of PA in outdoor environment programs. Results: Outdoor physical activity PA-based programs have moderate effects on physical functionality and quality of life, as well as strong effects on self-concept and affectivity. A higher age and a male gender were identified in the mediation analysis as favorable conditions for the health effects. Counterintuitively, the use of motivational strategies was related to a reduction in the therapeutic benefits. Conclusions: This systematic reviews and meta-analysis analyzed the intrinsic characteristics of the programs designed to promote outdoor PA. The explicit consideration of motivational, affective or cognitive processes as possible mediating factors of adherence to participation is recommended both in the design and in the evaluation of the programs. Their great heterogeneity in the design and in the outcomes evaluated makes comparability difficult

Effect of synchronous remote-based interventions on suicidal behaviours : protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

Altres ajuts: FundaciĂłn Parc TaulĂ, SENDO PI21/01148 (Fondo de InvestigaciĂłn Sanitaria-ISCiii/FEDER)Introduction Suicide is among the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. The impact of suicide affects the personal, social and economic levels. Therefore, its prevention is a priority for public health systems. Previous studies seem to support the efficacy of providing active contact to people who have made a suicide attempt. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the efficacy of distance suicide prevention strategies implemented through synchronous technology-based interventions. Methods and analysis: This protocol is designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. The bibliographical searches were conducted in the databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science in April 2022, with no restrictions on the time of publication and limited to publications in English or Spanish. The search strategy was performed using free-text terms and Medical Subject Headings terms: suicide, follow-up, synchronous, remote, telehealth, telephone, hotline, video-conference and text message. Two reviewers will independently conduct study screening, selection process, data extraction and risk of bias assessment. The analysis and synthesis of the results will be both qualitative and quantitative. A narrative synthesis, presented in a comprehensive table, will be performed and meta-analysis will be conducted, as appropriate, if sufficient data are provided. Ethics and dissemination: The present review and meta-analysis will not require ethical approval, as it will use data collected from previously published primary studies. The findings of this review will be published in peer-reviewed journals and widely disseminated
