Precision measurement of the top quark mass from dilepton events at CDF II

    Get PDF
We report a measurement of the top quark mass, M_t, in the dilepton decay channel of ttˉb+νbˉνˉt\bar{t}\to b\ell'^{+}\nu_{\ell'}\bar{b}\ell^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\ell} using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} of p\bar{p} collisions collected with the CDF II detector. We apply a method that convolutes a leading-order matrix element with detector resolution functions to form event-by-event likelihoods; we have enhanced the leading-order description to describe the effects of initial-state radiation. The joint likelihood is the product of the likelihoods from 78 candidate events in this sample, which yields a measurement of M_{t} = 164.5 \pm 3.9(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 3.9(\textrm{syst.}) \mathrm{GeV}/c^2, the most precise measurement of M_t in the dilepton channel.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, version includes changes made prior to publication by journa

    Get PDF
We present a new method for studying high-pTp_T dilepton events (e±ee^{\pm}e^{\mp}, μ±μ\mu^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}, e±μe^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}) and simultaneously extracting the production cross sections of ppˉttˉp\bar{p} \to t\bar{t}, ppˉW+Wp\bar{p} \to W^+W^-, and p\bar{p} \to \ztt at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV. We perform a likelihood fit to the dilepton data in a parameter space defined by the missing transverse energy and the number of jets in the event. Our results, which use 360pb1360 {\rm pb^{-1}} of data recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, are σ(ttˉ)=8.52.2+2.7\sigma(t\bar{t}) = 8.5_{-2.2}^{+2.7} pb, σ(W+W)=16.34.4+5.2\sigma(W^+W^-) = 16.3^{+5.2}_{-4.4} pb, and \sigma(\ztt) =291^{+50}_{-46} pb.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, to be submitted to PRD-R

Measurement of the Ratios of Branching Fractions B(Bs -> Ds pi pi pi) / B(Bd -> Dd pi pi pi) and B(Bs -> Ds pi) / B(Bd -> Dd pi)

    Get PDF
Using 355 pb^-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector in \ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, we study the fully reconstructed hadronic decays B -> D pi and B -> D pi pi pi. We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(Bs -> Ds pi pi pi) / B(Bd -> Dd pi pi pi) = 1.05 pm 0.10 (stat) pm 0.22 (syst). We also update our measurement of B(Bs -> Ds pi) / B(Bd -> Dd pi) to 1.13 pm 0.08 (stat) pm 0.23 (syst) improving the statistical uncertainty by more than a factor of two. We find B(Bs -> Ds pi) = [3.8 pm 0.3 (stat) pm 1.3 (syst)] \times 10^{-3} and B(Bs -> Ds pi pi pi) = [8.4 pm 0.8 (stat) pm 3.2 (syst)] \times 10^{-3}.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Limits on Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    Get PDF
We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ boson production. The boson pairs are produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350 pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wgamma boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18 < lambda < 0.17 and -0.46 < Delta kappa < 0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cut-off scale Lambda=1.5 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Measurement of the Top-Quark Mass in All-Hadronic Decays in p pbar Collisions at CDF II

    Get PDF
We present a measurement of the top-quark mass, MtopM_{\mathrm{top}}, in the all-hadronic decay channel ttˉW+bWbˉq1qˉ2bq3qˉ4bˉt\bar{t} \to W^+b W^- \bar{b} \to q_1\bar{q}_2 b q_3 \bar{q}_4 \bar{b}. The analysis is performed using 310 pb1^{-1} of s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV ppˉp\bar{p} collisions collected with the CDF II detector using a multi-jet trigger. The mass measurement is based on an event-by-event likelihood which depends on both the sample purity and the value of the top-quark mass, using 90 possible jet-to-parton assignments in the six-jet final state. The joint likelihood of 290 selected events yields a value of MtopM_{\mathrm{top}}=177.1 ±\pm 4.9 (stat.) ±\pm 4.7 (syst.) GeV/c2c^2.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures and 1 table, Submitted to Phys. Rev. Observation of WZ Production

    Get PDF
We report the first observation of the associated production of a W boson and a Z boson. This result is based on 1.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe 16 WZ candidates passing our event selection with an expected background of 2.7 +/- 0.4 events. A fit to the missing transverse energy distribution indicates an excess of events compared to the background expectation corresponding to a significance equivalent to six standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(ppbar -> WZ) = 5.0^{+1.8}_{-1.6} pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

Teaching About Health Care Disparities in the Clinical Setting

    Get PDF
Clinical teachers often observe interactions that may contribute to health care disparities, yet may hesitate to teach about them. A pedagogical model could help faculty structure teaching about health care disparities in the clinical setting, but to our knowledge, none have been adapted for this purpose. In this paper, we adapt an established model, Time-Effective Strategies for Teaching (TEST), to the teaching of health care disparities. We use several case scenarios to illustrate the core components of the model: diagnose the learner, teach rapidly to the learner’s need, and provide feedback. The TEST model is straightforward, easy to use, and enables the incorporation of teaching about health care disparities into routine clinical teaching

Reservists and veterans: Viewed from within and without

    Get PDF
This chapter describes two important groups relative to military service – reservists and veterans. Definitions are provided regarding who is a member of each group. A summary of past and current research findings for each group is provided. The summary is organized by investigative topics or themes, which provide the current scope of the field for reservists and for veterans. Finally, approaches to the study of reservists and veterans are described, along with challenges – both substantively and methodologically – for future research studies. These serve as fertile areas for improvements and investigations in future research studies

First measurement of the ratio of central-electron to forward-electron W partial cross sections in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

    Get PDF
We present a measurement of sigma(p (p) over bar -\u3e W)xB(W -\u3e e nu) at root s=1.96 TeV, using electrons identified in the forward region (1.2 \u3c|eta|\u3c 2.8) of the CDF II detector, in 223 pb(-1) of data. We measure sigma xB=2796 +/- 13(stat)(-90)(+95)(syst)+/- 162(lum) pb. Combining this result with a previous CDF measurement obtained using electrons in the central region (|eta|less than or similar to 1), we present the first measurement of the ratio of central-electron to forward-electron W partial cross sections R-exp=0.925 +/- 0.006(stat)+/- 0.032(syst), consistent with theoretical predictions using Coordinated Theoretical-Experimental Project on QCD (CTEQ) and Martin-Roberts-Stirling-Thorne (MRST) parton distribution functions

We present a new measurement of the B+B^+ meson differential cross section dσ/dpTd\sigma/d p_T at s=1960\sqrt{s}=1960 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 739pb1^{-1} collected with the upgraded CDF detector (CDF II) at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. B+B^+ candidates are reconstructed through the decay B+J/ψK+B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, with J/ψμ+μJ/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^-. The integrated cross section for producing B+B^+ mesons with pT6p_T \geq 6 GeV/c and y1|y| \leq 1 is measured to be 2.78±0.24μ2.78 \pm 0.24 \mubComment: 28 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures Submitted to Phys.
