    Gender relations and inequalities in the Amazon: The potential of geospatial systems to address gender inequalities

    In order for geospatial services to reach their full potential to benefit the people and the environment of the Amazon at multiple scales (regional, national, sub-national, community) by supporting communities in monitoring their territories and addressing the various challenges they face (such as deforestation, illegal mining, climate change, and biodiversity loss), it is important to have an inclusive vision that considers both the situation of local women and other actors in the region. These actions can improve local capacity in the use and exploitation of satellite data and geospatial information to facilitate, strengthen, and promote sustainable natural resource management throughout the Amazon

    El Grupo de Diálogo, Minería y Desarrollo Sostenible (GDMDS) como experiencia democrática deliberativa en los procesos socioambientales del Perú, en el siglo XXI

    En el Grupo de Diálogo Minería y Desarrollo Sostenible (GDMDS), personas ubicadas en distintas posiciones de la estructura social (empresarios y gerentes mineros, líderes sociales y comuneros, funcionarios del Estado, profesionales de ONG y consultores), de diversas regiones de Perú, de-construyen y reconstruyen la visión sobre el “otro” mientras dialogan sobre minería y desarrollo sostenible, o realizan, en momentos puntuales, acciones de incidencia. La experiencia del GDMDS se inició hace 17 años, cinco gobiernos, y actualmente inspira la actuación de plataformas de diálogo multiactor en siete países de Sudamérica. ¿Cómo comprender sociológicamente el surgimiento y permanencia del GDMDS en un contexto de alta conflictividad socioambiental? Nuestra hipótesis ha sido que el GDMDS es un espacio multiactor en el que se genera una cultura dialógica y prácticas de democracia deliberativa con potencialidad para la transformación de los conflictos socioambientales. Hemos abordado la investigación desde conceptos y perspectivas que priorizan el estudio del sujeto, recurriendo a autores como Alfred Schutz, Jürgen Habermas, Adela Cortina y John Paul Lederach, adoptando una metodología principalmente cualitativa. Nuestra investigación tiene como marco el desarrollo de la gran minería en una fase expansiva, desde inicios del presente siglo, proceso marcado por el crecimiento de las variables macro económicas, pero con alta conflictividad socioambiental. La interacción individual y grupal sin ambición de resultados inmediatos, el liderazgo emergente de tendencia dialogante, y los procedimientos internos que dejaban sin sentido una eventual pugna por hegemonías, favorecieron una cultura interna con escucha mutua, respeto a las opiniones, empatía, igualdad de trato y postura dialógica, que al repetirse dieron vida a un espacio de diálogo cívico. Puede interpretarse que nos encontramos frente a una experiencia deliberativa de carácter público privado. Más allá del caso de estudio, se quiere llamar la atención sobre la necesidad de estudiar sociológicamente el diálogo social.Tesi

    Aplicación de materiales híbridos en pera (Pyrus communis L.) contaminada con fuego bacteriano

    Una de las causas de las perdidas post-cosecha se debe a enfermedades que producen los microorganismos. El fuego bacteriano, es una enfermedad causada por la bacteria fitopatógena Erwinia amylovora que ataca principalmente a manzanas y peras. Para el control de esta enfermedad se utilizan dosis excesivas de antibióticos comerciales como la estreptomicina; sin embargo, ya se han aislado cepas resistentes. Con el fin de encontrar un control eficaz, se propone la síntesis de materiales híbridos (MI) asociando un hidróxido doble laminar (HDL) y un antibiótico como molécula biológicamente activa (MBA). El objetivo de este trabajo consistió, por un lado, en la evaluación in vitro de la actividad antimicrobiana de los materiales híbridos contra la bacteria fitopatógena Erwinia amylovora y por otro estudiar el efecto de la aplicación de estos mismos materiales en peras (Pyrus communis L.) infectadas con la enfermedad de fuego bacteriano.One cause of post-harvest losses is due to microorganisms.     Deciphering CHFR role in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

    Checkpoint with forkhead-associated and ring finger domains (CHFR) has been proposed as a predictive and prognosis biomarker for different tumor types, but its role in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains unknown. The aim of this study was two-pronged: to review the role of CHFR in PDAC and evaluating CHFR as a potential predictive biomarker in this disease. For this purpose, we first explored the CHFR messenger (m)RNA expression and promoter methylation through the TCGA database. Secondly, the CHFR expression and promoter methylation were prospectively evaluated in a cohort of patients diagnosed with borderline (n = 19) or resectable (n = 16) PDAC by immunohistochemistry (IHC), methylation specific-PCR (MSP), and pyrosequencing. The results from the TCGA database showed significant differences in terms of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) based on the CHFR mRNA expression, which was likely independent from the promoter methylation. Importantly, our results showed that in primarily resected patients and also the entire cohort, a higher CHFR expression as indicated by the higher IHC staining intensity might identify patients with longer disease-free survival (DFS) and OS, respectively. Similarly, in the same cohorts, patients with lower methylation levels by pyrosequencing showed significantly longer OS than patients without this pattern. Both, the CHFR expression intensity and its promoter methylation were established as independent prognostic factors for PFS and OS in the entire cohort. In contrast, no significant differences were found between different methylation patterns for CHFR and the response to taxane-based neoadjuvant treatment. These results suggest the potential role of the higher expression of CHFR and the methylation pattern of its promoter as potential prognostic biomarkers in PDAC, thus warranting further comprehensive studies to extend and confirm our preliminary findings.This work was funded by grants from the Department of Health from the Government of Navarra (Ref. 008-2018), REFBIO II Pyrenees Biomedical Network from Programa INTERREG V-A España-Francia-Andorra (Ref.     Impact of the Reticular Stress and Unfolded Protein Response on the inflammatory response in endometrial stromal cells

    During decidualization, endometrial stromal cells undergo reticular stress (RS) and unfolded protein response (UPR), allowing the endoplasmic reticulum-expansion and immunomodulators production. Physiological RS generates the activation of sensing proteins, inflammasome activation and mature-IL-1β secretion, associated with pro-implantatory effects. We focus on the impact of RS and UPR on decidualized cells and whether they induce a physiological sterile inflammatory response through IL-1β production. Human endometrial stromal cell line (HESC) after decidualization treatment with MPA + dibutyryl-cAMP (Dec) increased the expression of RS-sensors (ATF6, PERK and IRE1α) and UPR markers (sXBP1 and CHOP) in comparison with Non-dec cells. Then we found increased NLRP3 expression in Dec cells compared with Non-dec cells. In fact STF-083010 (an IRE1α inhibitor) prevented this increase. Downstream, increased levels of active caspase-1 on Dec cells were detected by FAM-Flica Caspase-1 associated with an increase in IL-1β production. Moreover, the treatment with STF-083010 decreased the invasion index observed in Dec cells, evaluated by an in vitro model of implantation. In endometrial biopsies from recurrent spontaneous abortion patients an increased expression of IRE1α was found in comparison with fertile women; while recurrent implantation failure samples showed a lower expression of sXBP1, TXNIP and NLRP3 than fertile women, suggesting that RS/UPR tenors might condition endometrial receptivity.Fil: Grasso, Esteban Nicolas.     Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and co-occurrence/co-infection with malaria during the first wave of the pandemic (the Burkina Faso case)

    Africa accounts for 1.5% of the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and 2.7% of deaths, but this low incidence has been partly attributed to the limited testing capacity in most countries. In addition, the population in many African countries is at high risk of infection with endemic infectious diseases such as malaria. Our aim is to determine the prevalence and circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants, and the frequency of co-infection with the malaria parasite. We conducted serological tests and microscopy examinations on 998 volunteers of different ages and sexes in a random and stratified population sample in Burkina-Faso. In addition, nasopharyngeal samples were taken for RT-qPCR of SARS-COV-2 and for whole viral genome sequencing. Our results show a 3.2% and a 2.5% of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and PCR positivity; and 22% of malaria incidence, over the sampling period, with marked differences linked to age. Importantly, we found 2 cases of confirmed co-infection and 8 cases of suspected co-infection mostly in children and teenagers. Finally, we report the genome sequences of 13 SARS-CoV-2 isolates circulating in Burkina Faso at the time of analysis, assigned to lineages: A.19, A.21, B.1.1.404, B.1.1.118, B.1 and grouped into clades; 19B, 20A and 20B. This is the first population-based study about SARS-CoV-2 and malaria in Burkina Faso during the first wave of the pandemic, providing a relevant estimation of the real prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and variants circulating in this Sub-Saharan African country.     Diagnosis delay and follow-up strategies in colorectal cancer. Prognosis implications: a study protocol

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Controversy exists with regard to the impact that the different components of diagnosis delay may have on the degree of invasion and prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. The follow-up strategies after treatment also vary considerably. The aims of this study are: a) to determine if the symptoms-to-diagnosis interval and the treatment delay modify the survival of patients with colorectal cancer, and b) to determine if different follow-up strategies are associated with a higher survival rate.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>Multi-centre study with prospective follow-up in five regions in Spain (Galicia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Aragón and Valencia) during the period 2010-2012. Incident cases are included with anatomopathological confirmation of colorectal cancer (International Classification of Diseases 9th revision codes 153-154) that formed a part of a previous study (n = 953).</p> <p>At the time of diagnosis, each patient was given a structured interview. Their clinical records will be reviewed during the follow-up period in order to obtain information on the explorations and tests carried out after treatment, and the progress of these patients.</p> <p>Symptoms-to-diagnosis interval is defined as the time calculated from the diagnosis of cancer and the first symptoms attributed to cancer. Treatment delay is defined as the time elapsed between diagnosis and treatment. In non-metastatic patients treated with curative intention, information will be obtained during the follow-up period on consultations performed in the digestive, surgery and oncology departments, as well as the endoscopies, tumour markers and imaging procedures carried out.</p> <p>Local recurrence, development of metastases in the follow-up, appearance of a new tumour and mortality will be included as outcome variables.</p> <p>Actuarial survival analysis with Kaplan-Meier curves, Cox regression and competitive risk survival analysis will be performed.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study will make it possible to verify if the different components of delay have an impact on survival rate in colon cancer and rectal cancer. In consequence, this multi-centre study will be able to detect the variability present in the follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer, and if this variability modifies the prognosis. Ideally, this study could determine which follow-up strategies are associated with a better prognosis in colorectal cancer.</p
