Do migrating birds avoid offshore wind turbines? A method to investigate and analyze reactions of diurnally migrating birds to offshore wind farms
When addressing potential threats of offshore wind farms on migrating birds, avoidance behavior in response to wind farms is among those commonly mentioned, meaning that wind farms can act as barriers for migrants. Substantial - but otherwise sparsely - proof for this exits from Denmark and The Netherlands. However, monitoring potential threats in the German Bight failed in providing evidence of an avoidance response of migrating birds to offshore wind farms. Minor adaptations of the current method of investigation and analysis provided here, however, have led to substantiated results. In addition, these adaptations can easily be incorporated into current standard protocols of environmental impact assessment studies. Demonstrating this, we here present an example of avoidance behavior of gannets Sula bassana in particular to a wind farm and of birds in general
Description of a bird strike event and its causes at a research platform in the German Bight, North Sea
The present work derives from currently undertaken ecological accompanying research at the offshore-windfarm âalpha ventusâ, 45 km north of the North Sea island Borkum. Using remote detection techniques and visual observations, we present for the first time since initial data ascertainment in autumn 2003 a complete nightâs course of a bird mass-migration along with different weather parameters and a directly connected mass collision event at the research platform FINO1 in the night of the 1./2.11.2010. Increasing numbers of migrating birds from northeasterly directions were detected during the early evening of the 1.11.2010 and reached their peak of about 460 radar echoes/h between 19:00 and 20:00 h. Contemporaneous weather changes involving tailwinds changing to direct headwinds, increasing wind velocity and decreasing visibility led the birds to continuously descend to lower heights during the strongest migration period between 19:00 and 1:00 h. From 4:00 h onward, more than 50 % of the migrating birds were detected in the lower flight heights of 200 m and below and suggest low-level flights to be a reaction towards sudden bad-weather appearances. Enhanced aggregation of birds in the effected area of FINO1 and operating wind turbines, respectively, increase their potential risk of collision by being drawn to the illuminated structures, and in fact, collisions were detected through video and infrared recordings at FINO1. With 88 birds found dead from the night of the 1./2.11.2010, this event holds fourth position of so far documented mass collision events at FINO1. Because the documentation of such (mass) collision events is generally obfuscated and often methodologically limited, the subsequent assessment of the threat for birds is still unknown. The presented event highlights the daunting quantitative dimensions of casualties with regard to future projected wind turbines
Annual and diurnal phenology of birdcall activity above the German Bight
analysiert. Drei Viertel aller Registrierungen betrafen Passeres
(ĂŒberwiegend Drosseln), ferner wurden vor allem Limikolen,
Seeschwalben und Kleinmöwen nachgewiesen. 79,4 % aller
Individuen wurden in der Nacht registriert. Hohe Individuenzahlen,
With regard to potential sites for the construction of offshore wind farms and to their possible threats for birds it is essential
to enlarge the current knowledge on bird migration above the sea â especially during the night. Within a comprehensive study
for the evaluation of offshore wind farms bird calls were registered automatically on a research platform in the south-eastern
North Sea. The species identification of nocturnally migrating birds is almost exclusively possible only by means of their calls.
Here, we present species-specific bird occurrence near an anthropogenic offshore structure in the total daily and yearly course
on the basis of automatically registered calls.
From 2004 to 2007, a total of 100 species was identified. Calls from 95,318 individuals (excluding the large gulls) were used
for analyses. Three quarters were passerines (predominantly thrushes), furthermore mainly waders, terns and smaller gulls
were detected. 79.4% of all individuals were registered during the night. High numbers of individuals, mostly of several species
occurring together, were concentrated in only a few days/nights or even hours. Bird occurrence was much higher during autumn
migration than during spring migration. A maximum of 5,236 birds of different species (corresponding to 392 Ind./h) was
identified in the night from 28th to 29th October 2005. The migration periods of the short-/medium distance migrants were
clearly distinguishable, otherwise not those of the long-distance passerine migrants, presumably due to their much minor
ambition to call. In July mainly smaller gulls and terns, in August above all terns and waders (especially Redshank) and in
winter some late smaller gulls and thrushes were registered. Generally, numbers increased continually with the beginning of
the night and reached a maximum before sunrise. The fewest birds were detected in the late afternoon.
Despite methodological constraints, the shown species-specific phenologies broadly match the migration times in the offshore
area of the German Bight as recovered by trapping and/or by scheduled or coincidental visual observations of bird migration.
Like these methods the acoustic recording cannot cover the whole occurrence of birds. Presumably, the number of birds is
underestimated during fine and overestimated during adverse weather when birds reduce flight altitude. However, we assume
that the birds registered acoustically on the platform reflect at least the low flying proportion of the calling species in the course
of the year and in their daily variability.
The opportunity to estimate numbers of low and thereby close to an anthropogenic obstruction flying birds using calls is
â with regard to the evaluation of its collision risk and the introduction of mitigation and avoidance measures (site, short-term
shutdown of the construction and optimization of illumination) â not exiguous
Phenology of the "visible bird migration" across the German Bight
Im Rahmen eines vom Bundesministerium fĂŒr Umwelt, Naturschutz
und Reaktorsicherheit geförderten Projekts zu
Auswirkungen von Offshore-Windenergieanlagen auf den
Vogelzug wurden vom Herbst 2003 bis Ende 2006 Vogelzugplanbeobachtungen
in der Deutschen Bucht durchgefĂŒhrt.
Die Sichtbeobachtungen ziehender Vogelarten ĂŒber See
vergleichsweise wenige Individuen ĂŒber Sylt (Herbst) bzw.
demzufolge wenigen von See ankommenden Vögel bedingten
miteinander in Beziehung standen.Within a project supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety dealing
with possible consequences of offshore wind farms on bird migration observations of migrating birds were carried out on three
islands in the German Bight, Sylt, Helgoland and Wangerooge, from autumn 2003 to the end of 2006. With âseawatchingâ the
migration of mostly larger species (waterbirds in the broadest sense) over the sea was recorded and âislandwatchingâ concentrated
on the migration of smaller species (mostly passerines) over land (islands in this case). The particular goal of this study
is the synoptic observation at three locations at least during the migration periods.
Apart from some exceptions, at all three sites seawatching showed the highest migration intensity in the morning hours,
much less migration occurred at midday and in the evening. Varying proportions of species are mainly caused by the different
breeding and staging/wintering areas, whereby the three sites are touched by the birds to a greater or lesser extent. This phenomenon
is most obvious in geese.
With seawatching in the first three hours after sunrise a total of 185 species was recorded (154 near Sylt, 137 near Helgoland
and 148 near Wangerooge). For 23 species, which were abundant or are regarded to be critical concerning effects of offshore
wind turbines, the seasonal and daily patterns of migration intensity are described and shown in graphs, diurnal variation of
migration intensity for 15 species and flock size for 11 species. In many species, migration was more intense near Sylt in autumn
and near Wangerooge in spring, whereas a more balanced relation of the two migration periods was typical for Helgoland.
During both seasons the daily migration intensity of the three sites was highly significantly correlated. That holds true for the
overall picture of all species as well as for the migration intensities of many particular species. Due to the geographical locations
of the breeding and wintering areas of most species, a general direction of migration along a SW-NE-axis can be expected.
However, the results of seawatching could prove this only for Helgoland. Near Sylt and Wangerooge, most birds followed the
coastline, i.e. they migrated along a SâN-axis and WâE-axis, respectively.
With islandwatching in the first three hours after sunrise a total of 189 species was observed (165 above Sylt, 133 above
Helgoland and 161 above Wangerooge). Phenology are described and presented graphically for 23 relatively abundant species,
flock size for 10 species. As with seawatching, migration intensity was lower at Helgoland than at the two coastal islands and
showed roughly the same amount of birds during spring and autumn migration. As a consequence of the preference of most
passerines to migrate along a leading line, migration was stronger for many species in autumn at Sylt and more pronounced
in spring at Wangerooge: While relatively few birds headed towards the sea at Sylt (autumn) and Wangerooge (spring), the
great majority of birds followed the coastline southward (Sylt in autumn) and eastward (Wangerooge in spring), respectively.
Obviously, passerines avoided to fly towards the open sea during daytime and followed the coastline instead. Hence, the few
birds arriving from sea produced low migration intensities at Sylt in spring and at Wangerooge in autumn. The SW-NE-direction
predominating in bird migration in Central Europe was only approved at Helgoland. But even there, jetties of the harbour
acted as leading lines, because in autumn many passerines left the island towards SE and S. Because of the leading line effects
at Wangerooge (spring) and Sylt (autumn) the connection was strongest between the sites representing migration over sea, i.e.
between Helgoland and arrivals above Sylt in spring, but between Helgoland and arrivals above Wangerooge in autumn. This
held true for all species together as well as for the single species
Methods for the automatic recording of bird calls and songs in field ornithology
Der gegenwĂ€rtige Kenntnisstand ĂŒber automatisierte Methoden

in Kernzonen von Schutzgebieten. This review presents our current knowledge on automated methods for acoustic recording of calls and songs of birds. Acoustic
long-term recordings can serve as a basis for an automated bird census. We stress the question of whether sound recordings
are suitable for qualitative and quantitative analysis of bird populations. Special attention is devoted to autonomous recording
methods and the evaluation of long-term recordings by use of acoustic pattern recognition algorithms. Realistic scenarios for
the use of automated methods in field ornithology we see in the investigation of nocturnal bird migration, the census of
nocturnal bird species, and data collection in core areas of nature reserves
Identifying migratory pathways of Nathusius' pipistrelles (Pipistrellus nathusii) using stable hydrogen and strontium isotopes
Rationale
Identifying migratory corridors of animals is essential for their effective protection, yet the exact location of such corridors is often unknown, particularly for elusive animals such as bats. While migrating along the German coastline, Nathusius' pipistrelles (Pipistrellus nathusii) are regularly killed at wind turbines. Therefore, we explored the paths taken on their annual journey.
Methods
We used isotope ratio mass spectrometry to measure stable hydrogen and strontium isotope ratios in fur keratin of 59 Nathusius' pipistrelles captured on three offshore islands. Samples were pre-treated before analysis to report exclusively stable isotope ratios of non-exchangeable hydrogen. We generated maps to predict summer origins of bats using isoscape models.
Results
Bats were classified as long-distance migrants, mostly originating from Eastern Europe. Hydrogen analysis suggested for some bats a possible Fennoscandian origin, yet additional information from strontium analysis excluded this possibility. Instead, our data suggest that most Nathusius' pipistrelles migrating along the German coastline were of continental European summer origin, but also highlight the possibility that Nathusius' pipistrelles of Baltorussian origin may travel offshore from Fennoscandia to Germany.
Conclusions
Our findings demonstrate the benefit of using complementary isotopic tracers for analysing the migratory pathways of bats and also potentially other terrestrial vertebrate species. Furthermore, data from our study suggest an offset of fur strontium isotope ratios in relation to local bedrock
Minimal Higher-Dimensional Extensions of the Standard Model and Electroweak Observables
We consider minimal 5-dimensional extensions of the Standard Model
compactified on an orbifold, in which the SU(2) and U(1)
gauge fields and Higgs bosons may or may not all propagate in the fifth
dimension while the observable matter is always assumed to be confined to a
4-dimensional subspace. We pay particular attention to consistently quantize
the higher-dimensional models in the generalized gauge and derive
analytic expressions for the mass spectrum of the resulting Kaluza-Klein states
and their couplings to matter. Based on recent data from electroweak precision
tests, we improve previous limits obtained in the 5-dimensional Standard Model
with a common compactification radius and extend our analysis to other possible
5-dimensional Standard-Model constructions. We find that the usually derived
lower bound of TeV on an universal compactification scale may be
considerably relaxed to TeV in a minimal scenario, in which the
SU(2) gauge boson is the only field that feels the presence of the fifth
dimension.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figure, typos correcte
Promotion of Physical Activity Using Point-of-Decision Prompts in Berlin Underground Stations
To evaluate point-of-decision prompts in the promotion of stair use in Germany, motivational posters were placed at three underground stations in Berlin. The proportion of passengers using stairs or stairways was counted before, during installation, and two weeks after removal of posters. In total, 5,467 passersby were counted. Stair use increased significantly in women, but not in men. The present pilot study thereby shows that the use of point-of-decision prompts is also feasible in Germany and it provides some evidence of effectiveness. Methodologically rigorous studies are warranted to confirm these findings
Decoherence of entangled kaons and its connection to entanglement measures
We study the time evolution of the entangled kaon system by considering the
Liouville - von Neumann equation with an additional term which allows for
decoherence. We choose as generators of decoherence the projectors to the
2-particle eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. Then we compare this model with the
data of the CPLEAR experiment and find in this way an upper bound on the
strength of the decoherence. We also relate to an effective
decoherence parameter considered previously in literature. Finally we
discuss our model in the light of different measures of entanglement, i.e. the
von Neumann entropy , the entanglement of formation and the concurrence
, and we relate the decoherence parameter to the loss of
entanglement: .Comment: comments and references added, 18 pages, 1 figur
Fracture characteristics of PEEK at various stress triaxialities
Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is an alternative to metal alloys in orthopaedic applications. It gives significant advantages including excellent mechanical properties and non-toxicity. In this work, a set of specimens with different notched radii were selected to examine the effect of triaxial state of stress on the fracture behavior of PEEK. Fractographic analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) further elucidated the fracture micromechanisms. Distinct fracture patterns were identified under different stress triaxialities. In addition, the microstructural inclusion properties in PEEK specimen such as inclusion size and chemical composition were analysed and determined. Finite element simulations were carried out to evaluate the correlation of observed fracture characteristics with different stress triaxialities
