    Learning beyond borders : pioneering interdisciplinary learning and teaching approaches to promote socially responsible design practices

In this session, staff and students share their experiences of participating in a pioneering interdisciplinary approach to social design at Sheffield Hallam University. Key learning will be highlighted including: how can learning and teaching practices be socially situated, what makes a holistic learning and teaching experience and what happens when learning and teaching moves beyond the classroom to bring transformation to real world issues

    What's the point of knowing how?

    Why is it useful to talk and think about knowledge-how? Using Edward Craigā€™s discussion of the function of the concepts of knowledge and knowledge-how as a jumping off point, this paper argues that considering this question can offer us new angles on the debate about knowledge-how. We consider two candidate functions for the concept of knowledge-how: pooling capacities, and mutual reliance. Craig makes the case for pooling capacities, which connects knowledge-how to our need to pool practical capacities. I argue that the evidence is much more equivocal. My suggested diagnosis is that the concept of knowledge-how plays both functions, meaning that the concept of knowledge-how is inconsistent, and that the debate about knowledge-how is at least partly a metalinguistic negotiation. In closing, I suggest a way to revise the philosophical concept of knowledge how

    With the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, confusion and panic rippled not only through the United States, but across the world as well. The U.S. Army bases and airfields around Manila in the Philippines readied for the imminent attack from the Japanese. U.S. troops fought against the Japanese in the Philippines, but in late December of 1941, Manila was declared an open city. The document ā€œAboard Ship on Way to Statesā€ was written by American citizen Carr Hooper, who, accompanied with his wife Ruth, became a prisoner at Japanese internment camp Santo Tomas in the Philippines from 1942 to 1945. Throughout the pages of ā€œAboard Ship on Way to States,ā€ Hooper very accurately recalls specific dates, names, and events from the war. The document was typed on a typewriter and there are several handwritten additions, corrected spellings, and omissions. Due to the age of the document, the pages are yellowed

    The Magnetorotational Instability in Core Collapse Supernova Explosions

    We investigate the action of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in the context of iron-core collapse. Exponential growth of the field on the rotation time scale by the MRI will dominate the linear growth process of field line "wrapping" with the same characteristic time. We examine a variety of initial rotation states, with solid body rotation or a gradient in rotational velocity, that correspond to models in the literature. A relatively modest value of the initial rotation, a period of ~ 10 s, will give a very rapidly rotating PNS and hence strong differential rotation with respect to the infalling matter. We assume conservation of angular momentum on spherical shells. Results are discussed for two examples of saturation fields, a fiducial field that corresponds to Alfven velocity = rotational velocity and a field that corresponds to the maximum growing mode of the MRI. Modest initial rotation velocities of the iron core result in sub-Keplerian rotation and a sub-equipartition magnetic field that nevertheless produce substantial MHD luminosity and hoop stresses: saturation fields of order 10^{15} - 10^{16} G develop within 300 msec after bounce with an associated MHD luminosity of about 10^{52} erg/s.     Driving in stroke survivors aged 18ā€“65 years: The Psychosocial Outcomes In StrokE (POISE) Cohort Study

    Background: There is limited information regarding return to driving after stroke. Aims: To determine the frequency and predictors of return to driving within 1 month of acute stroke in younger (age 18ā€“65 years) adults. Methods: POISE (Psychosocial Outcomes In StrokE) was a cohort study conducted in Australia between October 2008 and June 2010. Consecutive patients (age 18ā€“65 years) with a recent (ā‰¤28 days) acute stroke were recruited. Validated demographic, clinical, mental health, cognitive, and disability measures including return to driving were obtained. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with return to driving within 1 month of stroke. Results: Among 359 participants who were legally able to drive before stroke, 96 (26.7%) returned to driving within 1 month. Compared to those without an early return to driving (n = 263), drivers were more often male, the main income earner, in paid work before stroke and without symptoms of depression or fatigue. Independence in activities of daily living (odds ratio (OR) 30.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.85ā€“234.45), not recalling receiving advice on driving cessation (OR 5.55, 95% CI 2.86ā€“11.11), and having returned to paid work (OR 3.93, 95% CI 1.94ā€“7.96) were associated with early return to driving. Conclusions: One in four young adults resumed driving within a month, contrary to guideline recommendations. These data reinforce the importance of deciding who is responsible for determining fitness to drive after stroke, when, and whether it is reasonable to enforce driving restrictions on those with minimal disability who are fit to return to work.     Identifying critically important vascular access outcomes for trials in haemodialysis : an international survey with patients, caregivers and health professionals

    BACKGROUND: Vascular access outcomes reported across haemodialysis (HD) trials are numerous, heterogeneous and not always relevant to patients and clinicians. This study aimed to identify critically important vascular access outcomes. METHOD: Outcomes derived from a systematic review, multi-disciplinary expert panel and patient input were included in a multilanguage online survey. Participants rated the absolute importance of outcomes using a 9-point Likert scale (7-9 being critically important). The relative importance was determined by a best-worst scale using multinomial logistic regression. Open text responses were analysed thematically. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 873 participants [224 (26%) patients/caregivers and 649 (74%) health professionals] from 58 countries. Vascular access function was considered the most important outcome (mean score 7.8 for patients and caregivers/8.5 for health professionals, with 85%/95% rating it critically important, and top ranked on best-worst scale), followed by infection (mean 7.4/8.2, 79%/92% rating it critically important, second rank on best-worst scale). Health professionals rated all outcomes of equal or higher importance than patients/caregivers, except for aneurysms. We identified six themes: necessity for HD, applicability across vascular access types, frequency and severity of debilitation, minimizing the risk of hospitalization and death, optimizing technical competence and adherence to best practice and direct impact on appearance and lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: Vascular access function was the most critically important outcome among patients/caregivers and health professionals. Consistent reporting of this outcome across trials in HD will strengthen their value in supporting vascular access practice and shared decision making in patients requiring HD

    A Strategy for Finding Near Earth Objects with the SDSS Telescope

    We present a detailed observational strategy for finding Near Earth Objects (NEOs) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) telescope. We investigate strategies in normal, unbinned mode as well as binning the CCDs 2x2 or 3x3, which affects the sky coverage rate and the limiting apparent magnitude. We present results from 1 month, 3 year and 10 year simulations of such surveys. For each cadence and binning mode, we evaluate the possibility of achieving the Spaceguard goal of detecting 90% of 1 km NEOs (absolute magnitude H <= 18 for an albedo of 0.1). We find that an unbinned survey is most effective at detecting H <= 20 NEOs in our sample. However, a 3x3 binned survey reaches the Spaceguard Goal after only seven years of operation. As the proposed large survey telescopes (PanStarss; LSST) are at least 5-10 years from operation, an SDSS NEO survey could make a significant contribution to the detection and photometric characterization of the NEO population.Comment: Accepted by AJ -- 12 pages, 11 figure

    A comparison of substrate oxidation during prolonged exercise in men at terrestrial altitude and normobaric normoxia following the coingestion of 13C glucose and 13C fructose

    This study compared the effects of co-ingesting glucose and fructose on exogenous and endogenous substrate oxidation during prolonged exercise at altitude and sea level, in men. Seven male British military personnel completed two bouts of cycling at the same relative workload (55% Wmax) for 120 minutes on acute exposure to altitude (3375m) and at sea level (~113m). In each trial, participants ingested 1.2 g.min-1 of glucose (enriched with 13C glucose) and 0.6 g.min-1 of fructose (enriched with 13C fructose) directly before and every 15 minutes during exercise. Indirect calorimetry and isotope ratio mass spectrometry were used to calculate fat oxidation, total and exogenous carbohydrate oxidation, plasma glucose oxidation and endogenous glucose oxidation derived from liver and muscle glycogen. Total carbohydrate oxidation during the exercise period was lower at altitude (157.7Ā±56.3 grams) than sea level (286.5Ā±56.2 grams, P=0.006, ES=2.28), whereas fat oxidation was higher at altitude (75.5Ā±26.8 grams) than sea level (42.5Ā±21.3 grams, P=0.024, ES=1.23). Peak exogenous carbohydrate oxidation was lower at altitude (1.13Ā±0.2 g.min-1) than sea level (1.42Ā±0.16 g.min-1, P=0.034, ES=1.33). There were no differences in rates, or absolute and relative contributions of plasma or liver glucose oxidation between conditions during the second hour of exercise. However, absolute and relative contributions of muscle glycogen during the second hour were lower at altitude (29.3Ā±28.9 grams, 16.6Ā±15.2%) than sea level (78.7Ā±5.2 grams (P=0.008, ES=1.71), 37.7Ā±13.0% (P=0.016, ES=1.45).     Repressor CopG prevents access of RNA polymerase to promoter and actively dissociates open complexes

    Replication of the promiscuous plasmid pMV158 requires expression of the initiator repB gene, which is controlled by the repressor CopG. Genes repB and copG are co-transcribed from promoter Pcr. We have studied the interactions between RNA polymerase, CopG and the promoter to elucidate the mechanism of repression by CopG. Complexes formed at 0Ā°C and at 37Ā°C between RNA polymerase and Pcr differed from each other in stability and in the extent of the DNA contacted. The 37Ā°C complex was very stable (half-life of about 3 h), and shared features with typical open complexes generated at a variety of promoters. CopG protein repressed transcription from Pcr at two different stages in the process leading to the initiation complex. First, CopG hindered binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter. Second, CopG was able to displace RNA polymerase once the enzyme has formed a stable complex with Pcr.
