UK regional scale modelling of natural geohazards and climate change
For over 10 years, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has been investigating geotechnical and
mineralogical factors controlling volume change behaviour of UK clay soils and mudrocks. A
strong understanding of the relationship between these parameters and the clays' shrink-swell
properties has been developed. More recently, partly resulting from concerns of users of this
knowledge, a study of the relationships between climate change and shrink-swell behaviour
over the last 30 years has been carried out. Information on subsidence insurance claims has been
provided by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the UK Meteorological Office (UKMO)
historical climate station data has also been utilised. This is being combined with the
BGS's GeoSure national geohazard data, to build a preliminary GIS model to provide an understanding
of the susceptibility of the Tertiary London Clay to climate change. This paper summarises
the data analysis and identifies future work for model construction and refinement
New Fundamental dHvA Frequency in Canonical Low-Dimensional Fermi Liquids
We show that a new fundamental period of dHvA oscillations, which
appears along with other ``forbidden'' combination frequencies in a multi-band
canonical Fermi-liquid, is very robust with respect to a finite smearing of
Landau levels and a background of non-quantized states. We analyse the
possibility of measuring small Fermi surface pockets with the use of the
``forbidden'' frequencies.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX 3.0, with 2 PS Figure
Steklov problem on differential forms
In this paper we study spectral properties of Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on
differential forms obtained by a slight modification of the definition due to
Belishev and Sharafutdinov. The resulting operator is shown to be
self-adjoint on the subspace of coclosed forms and to have purely discrete
spectrum there. We investigate properies of eigenvalues of and prove a
Hersch-Payne-Schiffer type inequality relating products of those eigenvalues to
eigenvalues of Hodge Laplacian on the boundary. Moreover, non-trivial
eigenvalues of are always at least as large as eigenvalues of
Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined by Raulot and Savo. Finally, we remark that a
particular case of -forms on the boundary of -dimensional manifold
shares a lot of important properties with the classical Steklov eigenvalue
problem on surfaces.Comment: 18 page

Increasing road network resilience to the impacts of ground movement due to climate change – a case study from Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
The UK road network is deteriorating due to ageing infrastructure, climate change and increasing traffic. Due to community and economic reliance on a functioning road system, there is an urgent requirement to build resilience. The roads of south Lincolnshire have high susceptibility to ground movement due to the underlying geology. Deposits such as peat, tidal flat deposits, and alluvium have a high susceptibility to compress, particularly when loaded, or through loss of water content driven by climate change or lowering of water in drainage channels. The shallow foundations of Lincolnshire's rural evolved roads, originating from old mud tracks, are poorly constructed, increasing their vulnerability to movement. Types of damage include longitudinal cracking, edge failure, and uneven long section profiles. Through knowledge exchange, data sharing and collaboration between the British Geological Survey and Lincolnshire County Council, a direct relationship between road condition and geohazard susceptibility has been demonstrated; showing compressible ground has a greater correlation with road damage than originally considered. This suggests improved understanding of the relationships between the geological, climatic, and anthropogenic driving forces on ground movement and road damage enables more informed repair prioritisation, decision support, and improved bespoke road repair practices, increasing future resilience of road networks
Quantization on Curves
Deformation quantization on varieties with singularities offers perspectives
that are not found on manifolds. Essential deformations are classified by the
Harrison component of Hochschild cohomology, that vanishes on smooth manifolds
and reflects information about singularities. The Harrison 2-cochains are
symmetric and are interpreted in terms of abelian -products. This paper
begins a study of abelian quantization on plane curves over \Crm, being
algebraic varieties of the form R2/I where I is a polynomial in two variables;
that is, abelian deformations of the coordinate algebra C[x,y]/(I).
To understand the connection between the singularities of a variety and
cohomology we determine the algebraic Hochschild (co-)homology and its
Barr-Gerstenhaber-Schack decomposition. Homology is the same for all plane
curves C[x,y]/(I), but the cohomology depends on the local algebra of the
singularity of I at the origin.Comment: 21 pages, LaTex format. To appear in Letters Mathematical Physic
A composite measure of cognitive and functional progression in Alzheimer's disease: Design of the Capturing Changes in Cognition study
markdownabstract__Introduction__ Cognitive testing in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential for establishing diagnosis, monitoring progression, and evaluating treatments. Assessments should ideally be brief, reliable, valid, and reflect clinically meaningful changes. There is a lack of instruments that meet all these criteria. In the Capturing Changes in Cognition (Catch-Cog) study, we seek to correct these deficiencies through the development and validation of a composite measure combining cognition and function: the cognitive-functional composite (CFC). We expect that the CFC is able to detect clinically relevant changes over time in early dementia stages of AD.
__Methods/Design__ We will include patients (n = 350) with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to AD from memory clinics in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. We will include cognitively healthy volunteers (n = 30) as a control group. The CFC is based on the “cognitive composite” and the Amsterdam instrumental activities of daily living questionnaire. We will investigate test–retest reliability with baseline and 2- to 3-week follow-up assessments (n = 50 patients and n = 30 healthy controls). We will involve experts and participants to evaluate the initial feasibility and refine the CFC if needed. Subsequently, we will perform a longitudinal construct validation study in a prospective cohort (n = 300) with baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up assessments. The main outcome is cognitive and functional progression measured by the CFC. Reference measures for progression include traditional cognitive and functional tests, disease burden measures, and brain imaging methods. Using linear mixed modeling, we will investigate longitudinal changes on the CFC and relate these to the reference measures. Using linear regression analyses, we will evaluate the influence of possible confounders such as age, gender, and education on the CFC.
__Discussion__ By performing an independent longitudinal construct validation, the Catch-Cog study of the novel CFC will contribute to the improvement of disease monitoring and treatment evaluation in early dementia stages of AD

The KMOS Deep Survey (KDS) – I. Dynamical measurements of typical star-forming galaxies at z ≃ 3.5
We present dynamical measurements from the KMOS (K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph) Deep Survey (KDS), which is comprised of 77 typical star-forming galaxies at z z ≃ 3.5 in the mass range 9.0 1), with the sample average VC/σint value much smaller than at lower redshift. After carefully selecting comparable star-forming samples at multiple epochs, we find that the rotation-dominated fraction evolves with redshift with a z−0.2 dependence. The rotation-dominated KDS galaxies show no clear offset from the local rotation velocity-stellar mass (i.e. VC − M⋆) relation, although a smaller fraction of the galaxies are on the relation due to the increase in the dispersion-dominated fraction. These observations are consistent with a simple equilibrium model picture, in which random motions are boosted in high-redshift galaxies by a combination of the increasing gas fractions, accretion efficiency, specific star-formation rate and stellar feedback and which may provide significant pressure support against gravity on the galactic disk scale
